Langomi-e-Hau Latukefu, better known as Hau Latukefu, Hauie Beast, MC Hau or simply Hau, is an Australian hip hop musician and radio host. He is best known as half of the duo Koolism (with Danielsan) and as the host of Triple J's hip hop program and Sky High on Double J.

Career

Hau Latukefu, together with his cousins Hounga and Sione, formed a group named Tribe Ledda L, the "L" standing for Latukefu. [1] By 1995, only DJ Danielsan and Hau remained in the group and they changed the name to Koolism, from a song with the same name which they had recorded the previous year.

Koolism has released a total of five albums and five EPs to date. They were nominated at the Australian Dance Music Awards in several categories in 2002 and again in 2003. They won an ARIA Award in 2004 for Best Urban Release for Part Three: Random Thoughts , [2] an album which featured guest appearances by Rodney P (UK), Nfamas (1200 Techniques), and Mnemonic Ascent. [3] Koolism featured in the Australian hip hop documentary Words from the City. [4] [5] Despite the duo leaving Canberra, with Latukefu moving to Sydney and Danielsan to Melbourne, they have continued to work together and released albums New Old Ground (2006) [6] and The 'Umu (2010).

As an individual artist, Latukefu has appeared as a guest on various other tracks, including Hilltop Hoods' "Another Word" (2001) and "The Blue Blooded" (2007), Urthboy's "Nuthin I'd Rather Do" (2007) and Resin Dogs' "For My People" (2013). [7]

On 14 April 2008, Latukefu took over from Maya Jupiter as the host of Triple J's weekly Hip Hop Show. [8] [9]

In late 2011, Latukefu launched Hauie TV, an online series intended to celebrate hip hop culture. [10]

Latukefu played in the Robert Hunter Cup memorial football matches in 2012 and 2013 to commemorate MC Hunter. [11] [12]

Together with Trials (Funkoars), he wrote the song "Yes, He Is", dedicated to Aki. [13]

At the ARIA Music Awards of 2007 the trio was nominated for 'Best Urban Release' for "Get Yours (Remix)". From 2004 to 2008, Jupiter hosted the national radio station, Triple J's weekly Hip-Hop Show. Thereafter she pursued her solo career based in Los Angeles and released her second album, Maya Jupiter, in December 2010.

Hilltop Hoods is an Australian hip hop group that formed in 1996 in Blackwood, Adelaide, South Australia. They are regarded as pioneers of the "larrikin-like" style of Australian hip hop. The group was founded by Suffa and Pressure, who were joined by DJ Debris after fellow founder, DJ Next, left in 1999. The group released its first extended play, Back Once Again, in 1997 and have subsequently released eight studio albums, two "restrung" albums and three DVDs.

Resin Dogs is an Australian hip hop group, formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 1996. Resin Dogs are a loose collective, a cut and paste sample band who use live drums, live bass, and elements of hip hop via turntables and samplers to create all forms of ritual dance sounds. The Resin Dogs consist of Dave Atkins, DJ Katch, Dennis Kudelka, Jonothan Bolt and Tony McCall, with regular guest appearances in Australia by Hau Latukefu (Koolism), N'Fa Forster-Jones and on their overseas touring they appear with Abstract Rude (ATU) (US), Mystro (UK), and BluRum13 (Canada).

When the Dust Settles is the third full-length album from Australian hip hop group, Downsyde and was released in December 2004 through Obese Records. It was produced by band members Optamus, Dazastah, Cheeky and Armee. All tracks were recorded and mixed at various members' homes except for flutes on "Bring It All Black" and "Arabian Knights", which were recorded at Studio Couch in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Ryan Leaf, better known by the stage name Dialectrix, is an Australian hip hop artist from Sydney. He was a member of Down Under Beats Crew and, since 2008, has been a member of Gully Platoon. In addition to his musical career, Dialectrix works in the construction trades. He was introduced to hip hop culture through skateboarding during adolescence.
