HDMS Friderichssteen or HMS Frederichsteen was a Danish Navy frigate, built in 1800, and captured by the Royal Navy in 1807 at the Battle of Copenhagen. She was taken into service as HMS Fredericksteen (or Frederickstein) and served in the Mediterranean until being finally broken up in 1813.
Friderichssteen was a 32-gun frigate built to a design by F.C.H. Hohlenberg and launched in 1800. [5] She had a small hull, and consequently lacked the storage capacity for long-endurance cruises to distant stations. [4] She was laid up in 1801 and not fitted out until 1802.
At the end of March 1801 a British fleet arrived at St Thomas, in the Danish West Indies. The Danes accepted the Articles of Capitulation the British proposed and the British occupied the islands without a shot being fired. The British occupation lasted until April 1802, when the British returned the islands to Denmark.
Captain Carl Adolph Roth (1767–1834), sailed Frederikssteen to the Danish West Indies. There he also took his place on the Ruling Commission for the Danish West Indies for matters relating to the naval service. On her return voyage to Denmark in 1803, Frederikssteen carried the retiring Governor General, Major Walterstorff. [6]
Captain Carl Wilhelm Jessen sailed Frederikssteen on her second voyage to the Danish West Indies. [4] As with his predecessor, Part of his remit was to act for the government of the Danish West Indies on all questions of naval service and maritime defence.
During this period Frederikssteen served in home waters under two captains, each of whom died while in command. In 1805 Captain Rasmus Rafn (1764–1805), commanded Frederikssteen, which served in the Evolution (training) Squadron. [7] His successor was Captain Michael Christopher Ulrich (1760–1806). [8] The squadron, of ten vessels, was under the command of Rear-Admiral Otto Lutken, who raised his flag in Fredericksteen. [9]
After the 1807 Battle of Copenhagen, the Royal Navy took control of most of the Danish Fleet. Fredericksteen was sailed to Portsmouth, where she arrived on 19 November. She underwent fitting between 3 October and 27 February 1809. [2]
She was commissioned under the command of Captain Joseph Nourse in December 1808, who took her on convoy escort to the Mediterranean in June 1809. [2] Captain Thomas Searle replaced Nourse and returned her to the Mediterranean in November that year. [2]
Nourse was in command in 1810 at Smyrna. In May, he wrote a letter explaining the circumstances surrounding taking a schooner from the Ottomans. [10] The taking had become a matter of some dispute between Great Britain and the Ottoman government and Nourse provided his justification. Eight days later Mr. Stratford Canning wrote to Nourse stating that the British Government supported him and his actions fully. Canning explained the problems that were bedeviling the relations between the two governments and suggested gently that in the future Nourse avoid confrontation with the authorities unless absolutely necessary. [11] The English schooner that Nourse removed from Coron was Ann. [12]
Francis Beaufort was promoted to post captain and was appointed to command Fredericksteen in May 1810. However, his duties in the Mediterranean prevented him from taking up this post until December that year. [lower-alpha 3] Throughout 1811–1812, Beaufort charted and explored southern Anatolia, locating and recording many classical ruins. [lower-alpha 4]
In October 1811 Beaufort removed property from a "pirate boat", and on 3 December Frederickstein captured the polacca Teresina. [14] An attack on the crew of his boat (at Ayas, near Adana), by Turks interrupted his work and on 20 June 1812 he received a near-fatal bullet wound in the hip. [15]
Beaufort sailed her back to England as a convoy escort. [15]
The ship shared in the proceeds from Badger's detention in September 1812 of the American droit Sally – Britain being at war with the US at the time. [lower-alpha 5] Lloyd's List (LL) reported that Sally, a prize to Frederickstein, had arrived at Gibraltar on 18 September. [17]
Fredericksteen was paid off in November 1812. [lower-alpha 6] She was offered for sale, lying at Woolwich, in April 1813, [19] and was sold in June the same year. [2]
HDMS Najaden was a frigate of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy, which she served from 1796 until the British captured her in 1807. While in Dano-Norwegian service she participated in an action at Tripoli, North Africa. She served the Royal Navy as the fifth rate HMS Nyaden from 1808 until 1812 when she was broken up. During her brief British service she participated in some small attacks in the Barents Sea during the Anglo-Russian War.
HMS Clio was a Cruizer-class brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched at James Betts' shipyard in Mistleythorn in Essex on 10 January 1807. Her establishment was 71 officers and men, 24 boys and 20 marines. She served in the Baltic during the Napoleonic Wars, accomplished the re-establishment of British rule on the Falkland Islands in 1833, and participated in the First Opium War. She was broken up in 1845.
HMS Edgar was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, that saw service in the American Revolutionary, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Launched in 1779, she fought in the battles of Cape St Vincent and Copenhagen, two of the major naval engagements of the wars.
HMS Belette was an 18-gun Cruizer-class brig-sloop, built by King at Dover and launched on 21 March 1806. During the Napoleonic Wars she served with some success in the Baltic and the Caribbean. Belette was lost in the Kattegat in 1812 when she hit a rock off Læsø.
Grinder was a gunboat serving as a tender, rather than a commissioned warship, to HMS Anholt, the British garrison on the island of Anholt during the Gunboat War. Grinder's origins are obscure, but the Danes captured her in 1810 and the British recaptured her in 1811. She was sold in 1832.
Peter Nicolay Skibsted (1787–1832) was a Danish naval officer with a successful career marred only by the loss in 1810 of a squadron of three gunboats under his command to the British.
Jørgen Conrad de Falsen was a Danish-Norwegian naval officer who, despite being plagued by ill health, saw duty throughout the Gunboat War during the Napoleonic Wars, and eventually rose to the rank of rear admiral. He married twice, the second marriage being to a lady-in-waiting to the Danish Queen.
Hans Peter Holm was a Danish naval officer who commanded vessels of the Dano-Norwegian Navy in several actions. He commanded several naval vessels during the Gunboat War. His most important action occurred in 1812 at the Battle of Lyngør when a British squadron, led by the British ship-of-the-line HMS Dictator, destroyed his vessel, HDMS Najaden. Holm sustained wounds in the battle but survived, only to drown in an accident shortly afterwards.
HDMS Lolland was launched in March 1810. She served in at least four major engagements during the Gunboat War before she was transferred to the Norwegian navy after the Treaty of Kiel brought about the separation of Norway from Denmark in 1814. Lolland continued to serve with the Norwegian Navy until sold in 1847.
Jochum Nicolay Müller was a Norwegian naval officer who, as a midshipman, excelled at mathematics. As a junior lieutenant he met Horatio Nelson, and as a captain commanded the Finnmark squadron. He finally rose to the rank of Vice Admiral in the independent Royal Norwegian Navy.
HMS Cherokee was the lead ship of her class of 10-gun brig-sloops of the British Royal Navy. She saw service during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1810 she participated in an engagement that resulted in her crew qualifying for the Naval General Service Medal. The Navy sold Cherokee in 1828. She then became a merchantman trading between Liverpool and Africa. Cherokee was wrecked in August 1831 returning to England from Africa.
Christian Wulff was a Danish naval officer. He commanded HDMS Bellona on her expedition to South America in 1840–41.
HDMS Friderichsværn was a Danish frigate built at Nyeholm, Copenhagen, in 1783. The British Royal Navy captured her in 1807 and took her into service as HMS Frederickscoarn. It sold her in 1814.
Frantz Christopher Henrik Hohlenberg was a Danish naval officer who specialised in ship design and had little seagoing experience. He succeeded Ernst Wilhelm Stibolt as Master Shipbuilder (fabriksmester) at the Royal Danish Dockyards in 1796. His ships included five ships of the line and 18 frigates. Three of the ships of the line and nine of the frigates were captured at the 1807 Battle of Copenhagen and subsequently added to the Royal Navy. He resigned after a controversy in 1803.
HDMS Det Store Bælt was a frigate of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy, launched in 1782. In 1800, she was sold to the Danish Asiatic Company and renamed Holsteen.
Kongen af Assianthe was launched in Sweden in 1797.
HDMS Nidelven was a brig launched at Copenhagen on 1 December 1792. She was present at both British attacks on Copenhagen, and the British Royal Navy seized her at Copenhagen on 7 September 1807 at the surrender of Copenhagen. The British took her into service as HMS Nid Elven. She served between 1808 and 1809, during which time she captured a small French privateer. She was laid up in 1809. The Navy sold her in 1814.
HDMS Triton was a Danish frigate launched in 1790 which operated in Danish/Norwegian home waters and in the Mediterranean in the protection of Danish merchant ships - not only from Barbary pirates but also from potential British privateers. The period in which it operated was fraught with political and practical difficulties which led to two battles at Copenhagen and other, lesser, actions.
Broder Knud Brodersen Wigelsen was an officer in the Royal Danish-Norwegian navy at the time of the gunboat war with Britain. After the war he served in various capacities, principally in the Danish customs service.
HMS Mercurius was launched at Copenhagen in 1806 for the Dano-Norwegian navy under the name HDMS Mercurius. The British captured her at the Battle of Copenhagen (1807) and took her into service as HMS Mercurius. She spent her entire British career successfully escorting convoys to the White Sea, the Baltic, and every part of the North Sea. She was sold in November 1815 after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
