Top Chef: Chicago is the fourth season of the American reality television series Top Chef . It was first filmed in Chicago, Illinois before concluding in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The season premiered on Bravo on March 12, 2008, and ended on June 18, 2008. [1] In the season finale, Stephanie Izard was declared the winner over runners-up Lisa Fernandes and Richard Blais. [2] Izard was also voted Fan Favorite. [3]

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs had to create a signature deep dish pizza and serve it to Rocco DiSpirito and Padma Lakshmi. Immunity from elimination was not awarded to the winners. Instead, the teams were separated into two groups, based on their performances, for the upcoming Elimination Challenge.

Elimination Challenge: The winners of the Quickfire cooked head-to-head against the losers, using one dish from a list of classic dishes. The winners drew numbered knives and chose one of the losers as their opponent. The opponent then selected which dish the pair would each prepare. Both dishes were served to the judges simultaneously, with decisions to follow immediately. Anthony Bourdain guest judges. The name of the winning chef for each dish is indicated below in italics.

Quickfire Challenge: Each chef created a dish using no more than five ingredients (excluding pantry freebies salt, pepper, sugar, olive oil and canola oil), either purchased at Chicago's Green City Market or drawn from the Top Chef pantry; they had 30 minutes cooking time. The winner received immunity from elimination.

Elimination Challenge: Five teams of three were selected by drawing knives, each assigned a specific animal: bear, gorilla, lion, penguin, or vulture. The teams prepared a series of appetizers based on their animal's diet for 200 guests at the Lincoln Park Zoo. They were given 30 minutes and $500 to shop at the Whole Foods Market, three hours to prep in the Top Chef kitchen, and one hour to set up on-site. Wylie Dufresne guest judges.

Quickfire Challenge: Each chef had to create an upscale taco. In addition to receiving immunity, the winner's dish was put on the menu of Rick Bayless' restaurant Topolobampo.

Elimination Challenge: Divided into two teams of seven, the chefs catered a Chicago neighborhood's annual block party. The teams were required only to use ingredients they could get from the block's residents.

Quickfire Challenge: Each chef created a vegetable platter using the various vegetables provided and the items from the entire Top Chef pantry. The chefs had to utilize at least three culinary techniques in their dishes. The winner received immunity from elimination.

  • Winner: Dale (Daikon Marinated in Tobanjan, Tournée of Avocado & Cucumber)

Elimination Challenge: The chefs drew knives to pair up into six teams of two. As the winner of the Quickfire, Dale could choose which pair to join to form a group of three. Then, they created a 6-course meal; the chefs' favorite films inspired each dish. The guest judges at the dinner included film critic Richard Roeper, chef Daniel Boulud, and actress Aisha Tyler.

485"The Elements"April 9, 2008 (2008-04-09)

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs participated in a comparison taste test. For every comparison, each chef was blindfolded and tasted two variations of a certain food, one of which was of a lesser quality than the other. The chefs were scored for each high-end ingredient they correctly identified. The winner received immunity from elimination. Chef Ming Tsai guest judges.

Elimination Challenge: The chefs were split into four groups of three, based on the classical elements: earth, water, fire, and air. Each team had to create a meal based on their assigned element for 80 people of Chicago's Celebrity Chef-Meals on Wheels Fundraiser, held at the old Marshall Field & Co. Building. Survey cards were filled out by the patrons of the dinner that evening and used as part of the judging process. The winner received a five-day trip for two to Italy.

Quickfire Challenge: Each contestant was allowed to taste three beers from several different brands before selecting one. Each contestant was then challenged to create a dish that paired well with their beer choice. The winner received immunity from elimination. Chicago chef Koren Grieveson from the restaurant Avec guest judged the challenge.

Elimination Challenge: The contestants were asked to create meals for a tailgating party at Soldier Field prior to a Chicago Bears football game (Week 6 game versus the Minnesota Vikings). The chefs were given preparation time at the Top Chef kitchen and at the field, before serving, on grills. The top and bottom three dishes were selected from the crowd participating in the tailgating party, including former Bears players Richard Dent, Gale Sayers and William "The Refrigerator" Perry. The final decision of the winner and eliminated chef was left to the judges. The winner received a Weber Summit 650 Gas Grill and a Chicago Bears jersey labeled "Top Chef". Chef Paul Kahan guest judges.

507"Improv"April 23, 2008 (2008-04-23)

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs made desserts for the judges. In addition to receiving immunity from elimination, the winner had their Quickfire recipe placed in the Top Chef cookbook.

  • Winner: Richard (Banana Scallops with Banana Guacamole & Chocolate Ice Cream)

Elimination Challenge: The chefs attended a performance of the improvisational comedy troupe, The Second City. During the performance, the Second City actors obtained various combinations of colors, emotions, and ingredients from the audience, creating five descriptions for meals that the chefs had to prepare. The chefs freely split into teams and selected the order for the courses. They discovered they could not use electric mixers or food processors during the challenge since they had been removed from the Top Chef kitchen. While cooking, the chefs also found out that, while an elaborate table was set up in the kitchen, they would serve their meals at the Top Chef house. They only had 20 minutes to move to the house following this announcement. Each member of the winning team received $2,500 worth of Calphalon kitchenware. Pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini guest judges.

Quickfire Challenge: Each chef had to create an entrée in only 15 minutes, using Uncle Ben's Rice as a primary ingredient. The winner received immunity from elimination.

  • Winner: Antonia (Rice Salad with Skirt Steak, Arugula, Red Onions & Cherry Tomatoes)

Elimination Challenge: The contestants were told to make a healthy, simple, and flavorful meal for a family of four, using only $10. Meal preparation would take place at the Washburn Culinary Institute. At the institute, each chef was paired with a child from the Common Threads program who participated in preparing the dish and was also responsible for explaining the dish to fellow children from the program during the tasting. chef, cookbook author and restaurateur Art Smith, founder of the Common Threads program, was the episode's guest judge.

529"Wedding Wars"May 7, 2008 (2008-05-07)

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs drew knives to split into two teams of four. The chefs competed in a mise en place relay race in these teams. One person from each team had to perform a basic kitchen task, such as supreming oranges and filleting fish, and then receive approval from Tom Colicchio before the next person on their team could begin the next task. The first team to complete all the tasks won. From this point on, the winners of the Quickfire Challenge no longer received immunity from elimination.

Elimination Challenge: Instead of the typical "Restaurant Wars" challenge, the teams were challenged to "Wedding Wars". In the same teams used for the Quickfire, the chefs catered a 250-guest wedding (125 guests to be served per team) for a couple who owned a restaurant and wedding facility. Each team prepared a different menu; one team was responsible for meeting the bride's requests, while the other was for the groom. Team Fork, as the winner of the Quickfire, decided to cater for the bride. The teams were given 30 minutes to discuss the menu with the bride or groom, 30 minutes to plan, $3,000 to shop at a large food warehouse and $2,000 at Whole Foods Market, and 14 hours (through the night) of preparation time in the Top Chef kitchen, followed by additional preparation time at the banquet. Chicago-based pastry chef, cookbook author, and television personality Gale Gand appeared as a guest judge. The winner received a $2,000 gift certificate to Crate & Barrel.

5310"Serve and Protect"May 14, 2008 (2008-05-14)

Quickfire Challenge: The chefs were given 45 minutes to create a modern take on a salad using fresh produce and items from the Top Chef pantry. Top Chef: Los Angeles finalist Sam Talbot guest judges.

  • Winner: Spike ("Sensual Beef Salad" with Pineapple, Radish, Cucumber & Skirt Steak)

Elimination Challenge: The chefs were challenged to create a healthy, delicious, and filling box lunch meal for the members of the Chicago Police Academy. The meal had to contain at least one ingredient from each of the following categories: whole grain, lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. Any final preparation steps (such as microwaving) had to be completed by the diners. As the Quickfire winner, Spike was given ten additional minutes to shop and his first choice of each of the four required ingredients, which the other chefs, consequently, were not permitted to use. He chose bread, chicken, tomato, and lettuce as his exclusive ingredients. The winner received a bottle of wine from a Napa Valley winery and a trip to their vineyards.

5411"Restaurant Wars"May 21, 2008 (2008-05-21)

Quickfire Challenge: Taking turns, each chef spent the same amount of time operating the egg station during the busy breakfast hours at Lou Mitchell's Restaurant and Bakery. The chef's performance would be judged by both Tom Colicchio and the restaurant's owner, Heleen Thanas, based on who she'd be most likely to hire.

  • Winner: Antonia

Elimination Challenge: For the standard "Restaurant Wars" challenge, the chefs had to open up a restaurant in teams of three for a dinner service, consisting of three courses with two selections each for approximately 35 guests the next day. The winner would be judged based on both the normal judges and comment cards filled out by the patrons. Each team had $1,500 to spend on food and $5,000 from Pier 1 Imports for decor. Antonia could select her teammates for the challenge as the Quickfire winner. One chef from each team was required to assist in front-of-house duties along with additional waitstaff. Midway through the challenge, each team's executive chef was allowed to select one additional assisting chef from the four most recently eliminated chefs: Andrew, Jennifer, Mark, and Nikki. Antonia chose Nikki and Dale chose Jennifer. The winner received a trip for two to Barcelona, Spain, including a guided wine tour. Chefs Anthony Bourdain and José Andrés guest judge.

Quickfire Challenge: At a meat packing warehouse, each chef was given twenty minutes to butcher and clean seven "tomahawk chops" from an aged side of beef. Then, at the Top Chef kitchen, they were given an additional thirty minutes to prepare two of the chops to the guest judge's preference: medium-rare.

Elimination Challenge: Each chef had to create an appetizer and entrée, in addition to working the line at Rick Tramonto's Steak & Seafood restaurant. As the Quickfire winner, Spike was able to select two proteins for his dishes, preventing the other chefs from using those proteins. He chose frozen scallops for his appetizer and tomahawk chops for his entrée. The winner received a cookbook by Rick Tramonto and a suite of GE Monogram appliances. Previous Top Chef winners Harold Dieterle, Ilan Hall, and Hung Huynh are in attendance.

Quickfire Challenge: Six months after the previous episode in Chicago, the chefs arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each chef had to make frituras (fritters) using plantains as the primary ingredient.

  • Winner: Stephanie (Tostones with Seared Tuna; Pork & Shrimp Fritter with Brown Butter, Lime & Basil Sauce)

Elimination Challenge: The chefs were asked to prepare three dishes each for a reception held at La Fortaleza, the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico. Each chef was given a pig to butcher and had to use at least two different parts of it in two of their dishes. The last four previously eliminated chefs were returned as sous chefs to assist the competitors. As the Quickfire winner, Stephanie selected which sous chef would work with each contestant. She assigned Spike to Richard, Nikki to Antonia, Andrew to Lisa, and Dale to herself. While the chefs butchered the pig, the sous chefs shopped for ingredients at a local market. Then, the chefs had two hours of prep time the day before the reception, followed by five hours of cooking time just before the reception. The winner received a 2009 Toyota Corolla S. Wilo Benet guest judge, and First Lady of Puerto Rico Luisa Acevedo Vilá is in attendance.

Elimination Challenge: For their final challenge, each chef was asked to create a four-course meal for nine guests, consisting of a fish course, a poultry course, a red meat course, and a dessert, in that order. Before they started to cook, the chefs had to select one of three famous New York chefs to act as their sous chef for the challenge. Additionally, each famous chef came paired with an array of proteins for the contestant to use in their first three dishes. The order for picking the sous chefs and proteins was determined by the number of previous elimination round wins, with ties broken by knife pulling. Stephanie chose celebrity chef, author, and restaurateur Eric Ripert, of Le Bernardin. Richard chose chef and restaurateur Dan Barber of Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Lisa chose April Bloomfield, also a chef and restaurateur, from The Spotted Pig. On the second and final day of cooking, the chefs had to finish the meal preparation alone.

Bravo cited negative viewer reaction to the Season 2 chefs' attitudes and overall behavior as the reason why no reunion episode was filmed. In the season finale, Ilan Hall was declared the winner over runner-up Marcel Vigneron. Sam Talbot was voted Fan Favorite.

Top Chef: Miami is the third season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first filmed in Miami, Florida, before concluding in Aspen, Colorado. The season was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Series, and garnered the Emmy Award for Best Editing in the category. Season 3 premiered on June 13, 2007 and ended on October 10, 2007. Padma Lakshmi returned with Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, and new judge Ted Allen, who switched off with Simmons throughout the season. Top Chef: San Francisco contestant Lee Anne Wong was brought in as a food consultant and assisted in planning the challenges. Production took place in April and May 2007 in Miami Beach, Florida, with production activity centered at the Fontainebleau Hotel. Stephanie Izard is an American chef and television personality best known as the first female chef to win Bravo's Top Chef, taking the title during its fourth season. She is the co-owner and executive chef of three award-winning Chicago restaurants, Girl and the Goat, Little Goat, and Duck Duck Goat, and opened her first restaurant, Scylla as chef-owner at the age of 27. Izard received a James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Chef: Great Lakes" in 2013 for her work at Girl and the Goat. She has made a number of appearances on Top Chef since her win, both as a guest judge on subsequent seasons and as a participant in Top Chef Duels. In 2017, Izard competed in the Food Network series Iron Chef Gauntlet, where she overall defeated chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, and Masaharu Morimoto to obtain the title of Iron Chef.

Top Chef: New York is the fifth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first filmed in New York City, New York, before concluding in New Orleans, Louisiana. The season premiered on Bravo on November 12, 2008, and ended on March 4, 2009. In the season finale, Hosea Rosenberg was declared the winner over runners-up Stefan Richter and Carla Hall. Fabio Viviani was voted Fan Favorite.

Top Chef Junior is an American reality competition television series that serves as a spin-off of the popular Top Chef series. Ordered in 2008 for an eight-episode run on Bravo, the show had never aired, nor is it known if any episodes were produced at that time. However, nine years later, Top Chef Junior was mentioned as the marquee program for Universal Kids, an NBCUniversal-owned children's channel launched on September 9, 2017. Season 1 consisted of 14 episodes and feature 12 young chefs, aged 9–14. The winner receives $50,000 and the title of Top Chef Junior. The show is hosted by actress Vanessa Lachey, with Top Chef Masters and Top Chef Duels host Curtis Stone serving as its head judge. Top Chef Junior premiered on October 13, 2017. In November 2017 Top Chef Junior was renewed for a 2nd season, which premiered on September 8, 2018. It consists of 12 finalist chefs aged 9–14.

<i>Top Chef: Las Vegas</i> Season 6 of American television series

Top Chef: Las Vegas is the sixth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, before concluding in Napa, California. The season premiered on August 19, 2009, and ended on December 16, 2009. Beginning with this season, the prize money awarded to the winner was increased from US$100,000 to $125,000. In the season finale, Michael Voltaggio was declared the winner over runners-up Bryan Voltaggio and Kevin Gillespie. Gillespie was voted Fan Favorite. In 2010, Top Chef: Las Vegas received the Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality Competition Program".

<i>Top Chef: D.C.</i> Season 7 of American television series

Top Chef: D.C. is the seventh season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was initially filmed in Washington, D.C. before concluding in Singapore, the series' first international venue. It premiered on June 16, 2010, and concluded on September 22, 2010. In the season finale, Kevin Sbraga was declared the winner over runners-up Angelo Sosa and Ed Cotton. Tiffany Derry was voted Fan Favorite.

<i>Top Chef: All-Stars</i> Season 8 of American television series

Top Chef: All-Stars is the eighth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was first filmed in New York City before concluding in The Bahamas. All-Stars consisted of chefs from the previous seven seasons who did not win the title of Top Chef. It premiered on December 1, 2010, and concluded on April 6, 2011. The cast was announced during the Top Chef: D.C. reunion special on September 22, 2010. The prize money awarded to the winner of the season was US$200,000. In the season finale, Top Chef: Chicago runner-up Richard Blais was declared the winner over Top Chef: Las Vegas contestant Mike Isabella. Top Chef: New York runner-up Carla Hall was voted Fan Favorite.

<i>Top Chef: Texas</i> Season 9 of American television series

Top Chef: Texas is the ninth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was filmed in various cities in Texas, including San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin, before moving on to Whistler, British Columbia for the finale. The season premiered on November 2, 2011. This season of Top Chef featured a much larger number of contestants than any previous season, with 29 chefs. Top Chef: Texas also introduced a new side competition to the series; in addition to the Quickfire and Elimination Challenges featured in televised episodes, the Last Chance Kitchen competition allowed eliminated contestants to compete head-to-head in a series of webisodes, with the winner eventually returning to the main competition. In the season finale, Paul Qui was declared the winner over runner-up Sarah Grueneberg. Chris Crary was voted Fan Favorite.

<i>Top Chef: Seattle</i> Season 10 of American television series

Top Chef: Seattle is the tenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season premiered on November 7, 2012. The competition was initially filmed in Seattle, Washington before moving to Juneau, Alaska for three episodes, and then concluding in Los Angeles, California. Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen, the web series introduced in the previous season which puts the eliminated contestants against each other in head-to-head challenges to battle for a chance to re-enter the main competition, also returned. The winner continued to compete in the season finale. In addition, viewers could vote each week for chefs eliminated from the Last Chance Kitchen to move on in the "Save a Chef" competition. The winner of the final vote was "saved", and earned a spot in the final round of the Last Chance Kitchen. In the season finale, Kristen Kish was declared the winner over runner-up Brooke Williamson. Sheldon Simeon was voted Fan Favorite.

The third season of the Canadian reality competition show Top Chef Canada was broadcast on Food Network in Canada. It is a Canadian spin-off of Bravo's hit show Top Chef.

<i>Top Chef: New Orleans</i> Season 11 of American television series

Top Chef: New Orleans is the eleventh season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was announced on May 10, 2013. Filming took place from early May through late July, beginning in New Orleans, Louisiana and concluding in Maui. The season premiered on October 2, 2013. State and local tourism offices in Louisiana sponsored the season, paying a total of $375,000. The state contribution came from a recovery fund established by BP after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. In addition to the return of the Last Chance Kitchen, Bravo launched a new web series called Padma's Picks. Debuting on August 14, 2013, the competition, presided over by host Padma Lakshmi, featured ten New Orleans chefs competing for the chance to join the official lineup of contestants and represent the city.

<i>Top Chef: Boston</i> Season 12 of American television series

Top Chef: Boston is the twelfth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was formally announced on August 20, 2014, and premiered on October 15, 2014. Filming for Season 12 took place from May through June 2014 in locations around Boston, Massachusetts, concluding with a finale in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and the surrounding area. Top Chef: Chicago finalist and Top Chef: All-Stars winner Richard Blais debuted as a recurring judge, joining Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, Hugh Acheson, and host Padma Lakshmi on the judging panel. Last Chance Kitchen also returned for its fourth season, beginning with a two-part redemption mid-season and continuing until the first part of the finale. In the season finale, Mei Lin was declared the winner over runner-up Gregory Gourdet. Unlike previous seasons, no Fan Favorite vote was held.

<i>Top Chef: California</i> Season 13 of American television series

Top Chef: California is the thirteenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was announced by Bravo on April 14, 2015. Similar to Top Chef: Texas, filming took place in several locations across California, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Oakland, and the greater Palm Springs area, concluding with a finale in Las Vegas, Nevada. Top Chef: California had a two-night premiere on December 2–3, 2015. Host Padma Lakshmi and head judge Tom Colicchio returned, alongside judges Gail Simmons, Emeril Lagasse, and Richard Blais, among others. The companion web series, Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen, also returned, premiering immediately following the second part of the season premiere on December 3, 2015. In the season finale, Jeremy Ford was declared the winner over runner-up Amar Santana. Isaac Toups was voted Fan Favorite.

<i>Top Chef: Charleston</i> Season 14 of American television series

Top Chef: Charleston is the fourteenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season was announced by Bravo on October 13, 2016, which premiered on December 1, 2016, and concluded on March 2, 2017. Filming initially took place in Charleston, South Carolina, beginning in May 2016, while the season's final episodes were filmed in areas across Mexico, including Guadalajara and the Yucatán Peninsula. Top Chef: Charleston featured eight new contestants competing against eight returning contestants from previous seasons. MasterChef and Top Chef Masters alumnus Graham Elliot debuted as a recurring judge, alongside returning judges Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and Gail Simmons. In the season finale, Top Chef: Seattle runner-up Brooke Williamson was declared the winner over Top Chef: New Orleans finalist Shirley Chung. Top Chef: Seattle finalist Sheldon Simeon was voted Fan Favorite, his second Fan Favorite win.

Top Chef: Colorado is the fifteenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. The season's details and cast were revealed on October 12, 2017. The show was filmed in various cities across Colorado, including Denver, Boulder, Telluride, and Aspen. The season premiered on December 7, 2017, and concluded on March 8, 2018. Last Chance Kitchen premiered on November 30, 2017. In the season finale, Joseph "Joe" Flamm was declared the winner over runner-up Adrienne Cheatham. Fatima Ali was voted Fan Favorite.

<i>Top Chef: Kentucky</i> Season 16 of American television series

Top Chef: Kentucky is the sixteenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. Initial details about the season and its cast were revealed on October 18, 2018. The competition was filmed at various locations in Kentucky, including Louisville, Lexington, and Lake Cumberland. The season finale took place in Macau. Padma Lakshmi returned as host, with Tom Colicchio, Graham Elliot, and Nilou Motamed forming the judging panel. Due to being on maternity leave for the majority of filming, Top Chef regular Gail Simmons did not appear as one of the main judges for the season. Top Chef: Kentucky premiered on December 6, 2018, and concluded on March 14, 2019. In the season finale, Kelsey Barnard Clark was declared the winner over runner-up Sara Bradley. Barnard Clark was also voted Fan Favorite.

The eighth season of the Canadian reality competition show Top Chef Canada was broadcast on Food Network in Canada. It is the Canadian spin-off of Bravo's hit show Top Chef. The program takes place in Toronto, and is hosted by Eden Grinshpan. Season eight features 12 chefs of various backgrounds considered to be the next generation of culinary stars in Canada. The final challenge was held at the historic Elora Mill in Elora, Ontario, with shopping done at the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in St. Jacobs, Ontario.

<i>Top Chef: Houston</i> Season 19 of American television series

Top Chef: Houston is the nineteenth season of the American reality television series Top Chef. It was first announced by Bravo and NBCUniversal on September 21, 2021. The competition was filmed in Houston, Texas, which was not featured during the series' previous Texas-themed season, and Galveston Island. The season finale took place in Tucson, Arizona. The winner received US$250,000.
