Radia Client Automation software is an end-user device (PC and mobile device) lifecycle management tool for automating routine client-management tasks such as operating system deployments and upgrades, patch management, application software deployment, application use monitoring, security, compliance, and remote system management. [1]

Although meant to fix problems, poorly designed patches can sometimes introduce new problems. In some special cases updates may knowingly break the functionality or disable a device, for instance, by removing components for which the update provider is no longer licensed.

In February 2013, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Persistent Systems, Inc. agreed to an exclusive license for Persistent to access the HP Client Automation technology. Persistent is now developing the Radia Client Automation product line, based on the original HP Client Automation products. HP is also selling the Radia Client Automation products from Persistent. History

Radia Client Automation has been called various names in its life-cycle: HP OpenView Configuration Management software, [3] Radia Enterprise Desktop Manager (EDM), [4] [5] and HP Client Automation Software.

HP OpenView is the former name for a Hewlett-Packard product family that consisted of network and systems management products. In 2007, HP OpenView was rebranded as HP BTO Software when it became part of the HP Software Division. The products are now available as various HP products, marketed through the HP Software Division.

Key Features

Radia Client Automation software can manage hundreds of thousands of client devices. It can be used to manage Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux desktops and laptops, mobile devices and tablets running iOS, Android and Windows 8 Series Mobile operating System, HP thin clients, and Windows and Linux servers. [7]

Microsoft Windows is a group of several graphical operating system families, all of which are developed, marketed and sold by Microsoft. Each family caters to a certain sector of the computing industry. Active Microsoft Windows families include Windows NT and Windows IoT; these may encompass subfamilies, e.g. Windows Server or Windows Embedded Compact. Defunct Microsoft Windows families include Windows 9x, Windows Mobile and Windows Phone.

Radia Client Automation uses a desired state management model [8] where IT defines how it wants devices to look through a series of policies, while agents on client devices proactively synchronize and manage to that defined state. [9] This model results in higher levels of compliance while at the same time significantly reducing the amount of effort needed to manage the environment. [10] It is especially effective for notebook or laptop PCs because infrequent and lower-bandwidth connections can limit the effectiveness of task-based models that are commonly found across the industry. NewWave

NewWave is a discontinued object-oriented graphical desktop environment and office productivity tool for PCs running early versions of Microsoft Windows. It was developed by Hewlett-Packard and introduced commercially in 1988. It was used on the HP Vectras and other IBM compatible PCs running MS Windows.

Visual User Environment

Visual User Environment was Hewlett-Packard's Desktop environment for the X Window System, intended for use on Unix workstations. VUE is based on the Motif widget toolkit.

Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, formerly Systems Management Server (SMS) is a systems management software product developed by Microsoft for managing large groups of computers running Windows NT, Windows Embedded, macOS, Linux or UNIX, as well as Windows Phone, Symbian, iOS and Android mobile operating systems. HP Business Service Automation was a collection of software products for data center automation from the HP Software Division of Hewlett-Packard Company. The products could help Information Technology departments create a common, enterprise-wide view of each business service; enable the automation of change and compliance across all devices that make up a business service; connect IT processes and coordinate teams via common workflows; and integrate with monitoring and ticketing tools to form a complete, integrated business service management solution. HP now provides many of these capabilities as part of HP Business Service Management software and solutions.
