Harjit Singh Grewal is an Indian politician and member of Bhartiya Janta Party. He is one of the senior leaders of the Bhartiya Janta Party. He served as the State Vice President of the Bhartiya Janta Party of the Punjab. [1] He is currently serving as a member of the National Executive of the Bhartiya Janata Party. [2]

Political career

Harjit Singh Grewal played a key role in the farmers' protest. Grewal met the Prime Minister as well as the Union Home Minister on several occasions to resolve the issue of the farmers' protest. [3] He also remained as the Chairman of Khadi Board. [4] He was one of the Star Campaigners for BJP in Punjab for the 2022 Punjab Assembly Elections. He contested the Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections in 2017 from Rajpura. [5]

During the farmers' protest, Grewal advised the SGPC that being a purely religious body, by getting involved into the farmers’ agitation, the SGPC is going completely against the mandate given to it under The Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 and Punjab Act 8 of 1925 that describe the prime role of the SGPC to manage gurdwara affairs. [6]

During the farmers' protest Grewal was a part of the committee that was made to discuss the issues of the farmers' protest. [7]

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security was breached in Punjab, Grewal claimed that windows of some buses were smashed and some workers were beaten up who were coming to attend the rally of the Prime Minister. [8]

In November 2021, Grewal was amongst the BJP leaders who met the Prime Minister seeking to reopen the Kartarpur corridor before the Gurpurab. [9]

In the month of July, 2021 some farmers entered Grewal's fields and destroyed the paddy saplings transplanted on 1.5 acres of land in Dhanaula, Barnala. [10] [11] An FIR was registered against the farmers who were involved in destroying the paddy saplings. [12]

Sukhbir Singh Badal is an Indian politician and Sikh rights advocate who served thrice as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and is currently the president of Shiromani Akali Dal, along with being a member of Parliament from the Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency. He is the son of Parkash Singh Badal, who has served five times as the Chief Minister of Punjab. He holds lots of power over the Sikh organizations of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. A businessman at heart, Badal and his family have ownership stakes in an array of businesses- including real estate, transport and other activities to promote Punjab's economic condition on a national level.

The Kartarpur Corridor is a visa-free border crossing and religious corridor, connecting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, near Narowal in Pakistan to Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur district, Punjab, India. The crossing allows devotees from India to visit the gurdwara in Kartarpur, Pakistan, 4.7 kilometres from the India–Pakistan border on the Pakistani side without a visa. However, Pakistani Sikhs are unable to use the border crossing, and cannot access Dera Baba Nanak on the Indian side without first obtaining an Indian visa or unless they work there.

The 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest was a protest against three farm acts that were passed by the Parliament of India in September 2020. The acts, often called the Farm Bills, had been described as "anti-farmer laws" by many farmer unions, and politicians from the opposition who said that it would leave farmers at the "mercy of corporates" since the farmer-trader disputes were taken to SDM instead of judiciary. The protests demanded the creation of a minimum support price (MSP) bill, to ensure that corporates cannot control the prices. The Union Government, however, maintained that the laws would make it effortless for farmers to sell their produce directly to big buyers, and stated that the protests are based on misinformation. Related endemic legacy issues include farmer suicides and low farmer incomes. Despite India being largely self-sufficient in foodgrain production and having welfare schemes, hunger and nutrition remain serious issues, with India ranking as one of the worst countries in the world in food security parameters. Due to unfulfilled previous demands 2024 Indian farmers' protest started on 13 of February 2024.
