Sir Henry de Boulay Forde (born 20 March 1933) is a Barbadian retired politician and lawyer who served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1986 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1993. He also served as leader of the Barbados Labour Party from 1986 to 1993 and as the Attorney-General of Barbados from 1976 to 1981. [1] [2]
Henry de Boulay Forde was born on 20 March 1933 on Water Street,Christ Church,Barbados to a working class family and attended Christ Church Boys’Foundation School for his secondary education [1] and later attended Christ's College,Cambridge University for his law degree and was admited to the British and Barbadian Bar in 1959. [3]
Forde began his political career in the 1960s,having a hand in negotiations that led to Barbados's independence in 1966. After winning the Christ Church West seat in 1971,a seat he would hold for the next 30 years until 2003. He would then be appointed Minister of External Affairs and Attorney-General of Barbados in 1976,serving until 1981 in the Tom Adams administration. After Tom Adam's death,and Bernard St. John's premiership ended with the 1986 Barbadian general election he would assume leadership of the BLP in 1986 and the position as Leader of the Opposition until 1989 when Richard Christopher Haynes broke away from the then in-power Democratic Labour Party with some other DLP members,forming the National Democratic Party which became the second largest party in the House of Assembly of Barbados making Haynes the new leader of the opposition. [4] After the 1991 Barbadian general election he would then again become opposition leader until 1993,stepping down as BLP leader due to poor health. [1] Owen Arthur then succeeded him as party leader who would then go on to win the 1994 Barbadian general election. [5] [6]
In 1996,Forde would chair the commission inquiry,the Constitution Review Commission which reviewed the Constitution of Barbados in regards to preparing for Barbados to become a republic. [7] The commission held public hearings in Barbados and overseas. [8] The commission reported back on 15 December 1998,and submitted its report to the then Governor-General,Sir Clifford Husbands. A Referendum Bill was introduced in Parliament and had its first reading on 10 October 2000. With the dissolution of Parliament just prior to the elections in 2003,the Referendum Bill was not carried over. [8] [9] Haynes would later retired from politics in 1999 but still continues to practice law.

Sir Harold Bernard St. John,KA was a Barbadian politician who served as the third prime minister of Barbados from 1985 to 1986. To date,he is the shortest serving Barbadian prime minister. Freundel Jerome Stuart,OR,PC,SC is a Barbadian politician who served as seventh Prime Minister of Barbados and the leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) from 23 October 2010 to 21 February 2013;and from 21 February 2013 to 25 May 2018. He succeeded David Thompson,who had died in office on 23 October 2010 from pancreatic cancer.
General elections were held in Barbados on 24 May 2018. The result was a landslide victory for the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP),which won all 30 seats in the House of Assembly,resulting in BLP leader Mia Mottley becoming the country's first female Prime Minister. The BLP's victory was the first time a party had won every seat in the House of Assembly. Previously,the most one-sided result for a Barbadian election had been in 1999,when the BLP won 26 of the 28 seats. The BLP's 73.5 percent vote share was also the highest on record.
A by-election was held in the Barbadian constituency of St George North on November 11,2020 following the resignation of incumbent BLP Member of Parliament Gline Clarke,who has represented the constituency for the past 26 years,to accept the post of Barbados High Commissioner to Canada. It was the first election to take place since Prime Minister Mia Mottley's governing Barbados Labour Party won all seats in the House of Assembly in the 2018 Barbadian general election.

The Alliance Party for Progress (APP) is a Christian and social democratic electoral alliance in Barbados. It was formed on the 30 December 2021 by the United Progressive Party (UPP) and the People's Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) to contest the 2022 Barbadian general election. It is headed by the leader of the PdP Bishop Joseph Atherley with the leader of the UPP Lynette Eastmond becoming deputy head.
Ralph Thorne is a Barbadian politician who has served as Leader of the Opposition since 2024. He was elected in 2018 as a candidate of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) for Christ Church South on 24 May 2018. He later crossed the floor and became an independent in February 2024 which made him the leader of the opposition upon defection as the BLP had held all seats in the lower house up until that point. He was sworn in on 12 February 2024. On 19 February,Thorne was proclaimed as political leader of the Democratic Labour Party,while Ronnie Yearwood remains President of the party. Thorne's move has returned the DLP to the House of Assembly for the first time since 2018.
Sir Richard Christopher Haynes,also known as Richie Haynes,was a Barbadian politician and surgeon who served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1989 to 1991 after he left the ruling Democratic Labour Party and formed the National Democratic Party. He also served as Minister of Finance from 1986 to 1987. He was married to Jamaican-Barbadian senator Carol Lady Haynes.
