High Vis is an English rock band formed in London in 2016. Formed by the members of various hardcore punk bands, the band blends the genre with other styles like post-punk, indie rock and baggy. They have released three studio albums and four EPs.
Vocalist Graham Sayle grew up in New Brighton, Merseyside, moving to London at nineteen to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. There, he became involved in the city's hardcore punk scene, forming the bands Dirty Money with Burscough native Rob Moss, then Tremors with Moss and Edward "Ski" Harper. [1] [2] After Tremors disbanded in 2012, Harper began writing music influenced by post-punk. [1] This culminated in the 2016 formation of High Vis, [3] [4] with a lineup rounded out by Sayle, Moss and guitarists Romain Bruneau and Rob Hammeren. [4] The band took its name from the colloquial abbreviation of high-visibility clothing, with Sayle explaining in an interview with NME that "It is the unifying clothing item of the working class. And it also just alienates you completely if you put a high-vis on, nobody wants to see you or speak to you unless they want something." [5]
At the beginning of 2017, the band released the EPs I and I, [4] then on 7 December 2017, the band released their third EP III. [6] Their debut album No Sense No Feeling was released on 7 December 2019, however only a few months later the COVID-19 lockdowns began, leaving the band unable to perform. [5] Around this time, Bruneau departed from the band to move back to Paris, leading to the band hiring Martin MacNamara. [7] In the following months, Sayle and Harper entered the studio, culminating in the release of the Society Exists EP (2020). [5]
On 15 April 2022, the band released the single "Talk For Hours". [8] On 4 June 2022, they announced the release of their second album Blending for 9 September, which would feature "Talk For Hours", and released the single "Fever Dream". [9] On 15 September, they released the single "0151". [10] On 24 January 2023, they released a music for the album's song "Trauma Bonds". [11] Between 1 and 15 April 2023, they embarked on a headline tour of the United States and Canada, [12] followed by another tour of the country from 28 July to 23 August, which featured both headline dates and festival appearances including Sound and Fury, Riot Fest and Furnace Fest. [13] In the summer of 2023, they band performed at both Outbreak Festival, 2000 Trees festival, [14] as well as at Reading and Leeds Festivals. [15] Between 15 and 28 October 2023, they headlined European tour. [16]
The band released the one-off single "Forgot To Grow" on 25 October 2023, which was included in a compilation of Dais Records tracks DAIS223. [17]
On 11 June 2024, they released the single "Mob DLA". [18] This was followed by the announcement of their third album Guided Tour, to be released on 18 October 2024. The second single released was the house and garage influenced "Mind's A Lie". [19] This was followed in September 2024 by the single "Drop Me Out" [20]
In September 2024 the band contributed to the song "Stomach" from the Corpus II Ep 2 by New York band Show Me the Body. [21]
Their music has been categorised by critics as hardcore punk, [22] [2] indie rock, [2] [23] post-punk [7] [5] and post-hardcore, [24] incorporating elements of Britpop, [23] oi!, [25] house music, [26] dance music, [5] gothic rock, [2] punk rock, [27] baggy, psychedelic music, [28] shoegaze [29] and Madchester. [22]
Their music makes use of jangly guitar and hardcore style drum playing. [28] Sayle's vocals are often more similar to hardcore's shouted vocals than standard singing, [5] while also emphasising his scouse accent. [3] The band's lyrics early on were angry and expressed hopelessness, [28] while later on often discuss pushing through a traumatic upbringing to better oneself. [29] In a 2023 interview, Sayle reflected that since 2020, "A lot of the subject matter [of his lyrics became] just things that I was kind of reflecting on in therapy", [30] also stating in a Paste magazine article he believes "It's really easy to hide behind anger if you play in a hardcore band... That’s easy. Standing there, just having a microphone and singing is hard". [31] Class struggle is also a common theme in their lyrics, [32] as are references to the singer's Merseyside upbringing, such as the song "0151" named for the country's dialling code. [33]
In an article for Stereogum , writer Will Richards called their music "For hardcore fans wanting something a little sweeter or indie fans after some crunch or grit". [22] Revolver writer Eli Enis likened them to "what the Stone Roses would sound like if they were on Dischord Records". [24] Rolling Stone writer Sophie Porter said they merge the "tightly wound energy and seething passion of hardcore, softened (albeit slightly) with a post-punk maturity and a dash of Britpop idealism". [30] Brooklyn Vegan said of Blending "the band really found their sound, dropping a pin in mid-’90s Manchester, part Happy Mondays, part Oasis, and more than a little of the Verve's stadium atmospherics in there too, all filtered through their hard-charging, aggressive past." [34] Loud and Quiet writer Dominic Haley described their sound as "a frankly out-there melding of Judge style Youth Crew, Sisters of Mercy-like goth and '90s Britpop". [35]
They have cited influences including Gang of Four, the Stone Roses, [36] the Cure, Bauhaus, Wipers, the U.K. Subs, Chromatics, [35] Hüsker Dü, [30] the Chameleons and the Sound. [7]
Green Day is an American rock band formed in Rodeo, California, in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt, with drummer Tré Cool joining in 1990. In 1994, their major-label debut Dookie, released through Reprise Records, became a breakout success and eventually shipped over 20 million copies in the U.S. Alongside fellow California punk bands Bad Religion, the Offspring, Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise and Social Distortion, Green Day is credited with popularizing mainstream interest in punk rock in the U.S.
My Chemical Romance is an American rock band from New Jersey. The band's current lineup consists of lead vocalist Gerard Way, lead guitarist Ray Toro, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way. They are considered one of the most influential rock groups of the 2000s and a major act in the pop-punk and emo genres, despite the band rejecting the latter label.
Creeper are an English rock band from Southampton. Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. At the end of 2015, Nemati was replaced by Oliver Burdett and touring keyboardist/second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official band member. A third EP, The Stranger, was released in 2016 and reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten.
Bring Me the Horizon are a British rock band, formed in Sheffield in 2004. The group currently consists of lead vocalist Oli Sykes, drummer Matt Nicholls, guitarist Lee Malia and bassist Matt Kean. They are signed to RCA Records globally and Columbia Records exclusively in the United States.
A Day to Remember is an American rock band from Ocala, Florida, formed in 2003 by guitarist Tom Denney and drummer Bobby Scruggs. They are known for their amalgamation of metalcore and pop-punk. The band currently consists of vocalist Jeremy McKinnon, rhythm guitarist Neil Westfall, percussionist/drummer Alex Shelnutt and lead guitarist Kevin Skaff.
Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, lead guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley. The band originated from Chicago's hardcore punk scene and was formed by Wentz and Trohman as a pop-punk side project; Stump joined shortly thereafter. The group went through a succession of drummers before Hurley joined. Their debut album, Take This to Your Grave (2003), became an underground success and helped the band gain a dedicated fan base through heavy touring.
Basement are an English rock band formed in Ipswich, Suffolk, in 2009. Their debut studio album, I Wish I Could Stay Here, was released in 2011. The next year, Colourmeinkindness was released, charting on the US Billboard Top 200. After touring in support of Colourmeinkindness, the band went on hiatus in 2012. In 2014, they reunited to release the EP Further Sky. The next album, Promise Everything, charted in 2016 in Australia, the UK and the US. The band's fourth album, Beside Myself, was released in October 2018.

Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album and one demo. Their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, was their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.
Angel Dust is an American rock group formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2013, made up of members of Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice. They have released five studio albums to date; the most recent, Brand New Soul, was released in September 2023. The band have been signed to Roadrunner Records since 2018. In 2019, Billboard noted them as one of the most important bands in broadening the scope of what hardcore punk is. Kerrang! included their 2019 album Pretty Buff as one of their "25 Best Albums of 2019" and Loudwire named it one of the 50 best metal albums of 2019.
Chubby and the Gang are an English rock band formed in West London in 2019. Consisting of vocalist Charlie "Chubby Charles" Manning-Walker, guitarists Ethan Stahl and Tom "Razor" Hardwick, bassist Maegan Brooks Mills and drummer Joe McMahon, the band was formed out of a number of UK hardcore punk bands, including Arms Race, Vile Spirit and Gutter Knife.
Pinkshift is an American rock band formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2019. The group consists of lead vocalist Ashrita Kumar, guitarist Paul Vallejo, and drummer Myron Houngbedji. They have cited Nirvana, Arctic Monkeys, and No Doubt as musical influences.
L.S. Dunes is an American rock band fronted by Circa Survive, Saosin and The Sound of Animals Fighting vocalist Anthony Green, with My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero, Coheed and Cambria guitarist Travis Stever, bassist Tim Payne, and drummer Tucker Rule from the band Thursday. They made their live debut at Riot Fest 2022 and released their debut album, Past Lives, on November 11, 2022, preceded by the singles "Permanent Rebellion", "2022" and "Bombsquad". The band played their first UK tour in January 2023, and their first US tour in July 2023.
Gel is an American hardcore punk band from New Jersey. Formed in 2018 as a side project of powerviolence band Sick Shit, Gel has released one full-length album, two EPs, one demo, and one split mini album. Huw Baines of NME credited them for "shaping the sound of hardcore in 2023".
Zulu is an American hardcore punk band formed in Los Angeles in 2019. Beginning as a solo project by multi–instrumentalist and principal vocalist Anaiah Muhammad, the band grew to also include Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar) and Satchel Brown (bass). Zulu has released two EPs in addition to their 2023 debut album A New Tomorrow. In a 2023 article, Metal Hammer described them as the year's "most vital hardcore band".
Drain is an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2014. Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited Drain as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s.
Pest Control is an English hardcore punk band from Leeds, West Yorkshire. They have released one studio album, in addition to their 2020 demo. A 2023 article by Metal Hammer writer Dom Lawson called the band "the single most exciting band in the UK right now".
Pain of Truth are an American hardcore punk formed in Long Island, New York in 2020. As of 2024, they have released one demo, one split EP and one studio album.
