HNLMS Pieter Florisz (F826) (Dutch : Hr.Ms. Pieter Florisz) was a frigate of the Kortenaer class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1983-2001. She was named after Dutch naval hero Pieter Floriszoon, and her radio call sign was "PADI". [1]
HNLMS Pieter Florisz was built at KM de Schelde in Vlissingen originally and to be named Willem van der Zaan. However, she was renamed after the ship intended to be named Pieter Florisz was sold (during construction) to Greece. The keel laying took place on 21 January 1981, and she was launched on 8 May 1982. The ship was put into service on 11 October 1983. [1]
Pieter Florisz and Witte de With participated in the Gulf War and were replaced by Philips van Almonde, Jacob van Heemskerck and the replenishment ship Zuiderkruis, on 4 and 5 December 1990. [2]
In June 1994, the ship participated in the BALTOPS 94 naval exercise with vessels from several other navies. [1]
In 2001, the vessel was decommissioned and sold to the Hellenic Navy. [1]
The ship was transferred in 2001 to the Hellenic Navy, where the she was renamed Bouboulina using the radio call sign "SZCQ". [3]
HNLMS Jan van Brakel (F825) was a frigate of the Kortenaer class in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1983-2001. She was renamed HS Kanaris (F464) upon transfer to the Hellenic Navy in 2002.
The Kortenaer class was a class of anti-submarine frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Like other frigate types of the 1970s and 1980s, they featured a COGOG propulsion system with separate cruise and sprint gas turbines. Ten were built by De Schelde in Vlissingen and two by Wilton-Fijenoord in Schiedam between 1978 and 1982. Only ten served with the Royal Netherlands Navy: two were sold to Greece's Navy while still under construction and replaced by two Jacob van Heemskerck-class frigates which were an air defence variant of the Kortenaer class. The Greek frigates were renamed the Elli class. After service with the Dutch ended, eight of the frigates were sold to Greece in 1992 and the remaining two to the United Arab Emirates. Three of the ships have since been retired from active military service with one converted into the superyacht Yas.
