HMS Queenborough was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. The bulk of her career was spent in Home Waters. During her time in the English Channel she took three French privateers. She went to the Leeward Islands where two of her Captains died before returning home. She was sold in 1719.

Queenborough was the second named vessel after it was used for a 4-gun yacht launched at Chatham Dockyard in 1671, rebuilt at Sheerness in 1718 and sold on 11 July 1777. [1]

Construction

She was ordered in the Second Batch of eight ships from Sheerness Dockyard to be built under the guidance of their Master Shipwright, William Bagwell. She was launched on 22 December 1694. [2]

Commissioned service

She was commissioned on 10 December 1694 under the command of Captain Horatio Townsend, RN. On 5 March 1695 she came under the temporary command of Captain John Moses, RN. Captain Theophilus Hodgson, RN took command on 16 March. She took the privateer L'Esperance on 29 March 1695. Captain Hodgson drowned on the 6th of May. [3] Captain Thomas Swanton, RN took command on the 8th, then proceeded to the Irish Sea. Captain Gardiner, RN took command on 27 May 1697. The ship then was assigned to the English Channel and took the privateers Le Saint-Antoine on 8 July and Le Suprenaut on 7 August. She then transferred to the Leeward Islands where Captain Gardiner died in 1698. Captain John Oak, RN took command on 9 November 1698 and remained until his death on 13 January 1699. [4] On 12 January 1699 Captain Rupert Billingsley, RN took command and was ordered to return to Home Waters. [5]

In 1700 she fell under the command of Captain Henry Crofts, RN for service in the Baltic. in 1701 she was under command of Captain Edward Owen, RN off Dunkirk, and in 1702 she was with Beaumont's Squadron under command of Captain Thomas Day, RN.In August 1702 she came under command of Commander Abraham Tudor, RN for service in the North Sea. She remained in the North Sea in 1704 under Commander William Herriott, then in November 1704 under Commander John Jephcott, RN and 1707 under Commander Chaloner Ogle, RN. In May 1708 she came under Commander Charles Brown, RN. In 1709 she sailed to New York. During 1709 she underwent a great repair or rebuild at Portsmouth. [6] Between 1709 and 1711 she was under the command of Commander Michael Polkinghorne, RN on the Glasgow station. In 1712 she was under Commander Thomas Harwood, RN for 'owling' between 1713 and 1714. In July thru August 1715 she underwent a refit at Deptford at a cost of 1,125.12.2+14d. [Note 1] She was recommissioned in July 1715 under Captain Charles Kendall for service at the Firth of Forth. Captain George Fairly was her last commander for Baltic convoys in 1717. [7]

Disposition

HMS Queenborough was sold at Deptford for £102 [Note 2] on 20 August 1719. [8]

HMS Adventure was a 34-gun fourth-rate of the English Navy, built by Peter Pett II at Woolwich Dockyard and launched in 1646. With the outbreak of the English Civil War she served on the Parliamentary side until 1649. She was incorporated into the Commonwealth Navy in 1650. HMS Saudadoes was built by Anthony Deane after his transfer to Portsmouth Dockyard as the Master Shipwright. She was a smaller version of the Greyhound design. Initially she was a 8/6-gun sixth rate vessel. She was rebuilt in 1673 as a standard 16-gun vessel. She was commissioned in November 1669 then taken in hand at Deptford for her rebuild. She spent the majority of her career in Home Waters, participating in the Battle of Bantry Bay and the Battle of Barfleur. She went to the Mediterranean for a year in 1694. Her final service was in the Channel where she was captured by two French privateers and burnt in February 1696.

HMS Maidstone was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career between Home Waters and North America with junkets to the West Indies and once to the Mediterranean. Mainly employed as a trade protection vessel. She was sold in 1714.

HMS Jersey was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent most of her career in the West Indies. She was wrecked there in October 1707.

HMS Swan was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she went to the West Indies, then returned for service in the Irish Sea and English Channel. She then returned to the West Indies where she was lost with all hands in 1707.

HMS Speedwell was a fireship of the 1689 Programme built under contract. She would be rebuilt and rerated several times from a fireship to a 24-gun fifth rate then reduced to a 20-gun sixth rate and finally a bomb ketch. She was at the Battle of Barfleur in 1692 and had an attempted mutiny in 1699. After her first rebuild she was employed in the Irish Sea capturing four privateers and recapturing a sloop. She was wrecked on the Dutch coast in 1720.

HMS Lyme was a 32-gun fifth rate built by Mr. Flint of Plymouth in 1694/95. She spent her career on counter piracy patrols and trade protection duties in Home Waters, the Mediterranean and in North America and the West Indies. She was rebuilt to the 1719 Establishment as a sixth rate in 1720/21. Her breaking was completed in January 1739.

HMS Poole was a 32-gun fifth rate built by Joseph Nye & George Moore of East Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1695/96. She spent the first part of her career on trade protection and counter piracy patrols. After 1719 she was converted to a fireship. She was finally sunk as a breakwater at Harwich in July 1737.
