Hung Huynh (born January 25, [1] 1978) is a Vietnamese-born American chef, best known as the winner of the third season of Top Chef , a reality cooking competition series on Bravo. He was the Executive Chef at Catch, The General, and Catch Miami.

Early life and career

Born in Vietnam, Huynh was raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and began his culinary training as a young boy in his immigrant parents' Vietnamese restaurant. He is openly bisexual. [2] He has a degree from the Culinary Institute of America; [3] he cooked at restaurants including Per Se and Gilt in NYC, and at the time of season three Top Chef's airing, he was the executive sous chef at the Guy Savoy restaurant in Las Vegas. [4]

Huynh also served as a guest judge in episode 12 of season four and in the quickfire challenge of the eighth episode of season five of Top Chef . Huynh appeared in September 2010 on the finale of season seven of Top Chef and assisted Angelo Sosa as his sous chef.

Huynh participated in the 2008 Bocuse d'Or USA culinary contest, competing to represent the U.S. in the 2009 international Bocuse d'Or. Although Huynh won the "Best Fish Award," the gold medal was awarded to Timothy Hollingsworth. [5] [6]

From the spring of 2008 through August 2009, Huynh was the guest executive chef at Solo restaurant in New York City. [7] From August 2009 through late 2011, he was the executive chef of Ajna Bar (formerly Buddha Bar) in New York City. [8]

Huynh opened The General, Catch, and Catch Miami with the EMM Group. The General showcases modern Asian fare, while Catch features mainly seafood. [9] In February 2015, he cut ties with EMM, citing creative differences. [10] After hosting a series of pop-up events in 2016 [11] [12] and consulting for various restaurants, Huynh took the position of chef de cuisine at Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs in January 2018. [13] He left the position in November 2018.[ citation needed ]

Later in 2018, Huynh joined Earl Enterprises, the parent company of Planet Hollywood, as a Partner of Asian Concepts. He helped open and was a chef/partner at Warrior, an Asian-fusion restaurant and lounge on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. [14] He also helped to launch and develop the fast-casual concept Asian Street Eats by Chef Hung Huynh, which is inspired by flavors from street vendors throughout Asia. [15] Locations were opened in early 2020 in Downtown Disney and at Los Angeles International Airport. [16] The Disneyland outpost closed just a year later in January 2021. [17] Huynh was no longer employed by Earl Enterprises as of December 2020.[ citation needed ]

In July 2021, Huynh was hired as executive chef at a new pan-Mediterranean restaurant, Ava MediterrAegean in Winter Park, Florida. [18] However, he left the project in December 2021 before the restaurant opening to the public. [19]

In March 2022, Huynh signed on as the new Director of Culinary Innovation for Orlando-based Omei Restaurant Group. [20]

<i>Top Chef: Miami</i> Season 3 of American television series

Top Chef: Miami is the third season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first filmed in Miami, Florida, before concluding in Aspen, Colorado. The season was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Series, and garnered the Emmy Award for Best Editing in the category. Season 3 premiered on June 13, 2007 and ended on October 10, 2007. Padma Lakshmi returned with Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, and new judge Ted Allen, who switched off with Simmons throughout the season. Top Chef: San Francisco contestant Lee Anne Wong was brought in as a food consultant and assisted in planning the challenges. Production took place in April and May 2007 in Miami Beach, Florida, with production activity centered at the Fontainebleau Hotel. The winning recipe from each week's episode of Season 3 was featured on Bravo's Top Chef website and prepared by Lee Anne Wong in a web series called The Wong Way to Cook. In the season finale, Hung Huynh was declared the winner over runners-up Dale Levitski and Casey Thompson. Thompson was voted Fan Favorite.

The International Exhibition of Culinary Art, termed the Culinary Olympics, is a quadrennial chef competition, and the biggest culinary exhibition in the world. Last held in 2020, the event has in recent years been organised in Stuttgart, Germany.

He has won multiple awards throughout his career, including the 2010 James Beard Foundation's Rising Chef of the Year Award, the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Rising Star Chef, and the 2009 Bocuse d'Or, where he placed sixth. He was the winner of the 2018 cooking competition The Final Table.

Eyck Zimmer is an English chef. He was awarded the Chef of the Year in Great Britain 2006 and the Chef of the Year in Portugal 2008. Eyck's initial training was at the Erfurter Hof, part of the Interhotel chain. He then worked in a number of well-known hotels in Europe, Palasthotel, Grand Hotel Regina, The Dorchester, The Berkeley (London), The Lanesborough (London), Claridge's (London), The Ritz (London), Choupana Hills in Madeira and the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, UK. Andel's Berlin Hotel, Germany. From 2010 to 2014 he held the position of Chef de Cuisine at the Hong Kong Jockey Clubs Derby Restaurant. and Bar in Hong Kong SAR. Eyck returned 2014 in the capacity of Culinary Director to the andels hotel Berlin with its skykitchen restaurant, gaining 1* Michelin the same year. After that he was the Chef de Cuisine at the Adlon in Berlin Germany for a short period of time. Currently he is the Culinary Director at the Square Nine Hotel in Belgrade Serbia, a small luxury five star hotel and member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

Kevin Gillespie is an American chef, author and former Top Chef contestant. He is a former co-owner and executive chef at Woodfire Grill in Atlanta. He opened Gunshow, a restaurant in Atlanta, in 2013 and Revival, a restaurant in Decatur, Georgia, in 2015. Gillespie also started Red Beard Restaurants, allowing Gillespie to expand and provide consulting services to other start-ups. Kevin Gillespie's Gamechanger opened in August 2017 on the 200 concourse western end zone of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Bocuse d'Or USA is a biennial chef championship, where the winner is selected to represent the U.S. in the international Bocuse d'Or competition. Following 20 years of American representation in the competition, in 2008 Paul Bocuse asked Daniel Boulud to establish a structure for the selection of Team USA, who along with Thomas Keller and Jérôme Bocuse form the Board of Directors of the Bocuse d'Or USA Foundation. The first Bocuse d'Or USA competition was held in September 2008.

Jamal James Kent is an American chef. He is the winner of the Bocuse d'Or USA 2010. He and his commis Tom Allan went on to represent the U.S. at the international finals of Bocuse d'Or in Lyon, France, in January 2011, where they placed tenth.

Jérôme Bocuse is a French chef. He is the son of the Nouvelle Cuisine pioneer Paul Bocuse.

Gunnar Hvarnes is a Norwegian chef, and the country's delegate to participate in the 2010 Bocuse d'Or Europe and the 2011 Bocuse d'Or international finals, where he won the bronze medal.

The Bocuse d'Or is a biennial world chef championship. Named for the chef Paul Bocuse, the event takes place during two days near the end of January in Lyon, France, at the SIRHA International Hotel, Catering and Food Trade Exhibition, and is one of the world's most prestigious cooking competitions.

Bruno Menard is a French chef. Early in his career, he became executive chef at the restaurant Tatou Tokyo, from which he was invited to compete on Iron Chef. He began to experiment with combining French and Japanese cuisine when he took over as chef at the Ritz-Carlton in Osaka. He then took over "The Dining Room" restaurant at Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta and was awarded five stars by Mobil Travel Guide and five diamonds by AAA guide. In the early 2000s, he moved back to Tokyo to take over as head chef at L'Osier, earning 3 Michelin stars. After L'Osier closed in 2011 for repair, he left the restaurant to start a consulting firm and has judged on MasterChef Asia. He has also been president of Bocuse d'Or Singapore and helped found the Bocuse d'Or Singapore Academy. Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, France named a street after him—Rue Bruno Menard.
