The HKL Class M400 is an electric multiple unit train that will operate on the Helsinki Metro in the future. It is scheduled to enter service between 2029 and 2032 together with a new CBTC train traffic control system that enables semi-automatic operation. [2] It will replace the current M100 and M200 trains. The plan is to order 25 trains, and it will be possible to acquire more trains later. [3]
The trains will be designed for semi-automatic operation in accordance with the GoA2 standard. [2] In practice, this means that there will continue to be a driver in the cab who will take care of safety and, among other things, closing the doors, but the train will be driven by a computer, which means that the headway can be shortened to 120 seconds. [3] The M300 trains are also designed to be technically compatible with semi-automation. The plan was that the trains could later also be used in fully automated traffic in accordance with the GoA4 standard, in which case there would be no driver on the train at all. In this case, the headway could be shortened to 100 seconds. [4] However, HSL updated its statement in May 2025 according to which the M400 trains will not be equipped according to the fully automatic GoA4 level, but the rolling stock will only be equipped to be suitable for semi-automatic operation.
