Melissa King (born October 11, 1983) is an American chef and television personality. King is known for her appearances on the reality competition series Top Chef . She first appeared on the twelfth season of Top Chef: Boston , placing fourth; she then returned for the seventeenth season, Top Chef: All-Stars L.A. , which she won. [1] She specializes in modern Californian cuisine with Asian flavors. [2]
King grew up in Los Angeles, California and was the younger of two sisters. Her parents were Chinese immigrants, who moved from Hong Kong to Los Angeles in the late 1960s. Her mother was an aerospace engineer and her father an electrical engineer. She attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, before transferring to the University of California, Irvine, where she graduated with a B.A. in cognitive science. She then attended The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, earning an A.A. in culinary arts. [3] [4] She is also a certified level 1 Sommelier from The Court of Master Sommeliers.
King took her first kitchen job when she was 17 years old as a pastry assistant at the Getty Museum. She subsequently trained under several Michelin-star and James Beard-recognized chefs including Dominique Crenn and Ron Siegel over the next 10 years. [3] [4] She has worked at several Michelin starred Bay Area restaurants such as Campton Place, Luce, and The Dining Room (Ritz-Carlton San Francisco). She was a chef ambassador for Whole Foods Market. She was selected as one of the "Best Female Chefs in San Francisco." [5]
King earned national recognition after placing fourth as a finalist on Season 12 of Bravo's television series, Top Chef. [6] King was invited back for Season 17 of Top Chef, the show's second all-stars season, where she was announced the winner and received the US$250,000 grand prize. [7] [8] She was subsequently voted as the "fan favorite" of Season 17, earning her another US$10,000, which she donated to several non-profit organizations, including the Black Visions Collective, Asian Americans for Equality, Asian Youth Center, and The Trevor Project. [9] She has the most single-season individual challenge wins of any competitor in the history of Top Chef. [10] She says her experience on Top Chef changed her perspective on her career. [11] Specifically, she stated, "My entire life I grew up thinking I wanted to own a restaurant and be a chef and get a Michelin star. It wasn't until my experience with Top Chef that the world became so much more vast and open. I can do anything I want." [12] King owns a company focused on culinary partnerships and experiences and is the creator of King Sauce, a small batch line of signature sauces. [13]
King made her modeling debut in a global Levi Strauss Pride Campaign in 2018. [14]
King subsequently appeared in the Gap Inc SP21 Individual Anthems campaign [15] in 2021, as well as on the company's Instagram Reel interviews coinciding with the campaign. [16]
King was a finalist of Bravo's Top Chef (season 12) in 2014 and was the winner of Top Chef All Stars in 2020. King appeared in Top Chef (season 18) and Top Chef (season 19) as a guest judge.
In 2021, King appeared in Sesame Street: See Us Coming Together Special, in celebration of the AAPI community. [17]
In 2022, King appeared as a guest judge in Food Network’s The Julia Child Challenge. [18]
She has made appearances at prominent culinary and music festivals; examples in the U.S. include Coachella, Outsidelands, South Beach Wine & Food Festival, Pebble Beach Food & Wine, Kohler Food & Wine Experience, and KitchenAid SrPGA. [19] [20] [21]
King is openly gay and an advocate for LGBTQ equality as well as women's empowerment, environmental sustainability, and food education for youths.
She was awarded Grand Marshall for San Francisco Pride 2016. [22] [23]
King spoke out against anti-Asian racism and harassment during the COVID-19 pandemic in alliance with Ad Council in a PSA campaign directed by Alan Yang. [24]
King hosts virtual cooking experiences with proceeds supporting charities such as The Okra Project, No Kid Hungry, The Trevor Project, Asian Pacific Islanders for Equality, National Black Justice Coalition. [25]

Thomas Aloysius Keller is an American chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author. He and his landmark Napa Valley restaurant, The French Laundry in Yountville, California, have won multiple awards from the James Beard Foundation, notably the Best California Chef in 1996, and the Best Chef in America in 1997. The restaurant was a perennial winner in the annual Restaurant list of the Top 50 Restaurants of the World; the voting process has since been changed to disallow previous winners from being considered.

Ron Siegel is an American chef who formerly worked in San Francisco. In August 2012, it was announced he was joining San Francisco restaurant, Michael Mina, as executive chef. He had been Chef of the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, taking over for Chef Sylvain Portray in 2004. Siegel is perhaps best known for his 1998 appearance on Iron Chef, becoming the first ever U.S. citizen to win in Kitchen Stadium. His cooking style is known for blending haute French cuisine with subtle Japanese touches.
Michael Mina is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author. He is the founder of the Mina Group, a restaurant management company operating over 40 restaurants worldwide. He is the executive chef at his two namesake restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas, which each have earned a star in the Michelin Guide. He authored his first cookbook in 2006 and has made numerous television appearances.
Tiffani Faison is an American celebrity chef and restaurateur. She is based in Boston, has served as a judge on Food Network's television series Chopped, and is a four-time James Beard Award Finalist for Best Chef: Northeast. She was the winner of Season 3 of Tournament of Champions and was named Boston's Best Chef by Boston Magazine in 2022. She was one of two finalists on the first season of Bravo's reality show Top Chef, where she finished second to Harold Dieterle.
Top Chef: San Francisco, originally broadcast simply as Top Chef, is the first season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first filmed in San Francisco, California, before concluding in Las Vegas, Nevada. The season premiered on March 8, 2006, and ended on May 24, 2006. The show featured chefs from around the United States living together in one house and competing in a series of culinary challenges. The prizes for the winner of the competition included a feature in Food & Wine Magazine, a showcase at the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado, a Kenmore Elite kitchen set, and US$100,000. The series was hosted by Katie Lee Joel, in her only season as host, and judged by chef Tom Colicchio and food writer Gail Simmons. In the season finale, Harold Dieterle was declared the winner over runner-up Tiffani Faison.
Lee Anne Wong is an American chef, restaurateur, a television culinary producer, and television figure. She has appeared as a competitor on reality television cooking competitions, and she is a Top Chef television series alum. Wong was based in New York City, before moving to Hawaii in 2013. She has also worked extensively as a culinary producer for American television series, including for four seasons of Top Chef.
Stephanie Izard is an American chef and television personality best known as the first female chef to win Bravo's Top Chef, taking the title during its fourth season. She is the co-owner and executive chef of three award-winning Chicago restaurants, Girl and the Goat, Little Goat, and Duck Duck Goat, and opened her first restaurant, Scylla as chef-owner at the age of 27. Izard received a James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Chef: Great Lakes" in 2013 for her work at Girl and the Goat. She has made a number of appearances on Top Chef since her win, both as a guest judge on subsequent seasons and as a participant in Top Chef Duels. In 2017, Izard competed in the Food Network series Iron Chef Gauntlet, where she overall defeated chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, and Masaharu Morimoto to obtain the title of Iron Chef.

He is best known for Aureole, his flagship restaurant in New York City, which has earned 13 Michelin stars and two James Beard awards. Considered a “pioneer of progressive American cooking,” Palmer has received over 20 Michelin stars and consults 15 F&B outlets through the Charlie Palmer Collective.
Sang Yoon is a South Korean born-American restaurateur, chef and the owner of the Father's Office gastropub, chef and owner of Lukshon Restaurant, and the chef/partner in Two Birds One Stone. Chef Yoon was a contestant on Bravo Network's Top Chef Masters Season 5.
David Kinch is an American chef and restaurateur. He owned and operated Manresa, a restaurant in Los Gatos, California, which was awarded three Michelin stars in 2016. Kinch's California cuisine has strong French, Catalan and Japanese influences. Kinch opened a second restaurant in Los Gatos, called The Bywater, on January 12, 2016.
Tanya Holland is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, podcast host, writer, and cookbook author. She is known as an expert of soul food. Holland is an alumna of Bravo TV's Top Chef, where she competed on the 15th season. She was the owner of Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland, California, which received national recognition and multiple Michelin Bib Gourmand awards.
Melissa Perello is an American chef, she is best known for holding a Michelin star at her restaurant Frances in San Francisco. She had previously won a star at restaurant Fifth Floor, and has won awards from both Chronicles and Food & Wine magazines.

Suzette Gresham, also known as Suzette Gresham-Tognetti, is an American chef. She holds two Michelin stars at her restaurant Acquerello in San Francisco, California.
