Heartbound is an upcoming role-playing video game developed by American indie developer Pirate Software. The game centers around a boy who deals with depression, anxiety, and fear as he embarks on a journey through different locations in search of his dog, Baron. [1] The narrative changes with different pathways and endings, depending on how the player interacts with the environment, other characters, and combat system. Each choice or interaction has the potential to change the game by adding dialog, encounters, or interactive objects to the world. [2]

Contents

An alpha version of the game was released for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux in November 2016 on Steam Greenlight. An early access version of the game has been released in December 2018.

Heartbound is a role-playing game that borrows many conventions from other gaming genres. Progress is achieved by exploration and player choice, and how the player interacts with the world shapes the story line and the environment for the rest of the play-through. According to the Pirate Software website:

"Every time you interact with an object, talk to an NPC, forget to turn off a light-switch, take out the trash, or disregard a sparkly bush the game remembers this and will change subtly for all further interactions. The greatest part about this design is that it already works and is in the current builds of the game. Both minor and major differences are going to pop up throughout the game and give the community something to share with one another. Everything you do matters no matter what kind of player you are or choose to be." [3]

Alternate reality game

A series of cryptographic puzzles can be solved outside of Heartbound, available from the game's website. These puzzles provide additional lore and offer an alternative narrative parallel to the game. Completing portions of the Alternate reality game (ARG) can foreshadow or unlock additional game content.

Development

Hall lists Secret of Mana , EarthBound (and the Mother series), Wario Ware , Secret of Evermore , and 1o57 as sources of inspiration for Heartbound. [1]

Heartbound was initially greenlit on Steam in December 2016. [4] A Kickstarter campaign for the game early 2017 met its funding goal in less than two days [5] and finished raising $19,272 of its $5,000 goal. Heartbound released into Steam early access in December 2018, [6] featuring the Chapter 1 (titled Homeworld) and Chapter 2 (titled the Tower) [7] of the game's five chapters, and an expansion to the game's companion alternate reality game. [8]

Over the next five years, Heartbound continued development, with much of it streamed live on the studio's Twitch channel. [9]

Reception

Both IGN and Game Skinny have shown interest in the direction the game is headed. [1] [2] On 3 October 2018, the game was in second place for top indie release on Game Jolt; [10] On January 1, 2024, the game is in first place. [10]

Heartbound is an indie RPG with a 'retro' graphical style and unique combat mechanics, which is somewhat similar to games created by Toby Fox, Undertale and Deltarune . These superficial characteristics lead to a brief controversy involving popular YouTuber MatPat [11] when a video on the GTLive channel about the game linked to Undertale, Deltarune, and Toby Fox but not to Heartbound or Pirate Software.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indie game</span> Class of video game, generally independently published

An indie video game or indie game, short for independent video game, is a video game created by individuals or smaller development teams without the financial and technical support of a large game publisher, in contrast to most "AAA" (triple-A) games. Because of their independence and freedom to develop, indie games often focus on innovation, experimental gameplay, and taking risks not usually afforded in AAA games. Indie games tend to be sold through digital distribution channels rather than at retail due to a lack of publisher support. The term is analogous to independent music or independent film in those respective mediums.

Sans was created by Toby Fox with support from the artist Temmie Chang. The character's name is based on the Comic Sans font, which is used for most of his in-game dialogue. This sans typeface was replaced with a "cutesy irreverent typeface" in the Japanese version of the game.

Previously known for her illustration work on Toby Fox's Undertale (2015) and Deltarune (2018), Chang used the game as a way to practice using the RPG Maker MV engine. Escaped Chasm received praise from reviewers.

Temmie Chang, also known as Tuyoki, is a video game animator, illustrator, and developer. Best known for her work as the lead artist for the critically acclaimed indie role-playing game Undertale, she also appears as a self-insert character in that game and in its follow-up, Deltarune. In 2019, she released Escaped Chasm, her first foray as the creator of an RPG maker game. In 2020 she released Dweller's Empty Path.

The music of Deltarune comprises multiple soundtrack albums created and scored by Toby Fox and also features guest appearances by Laura Shigihara, Lena Raine and Marcy Nabors. The first soundtrack album was released on Bandcamp on November 1, 2018, a day after the game was launched. In collaboration with Fangamer, Fox released the first chapter's soundtrack on vinyl in 2019.

She is revealed to have dark secrets, including ones that relate to experimentation. She also appears in Deltarune in a different role as a school teacher.

Papyrus (<i>Undertale</i>) Undertale character

Papyrus is a character introduced in the 2015 video game Undertale. He is a skeleton with a large ego who aspires to join the Royal Guard, and also the brother of Sans and friend of Undyne. He is eternally optimistic, and despite wanting to capture the human to prove himself, finds himself befriending the human instead. He does not appear in Deltarune, but has been alluded to. He was created by Toby Fox with support from Temmie Chang. He was originally envisioned as a creepy person who wears a fedora and has no redeeming qualities, though Fox did not like this idea, so he scrapped it. His character communicates with the Papyrus typeface, which had to be changed to a "faux hand-drawn vertical script" when translated into Japanese.
