Arinaitwe Rurihona, professionally known as Haka Mukiga is a Ugandan world and folk singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet and dancer. He sings in a number of local languages including Rukiga, Acholi, Rukonjo, and Rufumbira.

Education

Mukiga attended Vincent Alex Primary School in Mukono, Naalya SS, and Kisubi High School for his secondary school before enrolling at Makerere University in 2012 for a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Tourism. [1]

Although Rukiga is his mother tongue, Mukiga he composes music in various traditional instrumentations and languages, such as Acholi, Rukonjo and Rufumbira. [2]

Music career

He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays instruments like enanga, Omukuri, Enzamba, Guitar and various other guitars. He started his professional music carrier in 2015 playing at festivals, scoring films, and many other events like, Pearl Rhythm stage coach and festival. He also performed at the Milege World Music Festival in both 2014 and 2015, the Nyege Nyege Festival, Yella Cultural festival, Ongala festival in Tanzania and the Laba Festival. [3] [4] [5] [6]

On 13 April 2019, Mukiga played at the official Ugandan launch for the janzi, held by Ssewa Ssewa at Katonga Hall in Kampala. [7]

Undercover Brothers Ug also simply known as Undercover Brothers are a Ugandan music duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Jay K Mulungi and vocalist Timothy Kirya, whose music career sparked off when they won the auditions and represented Uganda in the sixth season of East Africa's biggest singing competition Tusker Project Fame. The duo released their first album titled At Dawn in December 2014. In December 2016, their song Nsikatila was nominated in the Best R&B Song category at HiPipo Music Awards (#HMA) 2017.

Jemimah Sanyu, also known as the Stage Gladiator, is a Ugandan musician, performer, producer, and voice coach. She has a commanding stage presence with a very strong voice. Sanyu has met people like President Yoweri Museveni while singing at the I am a Ugandan album premier. She has shared a stage with top African stars like Habib Koite, Navio, Joanita Kawalya of Afrigo Band, and Juliana Kanyomozi. and many other African stars.

Milege Afrojazz Band, commonly known as Milege, is a world music band from Uganda, made up of young talented musicians from Uganda whose enthusiasm is derived from the diverse cultural music traditions of the different tribes of Uganda into which they fuse contemporary elements to express the likeness of Uganda's people in a more current context. As of 2015 Milege's members are; guitarist Manana F. Birabi, vocalist Joanita Katushabe, lead vocalist Gloria Akugizibwe, bassist Paul Owembabazi and violinist Alison Nadunga as a seasoned member.

Giovanni Kiyingi, is a Ugandan folk singer-songwriter and world music artist. He is known for his skills as a multi-instrumentalist who plays the local Ugandan fiddle (endingidi), akogo, adungu, guitar, harmonica, flute, djembe, calabash, congas, drums, and maracas, among others. He was one of the Ugandan artists chosen to welcome Pope Francis to Uganda at Kololo on 27 November 2015.

Suzan Kerunen is a Ugandan world music singer and songwriter who performs African contemporary music in the local Ugandan language of Alur-Jonam as well as in English, Swahili and other world languages. She is a double Kora Award nominee who competed against Ethiopia's Michaih Behaylu, Astar and Bluz and Kenyan Wahu and a PAM Award winner. She was appointed Uganda National Tourism Ambassador to promote Cultural Tourism. Kerunen has shared stages with Africa's best artists and musicians including Kenya's Suzanna Owíyo, South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka, ASA and other Diaspora artists at the KORA ALL AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS in Benin, Mama Africa Miriam Makeba, Oliver Mutukudzi, Third World, Kinobe Herbert backed up by Soul Beat Africa at The International Jazz Festival.

Nsikatila, sometimes spelt Nsikatira, is a world-pop love song by Ugandan music duo Undercover Brothers Ug. It was released as the second single from their first EP album and first major release, At Dawn in December (2014) and re-released in January as the first single from their 2016 album, Hitlist. Co-written by the duo's Timothy Kirya and Jay K Mulungi and produced by Jude Mugerwa, the lyrics portray a lover who stammers whenever he talks to his lover.

Janzi Band, sometimes simply Janzi, is a Ugandan afro-fusion, contemporary and world music group formed on 27 August 2009 by Ssewa Ssewa and friends Abraham Sekasi, Jackson Kirya and Steven Oundo. The band has a hybrid repertoire of music, including notable covers as well as an original ethno-pop discography. The band has worked alongside a number of Ugandan musicians, including Lilian Mbabazi and A Pass.

James Ssewakiryanga Junior, professionally known as Ssewa Ssewa, is a Ugandan live performing musician, multi – instrumentalist, founder of Janzi Band and inventor of Janzi, a musical instrument.

Jackie Akello is a Uganda singer-songwriter and entrepreneur with a coffee brand Village Belle which she launched in 2017. She sings in Acholi, Luganda, Swahili, and English. She is known for her hit love ballad "Amari", the gospel hit "Samanya" with Levixone, and the war-themed pop hit "Apwoyo". Akello is an Acholi from northern Uganda, and most of her songs, like "Apwoyo" talk about the suffering of the Acholi both during and after the Lord's Resistance Army war that left Acholis out of their homes for a long time.

Janzi is a Ugandan string instrument invented by the musician James Ssewakiryanga, also known as Ssewa Ssewa. It was vetted and accorded utility model protection by the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) under the Harare protocol and registered by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau in 2017.

Pearl Rhythm Festival is a world music festival organized by the Pearl Rhythm Foundation to celebrate Ugandan music and hosted annually at the National Theatre. The festival is the climax of all the activities in the Pearl Rhythm Foundation... Preparations for the festival always start at the start of the year with auditions, training, recording and activation performances and then the festival towards the end of the year.

Rachael Ray Kungu, who uses the stage name DJ Rachael,, is a Ugandan disc jockey, businesswoman and recording artist, whose career spans over 25 years. She is the founder of Femme Electronic and proprietor of Scraych Rekords, a private audio studio.

Nyege Nyege is a collective in Kampala, Uganda that promotes outsider music, primarily electronic, by African artists. It was founded in 2013 by immigrants Arlen Dilsizian and Derek Debru. In addition to organizing ongoing parties and an artist residency, the collective runs two record labels and a multi-day annual festival. Its name refers to a Swahili word describing "a sudden, uncontrollable urge to dance."

Lilian Apio, commonly known by many as Apio Moro is a Ugandan musician who has been writing and singing Afro-soul music in her mother tongue (Japadhola) with the touch of English and Luganda, telling stories from her experiences through the journey of life. Music in Africa has described her music as having "a touch of hip-hop, RnB, Soul, and a little rock".

Pamela Elizabeth Acaye Kerunen, is a Ugandan writer, poet, actress, performance artist, installation artist, and art activist. She is the founding director of KEBU forum. She was the first female Ugandan artist to exhibit under the first ever Ugandan pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition of Biennale di Venezia (2022).
