Guernsey Power Station is a gas-fired power plant located in Guernsey County, Ohio south of Byesville in the heart of the Utica and Marcellus shale region. It generates 1.875 GW of power, the 69th largest power station in the United States. The plant cost $1.7 billion to build.
The electric generating facility will sell energy and capacity into the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) market. PJM is the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states, including Ohio.
The facility uses three of General Electric’s advanced gas turbines, each with a heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine generator and will produce electricity equivalent to the power needs of approximately 1.4 million homes within the PJM region.
Regulatory filings were originally submitted in 2016 to take advantage of decreasing natural gas costs, but construction was delayed until 3rd quarter 2019. [1] [2] The power plant sits atop a former coal mine, and was selected in part due to its proximity to the Rockies Express East natural gas pipeline running from Ohio to Missouri. [3] [4]
Construction is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs. Taxes paid during construction will also pay for new buildings at Meadowbrook High School. [5] In June 2020, local union construction workers protested the use of out-of-state non-union workers on the project instead of the completely local workforce promised. A company spokesperson denied the allegations. [6]
After construction is complete, the plant is expected to provide about 30 full-time jobs, according to a local newspaper's interview with a Caithness Energy official. [7]
While the first unit was scheduled to go online in September 2022, initial start up activity was still underway as of December 2022. [8] [9]
GPS will receive its natural gas from the Utica and Marcellus shale formations in eastern Ohio. [3]
Power will be generated by three advanced combined-cycle GE 7HA.02 gas turbines. [10] Water for operation will be provided by Byesville which will then process the wastewater. [3]
Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) is a concentrated solar power plant in California, United States. With the combined capacity from three separate locations at 354 megawatt (MW), it was for thirty years the world's largest solar thermal energy generating facility, until the commissioning of the even larger Ivanpah facility in 2014. It was also for thirty years the world's largest solar generating facility of any type of technology, until the commissioning of the photovoltaic Topaz Solar Farm in 2014. It consisted of nine solar power plants in California's Mojave Desert, where insolation is among the best available in the United States.
The William H. Zimmer Power Station, located near Moscow, Ohio, was a 1.35-gigawatt coal power plant. Planned by Cincinnati Gas and Electric (CG&E), with Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric and Dayton Power & Light (DP&L) as its partners, it was originally intended to be a nuclear power plant. Although once estimated to be 97% complete, poor construction and quality assurance (QA) led to the plant being converted to coal-fired generation. The plant began operations in 1991. Vistra Corp. acquired ownership in 2018 and operated the plant until its closure on May 31, 2022.
A gas-fired power plant, sometimes referred to as gas-fired power station, natural gas power plant, or methane gas power plant, is a thermal power station that burns natural gas to generate electricity. Gas-fired power plants generate almost a quarter of world electricity and are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, they can provide seasonal, dispatchable energy generation to compensate for variable renewable energy deficits, where hydropower or interconnectors are not available. In the early 2020s batteries became competitive with gas peaker plants.
The Dickerson Generating Station is an 853 MW electric generating plant owned by NRG Energy, located approximately two miles west of Dickerson, Maryland, on the eastern banks of the Potomac River.
Edgewater Generating Station is a 380 megawatt (MW) coal power plant located on the south side of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on the shore of Lake Michigan, whose waters are used to provide cooling. It provides electricity for customers in the northeastern part of Alliant Energy's Wisconsin Power & Light service area and service to several local municipal utilities. In 2009, it was the seventh largest generating station in Wisconsin, with a net summer capacity of 767 MW.
Shale gas in the United States is an available source of unconventional natural gas. Led by new applications of hydraulic fracturing technology and horizontal drilling, development of new sources of shale gas has offset declines in production from conventional gas reservoirs, and has led to major increases in reserves of U.S. natural gas. Largely due to shale gas discoveries, estimated reserves of natural gas in the United States in 2008 were 35% higher than in 2006.
The Utica Shale is a stratigraphical unit of Upper Ordovician age in the Appalachian Basin. It underlies much of the northeastern United States and adjacent parts of Canada.
The energy sector of Ohio consists of thousands of companies and cities representing the oil, natural gas, coal, solar, wind energy, fuel cell, biofuel, geothermal, hydroelectric, and other related industries. Oil and natural gas accounts for $3.1 billion annually in sales while ethanol generates $750 million. Toledo is a national hub in solar cell manufacturing, and the state has significant production of fuel cells. In 2008, the state led the country in alternative energy manufacturing according to Site Selection Magazine, while the natural gas industry has experienced growth due to the expansion of shale gas.
Caithness Energy, LLC is an independent power producer in the United States. Some of its planned, current, and former facilities include:
Bethpage Energy Center is a power station in Bethpage, New York, United States, consisting of two combined cycle plants opened in 1989 and 2005, and one gas turbine peaking plant opened in 2002. The original plant was commissioned by Grumman Aerospace for its Bethpage complex because it was deemed more cost-effective than purchasing power from electric utilities. It was acquired by Calpine in 1998, which expanded the facility with two more plants.
