The Hoboken Mayoral Election of 2017 was an election to determine who will hold the office of Mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey in the upcoming term of 2018-2022. The election took place on November 7, 2017. Incumbent Mayor Dawn Zimmer announced that she would not run for a third term on June 20, 2017, hoping to pursue climate change issues higher up in the chain of government, and endorsed City Councilman Ravinder Bhalla. [2] On November 7, Bhalla was elected mayor of Hoboken, with 32.75% of the vote, becoming the first Sikh mayor in New Jersey history, [3] and the first turbaned Sikh to be elected mayor in the United States. [4]

The Mayor of the City of Hoboken is the head of the executive branch of government of Hoboken, New Jersey, United States. The mayor has the duty to enforce the municipal charter and ordinances; prepare the annual budget; appoint deputy mayors, department heads, and aides; and approve or veto ordinances passed by the City Council. The mayor is popularly elected in a nonpartisan general election. The office is held for a four-year term without term limits.

Dawn Zimmer served as the 38th mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey. She is the wife of Stan Grossbard. As president of the Hoboken City Council, she became acting mayor after incumbent Peter Cammarano's resignation on July 31, 2009 following his arrest on corruption charges. Zimmer is the first female mayor of Hoboken. She was first elected mayor in a special election for the balance of Cammarano's term on November 6, 2009 and was re-elected mayor for another 4-year term in November 2013. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, she was ranked #3, #4 and #5, respectively, on The Hudson Reporter's list of the 50 most influential people in Hudson County.

Ravinder Bhalla American politician

Ravinder Singh Bhalla, often simply called Ravi Bhalla, is an American civil rights lawyer, politician, and the mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey. Prior to becoming mayor, he served in the city council of Hoboken, New Jersey since 2009. On November 7, 2017, he was elected New Jersey's first Sikh mayor, first municipal politician to spend over $500,000.00 on an election campaign, as well as the first elected mayor in the United States who is a Sikh and wears a turban.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey were held on November 6, 2018, to elect the 12 U.S. Representatives from the state of New Jersey, one from each of the state's 12 congressional districts. The elections coincided with other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. Democrats won 4 seats from Republicans and changed control from 7–5 for Democrats to 11–1 for Democrats, the lowest number of seats Republicans have won in the state since 1912.
