The Hong Kong Esports Festival was an esports and music festival held in Hong Kong from August 25 to August 28, 2017. Held in the Hong Kong Coliseum, the Esports Festival was organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board in order to strengthen Hong Kong as a tourist destination for the younger generation. This event featured a Street Fighter V tournament that one of the 2017 Capcom Pro Tour Premier Events. The Hong Kong Esports Festival also featured a League of Legends tournament with teams consisting of players from various countries.

The Hong Kong Esports Festival was held in the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom in the weekend from August 25 to 28, 2017. The event was organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and funded HK$35 million from the Hong Kong government. The Esports Festival was expected to draw in 50,000 visitors, 10% of which would come from overseas. In an interview with the South China Morning Post , general manager of event and product development at the Tourism Board Mason Hung Chung-hing stated that the organizers hope that "through the festival we will be able to make Hong Kong a destination for the younger generation." Sony Interactive Entertainment set up PlayStation consoles outside of the coliseum. [1]

Also serving as a music festival, the Esports Festival featured performances by Korean pop stars and bands such as Exo and Super Junior. [2]

Street Fighter V tournament

Street Fighter V was the only fighting game played competitively at the Hong Kong Esports Festival. This tournament was livestreamed by the CapcomFighters Twitch channel. [3] The tournament was won by Daigo "The Beast" Umehara, defeating Kanamori "Gachikun" Tsunehori in the finals. Playing as Guile, Daigo gained the upper hand in an earlier match against Tsunehori by flooding the stage with ranged attacks, knocking his opponent into the loser's bracket. When the two met again in the grand final, Tsunehori won the first set against Daigo 3-0, but Daigo was able to defeat his opponent in the second set. The Esports Festival was the first Premier Event tournament Daigo had won in nearly a year, [4] and this win essentially guaranteed him a spot in the 2017 Capcom Cup. [3]

Capcom first announced the downloadable content Street Fighter character Menat at the Hong Kong Esports Festival, revealing her in a trailer during a break in the top 8 of the tournament. [5] [6] [7]

Capcom Pro Tour was cancelled for the 2019 tournament due to the Hong Kong protests. [8]

League of Legends tournament

A three-day League of Legends tournament was held at the Hong Kong Esports Festival. Players from Spain, Germany, China, the United States, and Hong Kong competed in order to win the HK$300,000 cash prize. [2] After defeating Team Europe 2-1 on Friday, Team Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan secured a spot in the grand final against Team China. [9]

However Zeveron went out of business the following months and they failed to pay him, resulting in him being a free agent.

Lee is a six-time Evolution Championship Series (EVO) champion; winning Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition v2012 in 2012, Street Fighter X Tekken in 2012 and 2013, Street Fighter V in 2016 and 2018 and Samurai Shodown in 2019.

Capcom Cup 2015 was a professional Ultra Street Fighter IV video game tournament that was held at Moscone Center in San Francisco on December 6, 2015. 32 players qualified for the tournament by winning one of the 16 Capcom Pro Tour Premier Events or by acquiring points at them. Kun Xian Ho won three of the Premier Events, coming in third place at the Capcom Cup. Many high-profile players, including Justin Wong and Bonchan, lost two consecutive matches during the early rounds of the Cup and were eliminated. Ho Kun Xian, better known as Xian, is a Singaporean professional fighting games player. Formerly part of Team Razer, Xian was the winner of Ultra Street Fighter IV at DreamHack Winter 2015. At Capcom Cup 2015 he got third place after being eliminated by eventual runner-up Daigo Umehara. He beat Yusuke Momochi at Final Round 18. Xian plays Gen as his character of choice, as his stances allowed Xian more options. He stated that Gen was a very underestimated character that people have compared to Dan Hibiki and have easily dismissed as weak.

Abdullatif Alhmili, better known as Latif, is a Saudi Arabian electronic sports player. Primarily a Guilty Gear and King of Fighters player, Latif competed in the Street Fighter IV tournament at EVO 2011, coming out of nowhere to claim second place. Latif is known for his skill with Street Fighter character Crimson Viper.

Capcom Cup 2016 was a Street Fighter V video game tournament that was held in December 2016. 32 players qualified for the tournament by winning one of the eleven Capcom Pro Tour Global Premier Events, Evo 2016, one of the four regional events, and/or by scoring high on the game's leaderboards.
