Hem Kiry (born April 11, 1980) is a Cambodian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. [1] He is a two-time Olympian (2000 and 2004), and served twice as Cambodia's flag bearer in the opening ceremony. [2] [3] He also held a Cambodian record of 26.48 in the 50 m freestyle from the Southeast Asian Games. [4] Hem is currently working as a swimming coach for the Cambodia national team.

Hem made his official debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he competed in the men's 50 m freestyle. Swimming in heat two, he posted a lifetime best of 26.41 to earn a fifth spot and sixty-sixth overall by a 1.08-second margin behind winner Jamie Peterkin of Saint Lucia. [5]

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Hem swam for the second time in the 50 m freestyle. As part of an Olympic Solidarity program, he received a Universality place from FINA in an entry time of 27.56. [6] He challenged seven other swimmers in heat three, including 16-year-old Chris Hackel of Mauritius. He edged out Libya's Khaled Ghezzawi to take another fifth spot by six hundredths of a second in 27.49. Hem failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed seventieth overall out of 86 swimmers in the preliminaries. [7] [8]

He is a son of Hem Thon (1943–2015), who was also a swimmer. [9] His siblings, sister Hem Raksmey [10] and brother Hem Thon Ponloeu are also swimmers. [11]

Ravil Nachaev Uzbek swimmer

Ravil Nachaev is an Uzbek former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a gold medalist in the 50 m freestyle at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.

Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou is a Cypriot former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is a four-time All-Academic honoree, and an eight-time All-Conference champion in freestyle swimming. In 2002, Papachrysanthou was named Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award Recipient for his full commitment and dedication towards academic and athletic excellence, service, and leadership.

Agnese Ozoliņa is a Latvian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She is a three-time Olympian, a multiple-time Latvian and Baltic record holder, and a seven-time All-North Coast Atlantic Conference swimmer. She is also a varsity swimmer for the Kenyon Ladies, and an economics graduate at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

George Gleason is a former swimmer from the U.S. Virgin Islands, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. He is a two-time Olympian, a swimming captain for the Yale Bulldogs, and a graduate of sociology (2001) at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Gleason also capped his swimming career by an eleventh-place finish in the 200 m backstroke at the NCAA Swimming Championships in College Station, Texas, earning him All-American honors.

Han Kyu-chul is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian, and an eight-time bronze medalist at the Asian Games.

Allen Ong Hou Ming is a Malaysian former swimmer, who specialised in sprint freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian, a double gold medalist in the 100 m freestyle at the Southeast Asian Games, and a varsity swimmer for the Minnesota Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Damian Arthur Christopher Alleyne is a Barbadian former swimmer who specialized in freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian, a varsity swimmer for the Georgia Bulldogs, and a graduate of Bolles School and the University of Georgia, with a major in business administration.

Pedro Nuno Gonçalves Conceição Silva is a Portuguese former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian and a former Portuguese record holder in the 50 m freestyle (22.86). Silva is a resident athlete for Sport Algés e Dafundo, and is trained by his long-time coach, director, and mentor Mário Madeira.

Roshendra Vrolijk is an Aruban former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She is one of Aruba's first Olympic swimmers, alongside Davy Bisslik, and also a two-time Olympian.

Diego Mularoni is a Sammarinese former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a current Sammarinese record holder in the 100, 200, 400, and 1500 m freestyle since 2001. He has won a total of 13 medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe.

Ket Sivan is a Cambodian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. Ket qualified for the women's 50 m freestyle, by receiving a Universality place from FINA in an entry time of 34.68. She challenged six other swimmers in heat two, including 14-year-olds Sameera Al-Bitar of Bahrain and Christal Clashing of Antigua and Barbuda. She posted a lifetime best of 34.62 to save a seventh spot over Laos' Vilayphone Vongphachanh by nearly two seconds. Ket failed to advance into the semifinals, as she placed seventy-first overall out of 75 swimmers on the last day of preliminaries.

Hassan Mubah is a Maldivian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian, and holds numerous Maldivian records in the 50 and 100 m freestyle.

Javier Díaz González is a Mexican former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian, and a former Mexican record holder in the 50, 100, and 200 m freestyle. Diaz also attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he majored in economics, and played for the Purdue Boilermakers.

Stavros Michaelides is a Cypriot former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is a three-time Olympian, a triple medalist at the Mediterranean Games, and a former Cypriot record holder in the 50 m freestyle. In 2003, Michaelides was selected as one of eight Olympians to be the major pioneers of The Race Club in Islamorada, Florida.

Chitra Bahadur Gurung was a Nepalese former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. Gurung represented Nepal at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he became the nation's flag bearer in the opening ceremony. He also held a Nepalese record in the 50 m freestyle.

Teran Matthews is a former swimmer from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. Matthews competed only in the women's 50 m freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She received a ticket from FINA, under a Universality program, in an entry time of 31.87. She challenged six other swimmers in heat two, including Cambodia's two-time Olympian Hem Raksmey and Maldives' 13-year-old Fariha Fathimath. Diving in with a 0.94-second deficit, she scorched the field with a quick pace to a fifth-seeded time of 31.87 and slash off her entry standard by 16-hundredths of a second. Matthews failed to advance into the semifinals, as she placed sixty-seventh overall in the prelims.

Hem Raksmey is a Cambodian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and breaststroke events. She represented Cambodia in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also held numerous age group records in all strokes. She also shared a sibling tandem together with her brother Hem Kiry, when they both competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
