Gusto is a Canadian discretionary service channel. Owned by Bell Media, it features programming related to cooking, cuisine, and lifestyle, although it has since devoted portions of its schedule to entertainment programming.

Television in Canada officially began with the sign-on of the nation's first television stations in Montreal and Toronto in 1952. As with most media in Canada, the television industry, and the television programming available in that country, are strongly influenced by media in the United States, perhaps to an extent not seen in any other major industrialized nation. As a result, the government institutes quotas for "Canadian content". Nonetheless, new content is often aimed at a broader North American audience, although the similarities may be less pronounced in the predominantly French-language province of Quebec.

A discretionary service is a Canadian specialty channel which, as defined by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, may be carried optionally by all subscription television providers. It replaces the previous category A, category B, category C, and premium classifications.

Bell Media Inc. is the mass media subsidiary of BCE Inc.. Its operations include television broadcasting and production, radio broadcasting, digital media and Internet properties including Sympatico.ca.

Contents

The channel was founded in 2013, as Gusto TV, under the ownership of the independent producer Knight Enterprises with a Category B license. The network leveraged its library of original programming, as well as other acquired programming. On May 4, 2016, Knight announced that it would sell Canadian rights to the Gusto brand and associated programming to Bell Media. Subsequently, the Gusto channel was re-launched on September 1, 2016 under a Bell-owned Category A license previously used by its music channel M3 ; resulting in wider carriage for the new version. Knight retained international rights to the Gusto brand, and will continue to produce new programming for the Bell-owned network.

Knight Enterprises is an independent television production and broadcasting company based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Since it began in 1996, Knight Enterprises has produced more than 400 half hours of television. Knight Enterprises is best known for food television series including "The Great Canadian Food Show," "Table d'Hote," "Cook Like a Chef," and "Licence to Grill," "Junk Brothers," as well as the latest project, "This Food That Wine". In December 2013, Knight Enterprises entered the broadcasting landscape with the launch of its first ever television channel - Gusto.

A Category B service is the former term for a Canadian discretionary specialty television channel which, as defined by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, may be carried by all subscription television providers. Such services were called Category 2 until September 1, 2011.

M3 (Canadian TV channel)

M3 is a defunct Canadian English language Category A cable and satellite specialty channel owned by Bell Media. As with its sister networks, the network was headquartered at 299 Queen Street West in Toronto, Ontario.

On September 12, 2019, the network will be re-branded as CTV Life Channel.

History

Under Knight Enterprises

In October 2010, Christopher Knight was granted approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to operate "MmmTV", described as "a national, English‑language Category 2 specialty programming service devoted to luxury, from vacations and leisure activities to home furnishings and fashion." [1]

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is a public organization in Canada with mandate as a regulatory agency for broadcasting and telecommunications. It was created in 1976 when it took over responsibility for regulating telecommunication carriers. Prior to 1976, it was known as the Canadian Radio and Television Commission, which was established in 1968 by the Parliament of Canada to replace the Board of Broadcast Governors. Its headquarters is located in the Central Building of Les Terrasses de la Chaudière in Gatineau, Quebec.

In the summer and fall of 2013, several media outlets began reporting on aspects Gusto TV and its founder, Christopher Knight, owner of Knight Enterprises. [2] [3] In several reports, it indicated the launch of the channel on December 11, 2013. This was confirmed, when on December 5, an official press release was issued by Knight Enterprises. [4]

On August 29, 2015, Gusto TV broadcast Live Feed; described by the network as an example of the slow television concept, the special consisted of live footage from the kitchen of the Beckta Dining and Wine Bar in Ottawa. [5]

Slow television, or slow TV, is a term used for a genre of "marathon" television coverage of an ordinary event in its complete length. Its name is derived both from the long endurance of the broadcast as well as from the natural slow pace of the television program's progress. It was popularised in the 2000s by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), beginning with the broadcast of a 7-hour train journey in 2009.

Under Bell Media

On May 4, 2016, Knight Enterprises announced that it had sold Canadian rights to the Gusto TV brand to Bell Media, and that the current Gusto TV would be shut down and replaced by a new version of the service under Bell Media ownership. The brand's parent company, Gusto Worldwide Media (GWM), will license Gusto TV's current programming to Bell in addition to producing future series for the channel. GWM will continue to own international rights to the Gusto brand, and announced plans to launch an internet television service under the brand in 2017. [6] [7] Gusto re-launched on September 1, 2016, replacing Bell Media's music and entertainment network M3 under its existing Category A license. [8]

Category A services were a class of Canadian specialty television channel which, as defined by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, must be offered by all digital cable and direct broadcast satellite providers that have the capability to do so.

On June 7, 2018, during the CTV upfronts, it was announced that Gusto would be re-branded as "CTV Life", as part of a re-branding of several Bell Media specialty channels under the CTV name. [9]

The following year, it was revealed the channel will rebrand as CTV Life Channel on September 12, 2019. [10] Bell also announced that Mike Holmes (previously associated with HGTV Canada) programs (including the new Holmes 911) would air on CTV Life Channel. [11]
