The Great Southern Football League is an Australian rules football league based in the state of Western Australia, incorporating teams from towns located within the Great Southern region. The league was formed in 1991 after an amalgamation of the Southern Districts (Denmark, Royals, North Mt Barker, North Albany, Railways, South Mt Barker) and Central Great Southern Football League (Australs, Kojonup, Tambellup, Wanderers, Dumbleyung) Leagues in 1991. [2] All but Denmark and Dumbleyung formed teams in the initial season of the league. [3] There are currently 6 teams covering all tiers of the league.

The North Albany Football and Sporting Club, more often referred to as North Albany, is an Australian rules football club located in Albany, Western Australia. Nicknamed the Kangas, the club play in the Great Southern Football League, with home games being hosted at Collingwood Park. Since being formed in 1897, netball and association football teams have played under banners of North Albany or Kangas.

The Mortlock Football League is an Australian rules football competition based around 8 clubs in the south-west region of Western Australia. The Mount Barker Football Club is an Australian rules football club located in Mount Barker, Western Australia. Nicknamed the Bulls, the club plays in the Great Southern Football League, with home games originally being hosted at Frost Oval in Mount Barker but changed to Sounness Park in 2015.

The Central Great Southern Football League (CGSFL) was based in and around the Shire of Katanning. The CGSFL was formed in 1960 following a merger between the Katanning Football Association and Tambellup Football Association. The CGSFL ran from 1960 to 1990 before it merged with the Southern Districts Football League (SDFL) to form the Great Southern Football League (GSFL).

Declan Mountford is a professional Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club and the West Coast Eagles Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and is currently playing for Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Mountford was born in the small town of Manypeaks in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Mark Douglas Anton Watson is a retired Australian rules football player and coach. He played for Claremont and Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), winning the 1987 Sandover Medal as the league's best player. He also coached South Fremantle for two seasons.
