General elections were held in Guyana on 28 November 2011. [1] The result was a victory for the People's Progressive Party, which won 32 of the 65 seats. [2]

Guyana Country in South America

Guyana, officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is a country on the northern mainland of South America. It is often considered part of the Caribbean region because of its strong cultural, historical, and political ties with other Anglo-Caribbean countries and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east. With an area of 215,000 square kilometres (83,000 sq mi), Guyana is the third-smallest sovereign state on mainland South America after Uruguay and Suriname.

Peoples Progressive Party (Guyana)

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) is a left-wing political party in Guyana. The party currently holds 32 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly, and has been the ruling party on several occasions, most recently between 1992 and 2015. In Guyana's ethnically divided political landscape, the PPP regards itself as a multi-ethnic organisation, but is supported primarily by Indo-Guyanese people.

Presidential candidates

The candidate of the party with the largest number of seats becomes President. The ruling People's Progressive Party nominated Donald Ramotar, the party's general secretary and advisor to outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo. [2] The Partnership for National Unity (an alliance of the People's National Congress, the Guyana Action Party and the Working People's Alliance) [3] nominated David A. Granger, a former commander of the Guyana Defence Force.

Donald Rabindranauth Ramotar is a Guyanese politician who was President of Guyana from 2011 to 2015. He was also the General Secretary of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) from 1997 to 2013.

Bharrat Jagdeo is a Guyanese politician who was President of Guyana from 11 August 1999 to 3 December 2011. He holds a number of global leadership positions in the areas of sustainable development, green growth and climate change.

Peoples National Congress (Guyana) political party

The People's National Congress - Reform is a socialist political party in Guyana led by David A. Granger. The party currently holds 22 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly. In Guyana's ethnically divided political landscape, the PNCR is supported primarily by Afro-Guyanese people.

Police protection

Election Day, November 28 was declared a national holiday and troops patrolled the streets in order to prevent violence as had happened in previous elections.

Results

The PPP won for the fifth straight time, but with a minority government. PPP candidate Donald Ramotar was elected President, but the opposition parties won a majority in the National Assembly.

Brigadier David Arthur Granger is a Guyanese politician and retired military officer who has been President of Guyana since 2015. He served for a time as Commander of the Guyana Defence Force and subsequently as National Security Adviser from 1990 to 1992. He was Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Guyana from 2012 to 2015.

The National Assembly is one of the two components of the Parliament of Guyana. Under Article 51 of the Constitution of Guyana, the Parliament of Guyana consists of the President and the National Assembly. The National Assembly has 65 members elected using the system of proportional representation. Twenty five are elected from the ten geographical constituencies and forty are awarded at the national level on the basis of block votes secured, using the LR-Hare Formula as prescribed by the elections Laws (Amendment) Act 15 of 2000.

Peter R. Ramsaroop is a Guyanese entrepreneur, author, and politician. He also serves as the chairman of Vision Guyana, a social/political non-profit organization based in Guyana. He was previously the CEO of Alliance for Change and a presidential candidate for the 2011 elections before siding with the People's Progressive Party (PPP). He was also a parliamentary candidate for the 2015 General Elections in Guyana under the PPP, and he is currently the economic adviser to Bharrat Jagdeo.

General elections were held in British Guiana on 21 August 1961. The result was a victory for the People's Progressive Party, which won 20 of the 35 seats.

2015 Guyanese general election

Early general elections were held in Guyana on 11 May 2015, alongside regional elections. The result was a victory for the APNU–Alliance for Change alliance, which won 33 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly. Following the elections, APNU leader David A. Granger was sworn in as president on 16 May 2015.

2019 Guyanese general election

General elections are currently due to be held in Guyana in early 2019 after the government of David A. Granger lost a vote of no confidence by a margin of 33–32 on 21 December 2018. The government had held a one-seat majority since the 2015 elections, but one of its own MPs, Charrandas Persaud of the Alliance for Change, voted with the opposition.
