Gregory J. "Greg" Zanetti is an American retired officer of the United States Army National Guard, financial advisor, and political candidate. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Zanetti was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated from Valley High School in 1976. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Business Administration from Boston University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. [4]

Career

Zanetti served as deputy commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo. [5] On August 13, 2008 Zanetti testified at a pre-trial hearing prior to Guantanamo captive Mohamed Jawad's Guantanamo military commission. [6] Zanetti's Guantanamo tenure ended in January 2009. [7]

On June 14, 2021, he announced his candidacy in the 2022 New Mexico gubernatorial election as a Republican. [3]

Personal life

Zanetti is married to Teresa Zanetti, a former state Representative; [8] they have two sons. [9]

Camp X-Ray Temporary detention facility at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp

Camp X-Ray was a temporary detention facility at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp of Joint Task Force Guantanamo on the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. The first twenty detainees arrived at Guantanamo on 11 January 2002. It was named Camp X-Ray because various temporary camps in the station were named sequentially from the beginning and then from the end of the NATO phonetic alphabet. Joint Task Force Guantanamo Military unit

Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) is a U.S. military joint task force based at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Guantánamo Bay, Cuba on the southeastern end of the base. JTF-GTMO falls under US Southern Command. Since January 2002 the command has operated the Guantanamo Bay detention camps Camp X-Ray and its successors Camp Delta, Camp V, and Camp Echo, where detained prisoners are held who have been captured in the war in Afghanistan and elsewhere since the September 11, 2001 attacks. From the command's founding in 2002 to early 2017, the detainee population has been reduced from 779 to 41. As of June 2021, the unit is under the command of U.S. Army Brigadier General Lance A. Okamura.

Fouzi Khalid Abdullah Al Odah

Fouzi Khalid Abdullah al Odah is a Kuwaiti citizen formerly held in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. He had been detained without charge in Guantanamo Bay since 2002. He was a plaintiff in the ongoing case, Al Odah v. United States, which challenged his detention, along with that of fellow detainees. The case was widely acknowledged to be one of the most significant to be heard by the Supreme Court in the current term. The US Department of Defense reports that he was born in 1977, in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Mohamad Farik Amin

Mohd Farik Bin Amin, alias Zubair Zaid, is a Malaysian who is alleged to be a senior member of Jemaah Islamiyah and al Qaeda. He is currently in American custody in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. He is one of the 14 detainees who had previously been held for years at CIA black sites. He is currently awaiting trial in a military commission. In the ODNI biographies of those 14, Amin is described as a direct subordinate of Hambali. Farik Amin is also a cousin of well-known Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Abdhir.

Mahmoud Abd Al Aziz Abd Al Mujahid Yemeni citizen (born 1977)

Mahmoud Abd Al Aziz Abd Al Mujahid is a Yemeni citizen who was held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba, for over fourteen and a half years, from January 11, 2002, to August 15, 2016. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number is 31. Joint Task Force Guantanamo analysts report that he was born on August 1, 1977, in Taiz, Yemen.

Yasin Qasem Muhammad Ismail

Yasin Qasem Muhammad Ismail is a Yemeni held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number is 522. Joint Task Force Guantanamo counter-terrorism analysts estimate he was born in 1979, in Ibb, Yemen.

Tariq Mahmud Ahmad Muhammad al Sawah is a citizen of Egypt who was held in the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba, from May 2002 to January 2016.

Mohammad Nabi Omari

Mawlawi Mohammad Nabi Omari is a citizen of Afghanistan who was held for nearly twelve years in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number was 832. American intelligence analysts estimate that he was born in 1968, in Khowst, Afghanistan. He arrived at the Guantanamo detention camps on October 28, 2002.

Zahar Omar Hamis Bin Hamdoun Yemeni citizen detained in Guantanamo Bay detention camp

Zahar Omar Hamis Bin Hamdoun is a citizen of Yemen, held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number is 576. The Department of Defense reports that he was born on November 13, 1979, in Ash-Shihr, Yemen.

Abdulmalik Mohammed

Mohammed Abdul Malik Bajabu is a citizen of Kenya currently held in extrajudicial detention in the United States' Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba. He was born in Busia, Uganda in 1973, but has Kenyan citizenship. Abdul Malik was captured in February 2007, on suspicion of leading a terrorist bomb-plot in Mombasa. He was transferred to Guantanamo on 26 March 2007. Abdul Malik is a confirmed member of the East Africa al-Qaeda network as well as a confirmed member of the Council of Islamic Courts and the Islamic Part of Kenya. He "actively participated" in the facilitation of weapons and the planning of terrorist acts against the U.S., according to the Joint Task Force (JTF) at Guantanamo Bay. He was recommended for continued detention under the Department of Defense's control. The JTF gave Abdul Malik a high risk threat against the United States' interests and allies. He has no reports of disciplinary infractions as of May 22, 2007, granting him a low detention risk value. Abdul Malik does, however, have a high intelligence value.

Abdul Rahman Shalabi is a citizen of Saudi Arabia held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internee Security Number is 42.

Abdul Latif Nasir

Abdul Latif Nasir is a citizen of Morocco formerly held in administrative detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number was 244. Joint Task Force Guantanamo counter-terrorism analysts report he was born on March 4, 1965 in Casablanca, Morocco. Abdul Latif Nasir and Sufyian Barhoumi tried to file emergency requests to be transferred from Guantanamo in the final days of Barack Obama's presidency.

Bruce Vargo

Colonel Bruce Vargo is a Military Police officer in the United States Army. He was appointed the commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo's Joint Detention Group—its guard force from 2008 to 2009.
