Greg Sprink (born June 29, 1985) is an American former basketball player known for his collegiate career at the United States Naval Academy (Navy) between 2004 and 2008, where he was the 2008 Patriot League Player of the Year as well as an honorable mention All-American. He never played professionally, serving required duty instead in the U.S. Navy. As of 2017 he works for a construction material wholesaler in the Houston, Texas area.

High school

Sprink, a native of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, California, [1] was an El Camino High School role player who garnered little attention from colleges. [2] He primarily shot three-pointers and deferred to three teammates who were all committed to playing at NCAA Division I schools. [2] As a senior, he led El Camino to the 2003 CIF San Diego championship with a 31–3 record. He also garnered honorable mention all-state honors as a junior and second-team all-state recognition as a senior. [3]

Navy, however, sent Sprink multiple recruitment letters, which caught his attention. [2] He appreciated the advantages of a Naval Academy education and secure job opportunities after his five-year military service commitment so he committed to play for the Midshipmen under new head coach Billy Lange. [2] Spring spent a postgraduate year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School prior to enrolling at the university. [2]

College

Sprink entered his freshman year in 2004–05. He made an impact, averaging 10.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, good for third-best on Navy in both statistical categories. [3] He, along with freshman teammate Corey Johnson, were named to the 2005 Patriot League All-Rookie Team. [3] The following season in 2005–06, Sprinks led the Midshipmen in points (14.9 ppg), rebounding (4.9 rpg), three-pointers made (61), free throws made (95), and free throw percentage (85.6%). [3] Navy only mustered a 10–18 overall record however. [4]

As a junior, the Midshipmen showed improvement by putting together a 14–16 record. [5] Sprink scored his 1,000th career point on February 2, 2007 against Bucknell and finished the season averaging 16.9 points per game, which led Navy. [3] He also was second in rebounding average (4.8) and third in total assists (73). [3] He was named to the All-Patriot League second team. [3]

Sprinks' senior season in 2007–08 saw both him and the team continuing to improve. Navy went 16–14, finishing in second place in the regular season standings after being predicted to finish seventh during the preseason, while Sprinks scored 21.1 points per game (Navy's first 20 ppg scorer since 1991) and was named the Patriot League Player of the Year. [3] [6] He became the first Navy player to win the Patriot League award. [3] He was also honored on the all-conference first team, as well as being an honorable mention NCAA All-American by the Associated Press. [1] Sprink finished his career with 1,785 points, 592 rebounds, and 254 assists. [7]

Post college

Sprink graduated from the Naval Academy in 2008. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy until 2017, although he is still in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In 2017 he co-founded Admiral Distribution, a construction material wholesaler in the Houston, Texas area, where he serves as in a business development capacity.

The Navy Midshipmen football team represents the United States Naval Academy in NCAA Division I FBS college football. The Naval Academy completed its final season as an FBS independent school in 2014, and became a single-sport member of the American Athletic Conference beginning in the 2015 season. The team is currently coached by Brian Newberry, who was promoted in 2022, following his stint as the Midshipmen defensive coordinator. That season, he led NCAA Division I baseball in strikeouts, and in strikeouts-per-nine-innings. His fastball has been measured at 99 miles per hour (159 km/h). Song did not play professional baseball during the 2020–2022 seasons due to serving as an officer in the Navy.

The Army–Navy lacrosse rivalry is an intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between the Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen. The two programs, historical rivals in other sports like football and soccer, have a fierce and nationally-relevant rivalry in lacrosse as well. With 25 national championships, 10 Final Fours in the NCAA era, and 190 consensus first team All-Americans, the two teams have been integral to the game's history. The rivalry carries a different spirit than many others in collegiate lacrosse, described by former Navy goalie Ryan Kern as: "t’s the same camaraderie that you had in the fall with the football game and it kind of comes out again in the spring with the lacrosse game,” Navy junior goalie Ryan Kern said. “No doubt, all the other sports are important, but just the sheer number of people that come to this game is crazy — just like the football game. You see 16,000 people come to a regular season lacrosse game, and that’s not happening at other lacrosse programs." After 103 meetings, Navy leads the series 63–37–3 through 2023.

Hassan Mustafa Booker is an American former college basketball player and coach best known for his playing career at the United States Naval Academy (Navy) from 1994 to 1998. He was a key performer during a four-year stretch that saw the Midshipmen win three Patriot League regular season titles, two Patriot League tournament titles, and make back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998. Booker was a two-time first-team All-Patriot League selection in his junior and senior seasons. As a junior, he was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP after averaging 17.5 points and 11 rebounds in wins over Lafayette and Bucknell. At the conclusion of the 1997–98 season, Booker was named the winner of the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award, a national award given by the NCAA to a Division I player who demonstrated outstanding character, leadership, integrity, humility, sportsmanship, and talent.
