The Appalachian Highlands is one of eight government-defined physiographic divisions of the contiguous (conterminous) United States. The land area is linked together with the Appalachian Uplands of Canada to make up the Appalachian Mountains. Therefore, from a geographic standpoint, the term Appalachian Highlands is not a synonym for the term Appalachian Mountains.
