The Project 58155 Gyurza-M class is a series of small armored gunboats in service with the Ukrainian Navy. The first two vessels were laid down at the Kuznia na Rybalskomu (previously Leninska Kuznia) shipbuilding plant in October 2012. [3] Originally it was planned to build nine such vessels by 2017. In December 2013 the Ministry of Defence withdrew its contract. The class is named after the Levant viper, Гюрза, Hiurza, in Ukrainian.

In mid-2014 construction of the Gyurza-M class was revived and the first two vessels were launched in late 2015. [4] In December 2016 they officially joined the Ukrainian Navy. [5] The new military contract for twenty vessels was to be completed by 2020. [5] [ needs update ]

Development and design

The modernized Project 58155 Gurza-M for the Ukrainian Navy started to be built at the Leninska Kuznia in October 2012. [6] Originally it was planned to build nine such vessels by 2017. In December 2013 the Ministry of Defense withdrew its contract.

In summer of 2014 construction of Gurza-M was revived and the first two vessels were expected to be completed in fall of 2015. [7] In December 2016 the first two Gurza-M officially joined the Ukrainian Navy. [5] The new military contract is for 20 vessels that should be completed by 2020. [5]

[18] [19] BK-01 was renamed "Marauder" after an 1878 ship of the Russian Navy, and was rearmed with 2 2M-3 turrets, replacing the BM-5M systems which were put on display with other captured equipment. Incidents

Kerch Strait incident

On 25 November 2018, two Ukrainian Gyurza-M-class boats, Berdyansk and Nikopol were seized by the Russian Navy. They were captured while they tried to cross the Kerch Strait en route to Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in the Sea of Azov. During the incident, three Ukrainian crew members were injured. [24] [25] The ships were returned on 18 November 2019, but Ukraine accused Russia of returning them in sub-par condition. [26]

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

Following the capture of Berdiansk by Russian forces, P 179-Vyshhorod and P 174-Akkerman were captured by Russian forces. [27] [28] [29] Russian forces captured another two craft, P-177Kremenchuk and P-178Lubny, during the Siege of Mariupol. [29] [30] [31]

On 4 November 2022, a Gyurza-M-class gunboat of the Ukrainian Navy was damaged by a ZALA Lancet drone, the first time a Lancet attacked a naval target during the war. [32]

On 28 December 2023, P-181Bucha is reported to be part of Kyiv air defences. [33]

Ukrainian command ship <i>Donbas</i>

Donbas was a Project 304 former Soviet repair ship that was converted to a command ship of the Ukrainian Navy's 9th Division. She was built on Szczecin Shipyard in Poland in 1969 for the Soviet Navy and entitled PM-9. "PM" is a Russian abbreviation for a repair ship, and literally means a floating repair shop. Donbas was destroyed during the Siege of Mariupol as a part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Centaur-class fast assault craft Class of small craft of the Ukrainian Navy

The Project 58181 Centaur (Kentavr)/Project 58503 Centaur-LK class is a series of small armored assault craft being built for the Ukrainian Navy. The first two vessels were laid down at the Kuznya na Rybalskomu in December 2016. The 58181 project was developed by State Research and Design Shipbuilding Center on the basis of the Gyurza-M-class gunboats, and the 58503 project number was assigned to the altered design used after construction of the first eight units began (by the contractor that oversaw their construction, PJSC ZLK. Designed for carrying patrol service on rivers and coastal maritime areas, delivery and landing of marines.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kerch Strait incident</span> International incident between Russian and Ukrainian navy

The Kerch Strait incident was an international incident that occurred on 25 November 2018 in the Kerch Strait, during which the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) coast guard fired upon and captured three Ukrainian Navy vessels after they attempted to transit from the Black Sea into the Sea of Azov through the strait on their way to the port of Mariupol. It was the first time that Russian forces had openly engaged Ukrainian forces during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

The Raptor-class patrol boat, Russian designation Project 03160, is a series of Russian high-speed coastal patrol boats. Boats of the class belong to the 4th rank ships in the Russian Navy. This project was developed by the design bureau of JSC Leningrad Shipyard Pella on the instructions of the Russian Navy. The boats are built at the Pella shipyard in the town of Otradnoye, Leningrad Region. Due to the great similarity in appearance, the boats of the project can be confused with the Swedish CB90-class fast assault craft and other transport and landing boats of the 02510 BK-16 project, developed by the Kalashnikov concern and manufactured at Rybinsk shipyard.

DSHK-1 Stanislav was a Ukrainian fast assault craft of the Centaur class launched in 2018. The ship was built as a successor to the Gyurza-M-class gunboats, and was capable of landing a platoon-sized unit of amphibious infantry for beach assaults.

Dnieper Flotilla is a riverine flotilla of the Ukrainian Navy consisting of two divisions and is tasked with patrolling and protecting the Dnieper. It was established in 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine amidst threats of a naval invasion from the north by Belorussian Dnieper fleet. It is in control of several small scale naval bases along the Dnieper.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">26th Naval River Ships Division (Ukraine)</span> Military unit

26th Naval River Ships Division is one of the two divisions of the Ukrainian Dnieper Fleet and till 2023 it was the only division of the fleet. It was established in 2022 and is tasked with protection of the Northern Dnieper against any possible Russian or Belorussian invasion attempt from the north and saw action during the Northern Ukraine campaign.
