Suzan Kerunen (born 1979) is a Ugandan world music singer and songwriter who performs African contemporary music in the local Ugandan language of Alur-Jonam (her mother tongue) as well as in English, Swahili and other world languages. [1] She is a double Kora Award nominee who competed against Ethiopia's Michaih Behaylu, [2] Astar and Bluz and Kenyan Wahu [3] and a PAM Award winner. She was appointed Uganda National Tourism Ambassador to promote Cultural Tourism. [4] Kerunen has shared stages with Africa's best artists and musicians including Kenya's Suzanna Owíyo, South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka, ASA and other Diaspora artists at the KORA ALL AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS in Benin, Mama Africa Miriam Makeba, Oliver Mutukudzi, Third World, Kinobe Herbert backed up by Soul Beat Africa at The International Jazz Festival. Career history

Kerunen started her career as a young girl with her two sisters in an all girl group Soul of Africa. She later went on to launch her solo career with her debut Album NIMEFIKA [6] a Kiswahili term meaning "I have arrived".

Kerunen has also performed at major festivals including -The International Bayimba Festival in Uganda, [7] Tusker Experience" at Silk liquid in Bugolobi. She is one of the organizers of the Pearl Rhythm Festival and World Music Day celebrations in Uganda. In 2009, Kerunen performed at The CHOGM celebrations in the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago, Blankets and Wine alongside Eric Wainaina, Radio and Weasel and Janziband. [8] [9]

Pimar Crossing Cultures Concert, 2017

In November 2017, Suzan held a concert titled Pimar Crossing Cultures which was held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel. She performed some of her new and old songs including Umbikulumbi, Faithfull, Echuli chuli, Minkulu, Tuk tuk and Tegiri, Olobo, Lek, Anyira, Hakuna, Pimar, Ugorunan, Acher Achera among others. The Concert was to celebrate her tenth anniversary in the music industry and to preserve cultural totems, proverbs, riddles and music. Other musicians such as Afrie, Ssewa Ssewa, Amaru and Giovanni Kiyingi also performed. [10] [11] [12]

Kerunene registered KNOW YOUR CULTURE FOUNDATION with an aim and vision of branding Uganda, A foundation that dedicates its effort to research, train and groom a culturally aware Ugandans and also promote cultural tourism as a development tool for Uganda .

Power of Hope Camp 2006, Kampala

Suzan used music in form of therapy and meditation to facilitate a retreat during the Power of Hope Camp; Kampala 2006 with the major theme "Building Community to Living Healthy and Powerful Lives" which was conducted in order to address some of the challenges faced by adolescents at the PIDC, Mulago Hospital. [17]

Heart sounds in Uganda "Enkuba Yomutima"2008

Done in the United Kingdom with a replica visit clinic in Hackney London visiting Uganda in September 2008 to highlight Mental Health in Uganda, the project raised awareness of mental health issues in the community, reduced community stigma and discrimination, and empowered sufferers of mental illness by promoting and improving mental health services in both countries. [18]

Fight against Cancer

In 2012, Kerunen collaborated with Rotary of Uganda on her third album launch, whose proceeds went to the cancer ward of St Raphael of St Francis, Nsambya Mission Hospital which needed completion where she invited other Kora Award winners like Jackie Chandiru and Benon to perform. “It is important for us to pool our resources and efforts to improve the care given to victims of cancer all over Uganda because it affects our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends." [19]

In total, he has released 4 albums, including Roots in 2018 and most recently Made in Africa in 2021. He was the first Ugandan artist to win the BET award in 2015.

Kabubi Herman is a Ugandan author and poet. He uses the stage name "Slim Emcee ". He is poetry teacher, as well as a performance poet. He took part in the spoken word project Kampala Uganda, in 2013.

Herman Ssewanyana is a Ugandan musician and percussionist. He is the current Band Leader, Musical Director and Percussionist with the musical group Percussion Discussion Africa. He is a member and percussionist with the musical band Afrigo Band, the longest-lasting musical band in Uganda, which was founded in 1975.

Undercover Brothers Ug also simply known as Undercover Brothers are a Ugandan music duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Jay K Mulungi and vocalist Timothy Kirya, whose music career sparked off when they won the auditions and represented Uganda in the sixth season of East Africa's biggest singing competition Tusker Project Fame. The duo released their first album titled At Dawn in December 2014. In December 2016, their song Nsikatila was nominated in the Best R&B Song category at HiPipo Music Awards (#HMA) 2017.

Jemimah Sanyu, also known as the Stage Gladiator, is a Ugandan musician, performer, producer, and voice coach. She has a commanding stage presence with a very strong voice. Sanyu has met people like President Yoweri Museveni while singing at the I am a Ugandan album premier. She has shared a stage with top African stars like Habib Koite, Navio, Joanita Kawalya of Afrigo Band, and Juliana Kanyomozi. and many other African stars.

Milege Afrojazz Band, commonly known as Milege, is a world music band from Uganda, made up of young talented musicians from Uganda whose enthusiasm is derived from the diverse cultural music traditions of the different tribes of Uganda into which they fuse contemporary elements to express the likeness of Uganda's people in a more current context. As of 2015 Milege's members are; guitarist Manana F. Birabi, vocalist Joanita Katushabe, lead vocalist Gloria Akugizibwe, bassist Paul Owembabazi and violinist Alison Nadunga as a seasoned member.

Giovanni Kiyingi, is a Ugandan folk singer-songwriter and world music artist. He is known for his skills as a multi-instrumentalist who plays the local Ugandan fiddle (endingidi), akogo, adungu, guitar, harmonica, flute, djembe, calabash, congas, drums, and maracas, among others. He was one of the Ugandan artists chosen to welcome Pope Francis to Uganda at Kololo on 27 November 2015.

Sandra Nankoma, previously known as Sandy Soul, is a Ugandan recording artist, singer-songwriter, composer, actor and performer of Afro-soul and jazz music. She is well known for her single Kaddugala from her debut album Ye'nze for which she won an award for Best Female Artist in African Inspirational Music at AFRIMA Awards in 2018.

Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, is a Ugandan businesswoman and politician. She is currently the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. She is also the Federation of Uganda Football Associations third Vice-President, the first woman to hold that position in Uganda. As well serves as the Chairperson Commonwealth Youth Ministers Task force voted to that position in 2017.

Arinaitwe Rurihona, professionally known as Haka Mukiga is a Ugandan world and folk singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet and dancer. He sings in a number of local languages including Rukiga, Acholi, Rukonjo and Rufumbira.

James Ssewakiryanga Junior, professionally known as Ssewa Ssewa, is a Ugandan live performing musician, multi – instrumentalist, founder of Janzi Band and inventor of Janzi, a musical instrument.

Jackie Akello is a Uganda singer-songwriter and entrepreneur with a coffee brand Village Belle which she launched in 2017. She sings in Acholi, Luganda, Swahili, and English. She is known for her hit love ballad "Amari", the gospel hit "Samanya" with Levixone, and the war-themed pop hit "Apwoyo". Akello is an Acholi from northern Uganda and most of her songs like "Apwoyo" talk about the suffering of the Acholi both during and after the Lord's Resistance Army war that left Acholis out of their homes for a long time.

Janzi is a Ugandan string instrument invented by the musician James Ssewakiryanga, also known as Ssewa Ssewa. It was vetted and accorded utility model protection by the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) under the Harare protocol and registered by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau in 2017.

Pearl Rhythm Festival is a world music festival organized by the Pearl Rhythm Foundation to celebrate Ugandan music and hosted annually at the National Theatre. The festival is the climax of all the activities in the Pearl Rhythm Foundation... Preparations for the festival always start at the start of the year with auditions, training, recording and activation performances and then the festival towards the end of the year.

Akite Agnes Ugandan comedian, actress, and philanthropist

Akite Agnes is a Ugandan stand-up comedienne, actress, MC, and philanthropist. She is popularly known for her role as Arach in the series The Hostel, where she portrays Odoch's girlfriend and the owner of a shop. She has also acted in Pearl Magic's Girl from Mparo as Mama Brian, the nosy neighbour. Her style of comedy reflects on the daily issues that face people as they go about their lives.

Patience Emily Tumusiime Rubagumya,, is a Ugandan lawyer, corporate executive and taxation expert, who serves as the Commissioner for Legal Services and Board Affairs at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda's revenue collection agency. She was appointed to that position on 1 February 2015, replacing Doris Akol, who was appointed Commissioner General of the URA. Rubagumya also doubles as the Company Secretary at the tax agency.

Rachael Ray Kungu, who uses the stage name DJ Rachael,, is a Ugandan disc jockey, businesswoman and recording artist, whose career spans over 25 years. She is the founder of Femme Electronic and proprietor of Scraych Rekords, a private audio studio.

Samantha Lillian Apio, commonly known by many as Apio Moro is a Ugandan musician who has been writing and singing Afro-soul music in her mother tongue (Japadhola) with the touch of English and Luganda, telling stories from her society and life. Music in Africa has described her music as having "a touch of hip-hop, RnB, Soul, and a little rock".
