Gustav Legnavsky (born 23 September 2005) is a New Zealand freestyle skier who specialises in halfpipe. [1] He represented New Zealand at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. [2]

Biography

Legnavsky was born in Dunedin on 23 September 2005, the son of Pete and Bridget Legnavsky. [3] His father competed in mogul skiing in FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup events between 1990 and 1993, and represented Slovakia at the 1993 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, finishing 50th in the men's moguls. [3] [4] Gustav Legnavsky began skiing as an infant. [3] He is a student at Mount Aspiring College in Wānaka. [5]

Legnavsky competed in the halfpipe at the FIS Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships in 2019. [3] The youngest competitor in the field, he finished in 14th place. [6] In March 2021, he finished 16th in the men's halfpipe at the 2021 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships in Aspen. He made his FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup debut a week later, with a 27th placing at Aspen. [3] His best result in the Freestyle Ski World Cup 2021–2022 season was eighth in the halfpipe at Mammoth Mountain in January 2022. [1]

Representing New Zealand in the men's halfpipe at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Legnavsky was 19th in qualifying, and did not progress to the final. [7]

Pat competed for Switzerland in the men's halfpipe at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang where he finished 5th overall. He earned two bronze medals in the halfpipe events at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2017 and again in 2019. Pat was named to his second Swiss Olympic Snowboard Freestyle Team on 18 January 2022. He represented Switzerland in the men’s halfpipe at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing where he qualified for the finals and placed 11th overall. His career results also include nine World Cup podiums, five European Cup podiums and seven Swiss Champion titles respectively in halfpipe and early on in big air.

The 2021 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships were held in Idre, Rogla, Almaty and Aspen with the ski and snowboard cross events held in Idre from 11 to 13 February 2021, the parallel and giant slalom snowboard in Rogla from 1 to 2 March 2021, moguls and aerials held in Almaty from 8 to 11 March 2021, slopestyle, halfpipe and big air events of both Snowboard and Freeski in Aspen from 10 to 16 March 2021. Calgary was selected as a replacement of China to host the halfpipe, big air and slopestyle events, but on 20 January 2021, they pulled out.

The men's halfpipe competition in freestyle skiing at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 17 February (qualification) and 19 February (final), at the Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou. The podium consisted of all the medalists in the same event in 2018, but in a different order. Nico Porteous of New Zealand, the 2018 bronze medalist, won the event, bringing to New Zealand the second ever winter Olympic gold medal. David Wise of the United States, the champion in both previous events, won the silver medal, and Alex Ferreira, also of the United States, the 2018 silver medalist, this time won bronze.
