Honkoop, also written as Honcoop or Hencoop, was a 18th-century East Indiaman of the Dutch East India Company. She was a merchant ship that made multiple voyages from Texel, Dutch Republic to Batavia, the Dutch East Indies. The Royal Navy captured her in 1781 during the Battle of Saldanha Bay. In 1782 during a gale, the ship with up to 313 crew members, was lost; she was believed to have foundered with all hands.

Ship details

Honkoop was built in 1770 in Amsterdam for the Chamber of Amsterdam  [ nl ]. She was made of wood, 150 feet long and had a loading capacity of 545 last (1150 tons). [1] [2] The ship had 20 guns.

History and fate

On 31 December October 1771, departing from Texel, she made her first voyage to Batavia under command of Pieter Sijbrandsz Flout. She made an intermediate stop at Cape of Good Hope for two weeks from 9 April to 22 April 1772, and arrived at Batavia on 26 June 1772. In Batavia Honcoop was replaced by Veldhoen for a voyage to Guangzhou, China. Honcoop therefore returned to the Dutch Republic. Departing on 30 October 1774, she arrived via Cape of Good Hope (23 December 1772 - 4 February 1773), and arrived in Texel on 24 May 1773, under command of Karel Philip Kassel. [1]

She made a second voyage from Texel to Batavia under command of Pieter Haverkamp. She departed on 8 December 1773, from Texel and arrived on 6 September 1974, in Batavia via Cape of Good Hope. She started her return voyage on 21 January 1775, and arrived in Texel on 17 July 1775, having stopped at the Cape of Good Hope. [1]

Her third return voyage was from Texel to Dutch Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) under command of Daniel Deune. The voyage was between 16 December 1775 and 2 August 1777. She was for half a year in Dutch Ceylon between 30 July 1776 and 11 February 1777. She returned not to Texel but to Rammekens, for the Chamber of Zeeland  [ nl ]. [1]

Her fourth voyage was again from Texel to Batavia. Departing on 19 July 1778, under command of Nikolaas Sevie, she arrived on 01 May 1779 in Batavia. In Batavia Honkoop replaced Dolphijn for a voyage to Guangzhou, China where she arrived in 1780. [1]

Capture

On 15 January 1781 Honkoop returned from Guangzhou, China to the Dutch Republic with a cargo value of ƒ 657,335 for the Chamber of Zeeland  [ nl ]. [3] After the regular intermediate stop at Cape of Good Hope between 31 March and 13 June 1781, she was captured as part of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War during the Battle of Saldanha Bay by a squadron of Royal Navy warships under the command of Commodore George Johnstone. [4] Also four other Dutch East India Company ships were captured, including Dankbaarheid . [4]

She was lost on 21 July 1781, While on her way to Great Britain as a prize.

Fate

Honkoop was lost in January 1782 as the result of a gale in the Indian Ocean and believed to have foundered with all hands. [5]

Vianen was a 17th-century Dutch East Indies Company sailing ship, used to transport cargo between Europe and the Indies. She was shipwrecked but refloated on her first voyage, and shipwrecked and sunk on her second. Built at Amsterdam in 1626, she had a gross tonnage of 400.

Aagtekerke was a ship of the Dutch East India Company built in 1724. It was lost without trace during its maiden voyage in 1725–26, sailing from Cape of Good Hope in the Dutch Cape Colony to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies.

Ravesteyn, also written as Ravensteyn, Ravenstein or Ravestein, was a 18th-century East Indiaman of the Dutch East India Company.

The Battle of Saldanha Bay was a naval action that occurred off the Dutch Cape Colony on 21 July 1781 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. A squadron of Royal Navy warships under the command of commodore George Johnstone captured five Dutch East India Company ships; her own crew destroyed a sixth. Casualties on the Dutch side were minimal if any, and there were no British casualties.

Asia was launched in 1780 and made six voyages as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). She participated in three actions, two against the French and one against the Dutch. She left the EIC's service in 1799 and traded between London and Lisbon until 1802 when new owners from Embden renamed her Reine Louise de Prusse and returned her to trading with the East Indies. Asia is last listed in Lloyd's Register for 1808 on the London-Batavia trade.

Walter Boyd was the East Indiaman Oosthuizen of the Dutch East India Company. Oosthuizen was launched in 1789 and made one voyage to the Far East. She was on her second voyage in 1794 when the British seized her. In 1795 British interests purchased her and named her Walter Boyd. She made one voyage for the British East India Company. She then became a West Indiaman. On her last voyage, in 1801, Walter Boyd captured a Spanish schooner but then foundered on the way back to London from Martinique.

Essex was launched in 1780 as an East Indiaman. She made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). On her first voyage she was present at an inconclusive battle with the French, and later at a second inconclusive engagement with a French frigate. In 1798 she was sold to be hulked or broken up.

HMS Princess was the Dutch East Indiaman Williamstadt en Boetzlaar that the British Royal Navy captured on 18 August 1795 at the Capitulation of Saldanha Bay. The Royal Navy initially rated her a 28-gun sixth rate. She quickly became a receiving ship, a guard ship, and a floating battery. The Navy sold her in 1816.

Haasje was built at Amsterdam in 1788 as a packet for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). She made three or probably four voyages between Texel and Batavia. A British whaler captured her in August 1797 as she was on a secret mission from Batavia to arm Dutch farmers in the Cape Colony to stir up difficulties for the British. She sailed to Britain and a French privateer captured her shortly before she arrived. She was quickly recaptured. She became a merchantman sailing between London and Dartmouth, and then London and Africa. She was last listed in 1806.

Osterley was an East Indiaman launched on 9 October 1771 by Wells, Deptford. She made two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) before the French frigate Pourvoyeuse captured her on 21 February 1779 while she was on her third voyage. She then sailed for a few years as a French merchantman.

Glatton was launched as an East Indiaman. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) before her owners sold her in 1772. Her new owner, James Mather, renamed her Lord Howe and first deployed her to bring timber from North America to England. Mather then hired her out as a transport. She was last listed in 1782 and probably was the "ordinance storeship Lord Howe" that foundered in that year.

The Oosterland was a large 17th-century East Indiaman of the Dutch East India Company. The VOC was established in 1602. The ship was wrecked along with another ship by the ship the Kallendijk on 24 May 1695. The shipwreck was discovered by amateur divers in 1988 on the South African coast a few hundred metres from the entrance to Milnerton Lagoon at the mouth of the Salt River. Excavation of the wreck started in the early 1990s in combination with the University of Cape Town and was led by Bruno Werz.
