Hong Kong Social Workers' General Union (HKSWGU) is a trade union for the social workers in Hong Kong. It was established in 1980. The current president,Cheung Kwok-che is the member in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. It is one of the trade unions in pro-democratic Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions.
The SWGU was founded in 1980 after the movement demanded the government to take efforts to resettle the boat people in Yaumatei's harbour. Many social workers supported the affected residents and were arrested under the Public Order Ordinance in 1979. The social workers leading the movement felt constrained by their official organisation,the Hong Kong Social Workers' Association because it worked cooperatively with the government and did not approve of activists' involvement with the movement. [1] After the incident a group of social workers united and formed the SWGU on 4 May 1980. [2]
Together with the Hong Kong People's Council on Public Housing Policy,the Society for Community Organization,the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee,the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union,and the Hong Kong Federation of Students,the pressure groups became the backbone of the civil movements in the 1980s,including against bus fares increases in 1980 to 1981,curbing increases in public utility charges in 1983,and shelving the construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Plant in 1986. In the 2004 LegCo elections,Cheung Kwok-che,President of SWGU successfully gained a seat in the Social Welfare functional constituency. In 2012 Cheung co-founded the Labour Party with the Lee Cheuk-yan,General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions,SWGU's head union.
The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) is a pro-Beijing conservative political party in Hong Kong. Chaired by Starry Lee and holding 13 Legislative Council seats,it is currently the largest party in the legislature and in terms of membership,far ahead of other parties. It has been a key supporting force to the SAR administration and the central government's policies on Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU) is a pro-Beijing labour and political group established in 1948 in Hong Kong. It is the oldest and largest labour group in Hong Kong with over 420,000 members in 253 affiliates and associated trade unions. Presided by Ng Chau-pei and chaired by Kingsley Wong,it currently holds four seats in the Legislative Council and five seats in the District Councils.
The Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU) was a pro-democracy labour and political group in the Hong Kong. It was established on 29 July 1990. It had 160,000 members in 61 affiliates and representation in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo) to challenge government policies and push for legal protection of worker and trade union rights. It was one of the two most influential labour groups in Hong Kong,with the other one being the pro-Beijing Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions.
Lee Cheuk-yan is a Hong Kong politician and social activist. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong from 1995 to 2016,when he lost his seat. He represented the Kowloon West and the Manufacturing constituencies briefly in 1995 and had been representing the New Territories West constituency from 1998 to 2016. He is a trade union leader and General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions,as well as former chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.
The New Territories West geographical constituency was one of the geographical constituencies in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong from 1998 to 2021. It was established in 1998 for the first SAR Legislative Council election and was abolished under the 2021 overhaul of the Hong Kong electoral system. Located in the western part of the New Territories,it was the largest geographical constituency in Hong Kong with 1,308,081 electorates in 2020. It consisted of Tsuen Wan District,Kwai Tsing District,Tuen Mun District,Yuen Long District and Islands District. In the 2016 Legislative Council election,it elected nine members of the Legislative Council using the Hare quota of party-list proportional representation.
The pro-democracy camp refers to a political alignment in Hong Kong that supports increased democracy,namely the universal suffrage of the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council as given by the Basic Law under the "One Country,Two Systems" framework.
Leung Yiu-chung is a Hong Kong politician. He is a member of the pro-labour Neighbourhood and Worker's Service Centre,part of the pan-democracy camp,and a former long-time member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He represented the New Territories West geographical constituency between 1998 and 2016,and the District Council (Second) functional constituency between 2016 and 2020. Leung has also been a member of the Kwai Tsing District Council since 1985.
The Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union (HKPTU) was a pro-democracy trade union,professional association and social concern group in Hong Kong. Until its disbandment in 2021,it was the largest teachers' organisation in Hong Kong with some 95,000 members at the time of disbandment.
The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) was an organisation that focused on the issues of Hong Kong politics and livelihood,affiliated with almost all pan-democratic camps in Hong Kong. It was founded on 13 September 2002 and disbanded on 15 August 2021.

The Minimum Wage OrdinanceCap. 608 is an ordinance enacted by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong to introduce a minimum wage in Hong Kong in July 2010. The executive branch proposed a minimum wage of HK$28 (~US$3.61) per hour in November 2010,which the Legislative Council voted to accept after much debate in January 2011. It came into effect on 1 May 2011. Prior to this,there had also been a fixed minimum wage for one specific class of workers,foreign domestic helpers,of HK$3,740/month. The Hong Kong statutory minimum wage for non-domestic workers is HK$37.5 (~US$4.83) per hour,effective 1 May 2019.
The Labour Party is a centre-left social democratic political party in Hong Kong established in 2011.
The Fourth Legislative Council of Hong Kong was the fourth meeting of the legislative branch of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. The membership of the LegCo is based on the 2008 election. The term of the session is from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2012,during the second half of the Donald Tsang's administration and first two months of the Leung Chun-ying's term in office. The meeting place was moved from the Legislative Council Building to the new built Legislative Council Complex in 2011. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong remained the largest party with 10 seats. Notable newcomers to the Legislative Council included Regina Ip,Priscilla Leung,Wong Yuk-man,Tanya Chan,and Paul Tse.
Aron Kwok Wai-keung is a current member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong,representing the Labour,which he was elected to in the 2012 LegCo election and 2021 LegCo election. Kwok is a member of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions,the largest pro-Beijing labour union in the territory. He previously held the Hong Kong Island constituency,which he won in the 2016 LegCo election.
The 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was held on 4 September 2016 for the 6th Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo). A total of 70 members,35 from geographical constituencies (GCs) and 35 from functional constituencies (FCs),were returned. The election came after the rejection of the 2016/2017 constitutional reform proposals which suggested the electoral method for the 2016 Legislative Council remains unchanged.
Stanley Ng Chau-pei is a Hong Kong pro-Beijing politician and trade unionist and the incumbent President and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU),the largest trade union in Hong Kong,and also a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress. He is also as a member of the Legislative Council,representing the Hong Kong Island East constituency.
Socialism in Hong Kong is a political trend taking root from Marxism and Leninism which was imported to Hong Kong and mainland China in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Socialist trends have taken various forms,including Marxism–Leninism,Maoism,Trotskyism,democratic socialism and liberal socialism,with the Marxism–Leninists being the most dominant faction due to the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime in the mainland. The "traditional leftists" became the largest force representing the pro-Beijing camp in the post-war decades,which had an uneasy relationship with the colonial authorities. As the Chinese Communist Party adopted capitalist economic reforms from 1978 onwards and the pro-Beijing faction became increasingly conservative,the socialist agenda has been slowly taken up by the liberal-dominated pro-democratic camp.
Carol Ng Man-yee is a Hong Kong political figure,former chairman of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions,and former member of the Labour Party. She has been actively involved in labor movements over the years,including the "Baggage Gate" incident and the establishment of the British Airways Union. She ran in the 2020 pro-democracy primaries for the Labour Party,losing in the New Territories West constituency. Ng was arrested on 6 January 2021,accused of violating the Hong Kong national security law,after participating in the 2020 Legislative Council primary election,and has been remanded in custody since the end of February.
