Guns and Robots is a cartoon-style online shooter developed by Masthead Studios for Microsoft Windows. The focus on the game is construction of gunfighters [1] and team-based gameplay.
The gameplay of GAR is divided between two main activities – robot construction and arena combat.
The player begins by assembling a robot from stand-alone parts and composite modules in the Garage. Several parts are readily available while more powerful components must be unlocked by paying Credits – an in-game currency, earned by destroying opponents and completing objectives in combat. [2] Players can also purchase Credits, but all of the parts can be obtained through regular gameplay. Each robot is composed of several main modules – Chassis, Body, Weapons, and Head, each with their specific function and stats. Only the Body's destruction eliminates the player completely from the game, while the other modules can be destroyed and still allow the player to continue fighting, albeit at a disadvantage. A destroyed Chassis will immobilize the player, and a destroyed Head will reverse his directional input. During the Open Beta, a fifth module type, Devices, was added. [3] These range from mines to shield walls to turrets, and add a deeper strategic edge to the gameplay.
When a player is satisfied with the assembled robot, he can start battle. The arena and the members of each team are randomly selected. As of August 2013, three arenas are available: "High Noon" (inspired by Wild West frontier towns), "Suburbia" [4] and "Abordage", [5] featuring a pirates' theme.
Combat occurs in a classical third-person shooter fashion (although players can also zoom into first-person view), playable in timed 5-minute rounds, without respawn. GAR features three game modes, playable on each map and randomly assigned when a game round begins. In addition to the standard Team Deathmatch, Capture the Batteries offers a similar experience to the classic "capture the flag" modes, but the player has to obtain two of the opposing team's batteries; the second enemy battery only spawns when the first one is delivered to the stealing player's home base. Bomb Squad [6] features a bomb that must be planted at the enemy base, and then protected until it detonates. Both "Capture the Batteries" and "Bomb Squad" [7] award bonus XP and Credits if the round is won by completing its objective (as opposed to destroying the enemy team), which encourages team coordination and a more tactical approach, rather than a head-on assault.
According to the developers' interview, the concept of the game came into their minds after an internal contest by the end of 2011. [8] The game was officially announced in July 2012 [9] initially with one map, "High Noon", a western-themed arena. Masthead Studios utilizes the Unity game engine to craft the graphics and atmosphere in the game. [10] The game is offered in a free to play format. The first phase of the game release was an invitation-only closed beta in October of the same year and the invitations were sent to selected players who registered earlier for the closed beta test. [11] At the beginning the matches within Guns and Robots follow a last man standing style of gameplay or "team deathmatch" [12] mode where teams of 5 must destroy each other until no robot remains. Each robot's components can be individually damaged and destroyed, meaning robots can be crippled and unable to move or shoot before being destroyed.
The open beta of the game was released in January 2013. [13] [14] That July, the development team behind Guns and Robots unveiled a detailed roadmap for the then-upcoming major updates in matchmaking and global rebalance. [15] Along with the major updates there were new modes released – "Capture the Batteries" and "Bomb Squad". [16] [17]
Counter-Strike is a tactical first-person shooter game developed by Valve. It was initially developed and released as a Half-Life modification by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess Cliffe in 1999, before Le and Cliffe were hired and the game's intellectual property acquired. Counter-Strike was released by Valve for Microsoft Windows in November 2000, and is the first installment in the Counter-Strike series. Several remakes and ports were released on Xbox, as well as OS X and Linux.
Deathmatch, also known as free-for-all, is a gameplay mode integrated into many shooter games, including first-person shooter (FPS), and real-time strategy (RTS) video games, where the goal is to kill the other players' characters as many times as possible. The deathmatch may end on a frag limit or a time limit, and the winner is the player that accumulated the greatest number of frags.
Urban Terror is a freeware multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by FrozenSand. Originally a total conversion of id Software's Quake III Arena, FrozenSand released Urban Terror as a free standalone game in 2007 utilizing ioquake3 as the game engine. While the game engine is licensed under the open-source GPL, Urban Terror's game code is closed source and its assets are freeware but not open content.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is a first-person arena shooter video game developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes. Part of the Unreal franchise, it is the third game in the Unreal Tournament series and the updated version of Unreal Tournament 2003.
Natural Selection is a modification for the video game Half-Life. Its concept is a mixture of the first-person shooter and real-time strategy game genres. The game was created by Charlie "Flayra" Cleveland, who later founded the company Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Natural Selection v1 was first publicly released on Halloween 2002, and is now at version 3.2. Natural Selection 2 was released in late 2012.
Ratchet: Deadlocked is a 2005 third-person shooter platformer, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 as the fourth installment of the Ratchet & Clank series.
Nosgoth was a free-to-play multiplayer action game, developed by Psyonix and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows through digital distribution. It was a spin-off from the Legacy of Kain series of action-adventure games, and took place in its eponymous fictional universe. Nosgoth employed a player versus player system in which each match consisted of two rounds. Teams were composed of characters assigned to one of two races: vampires, designed around hack and slash combat; and humans, whose gameplay was styled after third-person shooters. Between rounds, teams would switch to control the opposing race, and the team which accumulated the most points by fighting their counterparts won the match.
Astro Battle is a science fiction multidirectional shooter developed and published by American studio Lava Lord Games for Microsoft Windows and Linux. The gameplay focuses on players designing star fighters to fight against other players' ships in an overhead melee.
Counter-Strike Online (CSO) is a tactical first-person shooter video game, targeted towards Asia's gaming market released in 2008. It is based on Counter-Strike and was developed by Nexon with oversight from license-holder Valve. It uses a micropayment model that is managed by a custom version of Steam.
MAG was a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter video game developed by Zipper Interactive for the PlayStation 3. The game was released in North America on January 26, 2010, mainland Europe on January 27 and the United Kingdom on January 29. It was released in Australia and New Zealand on February 11, 2010. MAG received an award from Guinness World Records as "Most Players in a Console FPS" with 256 players.
Mechwarrior: Living Legends is a free, fan-created multiplayer-only game based in the BattleTech universe - originally a total-conversion mod for Crysis, it's since become stand-alone - running on Crysis Wars, and using CryEngine 2 as its engine. It's one of the few mods based on the BattleTech universe to have been sanctioned by Microsoft—who currently owns the rights to the Mechwarrior video-game franchise—and additionally received pre-SDK support and sanctioning directly from Crytek, producers of the games' engine. On December 26, 2009, an open beta was released via BitTorrent and other distribution methods. Because the project changes the play-style and feel of the game it is originally based on so completely as to be unrecognizable in comparison, it is billed as a "full-conversion" mod, since little to no trace of the original game's art or play-style exists any longer within MW:LL. It was created by American developer Wandering Samurai Studios.
Smokin' Guns is a first-person shooter video game. Smokin' Guns is intended to be a semi-realistic simulation of the American Old West's atmosphere. Gameplay as well as locations are inspired by Western movies, particularly those from the Spaghetti Western genre.
Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad and Rising Storm GOTY, now known as Rising Storm/Red Orchestra 2 GOTY on Steam, is a tactical multiplayer first-person shooter video game set during World War II, developed and published by Tripwire Interactive. It is a sequel to Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. The title focuses heavily on the Battle of Stalingrad and the Pacific Theater. The game was released in September 2011. The game is currently a Windows exclusive and contains many new features compared to the original, including a new first-person cover system, which can also be combined with blind firing, first person collision detection, Commander role and abilities as well as an entirely new system of statistics tracking and player levelling. Maps are much bigger and had immediate 64-player support.
Dino D-Day is a multiplayer team-based first-person shooter video game developed and published by American studios 800 North and Digital Ranch. It was released for Microsoft Windows on April 8, 2011.
MicroVolts is an online multiplayer shooter developed by Korean developer SK iMedia and published by Toronto-based publisher Rock Hippo Productions for Windows (PC). MicroVolts released its first closed beta phase on August 12, 2010 and launched its second closed beta on January 28, 2011. The game's open beta phase began on March 10, 2011. Rock Hippo Productions announced that the official release of the game would start on June 9, 2011. It was shut down on 9. September 2017 9 am GMT and the rights were allegedly sold to Masangsoft.
GunZ: The Second Duel is an online third-person shooting game created by South Korean-based MAIET Entertainment. It is the sequel to 2003's GunZ: The Duel. Gunz 2 began its first closed beta test in Korea in early 2011, however it has yet to be released. Gunz 2 is currently greenlit on Steam via its Greenlight program, and has entered into beta testing on February 17, 2014 via Steam Greenlight. The Steam version of Gunz 2 is available for international players, mainly in North America. The European version of Gunz 2 was hosted during its open beta phase by ProSiebenSat.1 Media. On 15 December 2014 the licensing agreement between MAIET Entertainment and Prosieben ended where MAIET opened a Steam server for the European region.
Robocraft is an online vehicular combat game developed and published by Freejam Games. The game is set on different planets, with players constructing robots to fight with and against others in battle. The game features contained garage bays in which players can build various functional vehicles with basic block-based parts, such as cubes and wheels, along with weapons that can be used for combat. The initial alpha build was released in March 2013, and gained over 300,000 players by the following year. It officially released out of beta on August 24, 2017.
Masthead Studios is a Bulgarian video game developer, founded in 2005, specializing in massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Their latest PC game developed and published was Soul Grabber, released on Steam in 2019.
Valorant is a free-to-play first-person tactical hero shooter developed and published by Riot Games. The game's development started in 2014 and was teased under the codename Project A in October 2019. A closed beta period began with limited access on April 7, 2020, followed by a release on June 2, 2020. It was originally designed for Windows only, but support for the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 was added in June 2024, albeit without crossplay between PC and console clients. Valorant takes inspiration from the Counter-Strike series, borrowing several mechanics such as the buy menu, spray patterns, and inaccuracy while moving.
