I/O is a Japanese science fiction visual novel produced by Regista. It was released by GN Software for the PlayStation 2 on January 26, 2006 and by Asgard for Microsoft Windows on August 29, 2008 under the title I/O Revision II.
I/O is a mystery adventure visual novel in which the player takes the role of one of four characters; depending on who they choose in the beginning of the game, they experience different scenarios. At certain points throughout the game, the player needs to select one of two choices in order to move the plot forward. [1] In order to reveal the truth behind the game's story, the player needs to clear all four routes. [2]
The game is set in Tokyo in 2032, and follows four protagonists: Hinata Aoi (葵 日向, Aoi Hinata), a lethargic high school student who is investigating the disappearance of his twin sister Mutsuki (夢月); Ishtar (イシュタル, Ishutaru), a woman who is the leader of the hacking group Criminal; a second Ishtar, who is searching for something important; and a man who goes by the nickname "{HE}", who does not have any friends, and who is opposing an organization. Among other characters are the Criminal members Mika Ayase (綾瀬 みか, Ayase Mika), Kousuke Miyata (宮田 浩介, Miyata Kousuke), and twin sisters Mayumi (真佑実) and Masami Shinozuka (篠塚 真佐実, Shinozuka Masami). The player also encounters Hinata's childhood friend Sakuya Kawahara (川原 朔夜, Kawahara Sakuya). [3]
I/O was developed by Regista, [1] and was directed and written by Takumi Nakazawa, based on an original concept by Nakazawa and Romeo Tanaka, and features character designs by Soyosoyo. [3] The game was inspired by a Mesopotamian poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh . It features full voice acting for all characters, including the protagonists. [1]
The game was announced in March 2005, [4] and originally had a planned release window of the third or fourth quarter of 2005; [1] it was showcased at Sega's booth at Tokyo Game Show 2005 in September, [5] and was eventually released by GN Software for PlayStation 2 on January 26, 2006, in both a standard and a limited edition. [1] [2] A Microsoft Windows version, titled I/O Revision II, was released by Asgard on August 29, 2008. [6] The game's soundtrack album, I/O Perfect Audiotracks, and the drama CD I/O Overbrowse Damsel, were both released by Five Records on February 24, 2006. [7] [8]
Writers for the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu appreciated how new developments occur after clearing each of the game's scenarios, and found that the game's worldview was consistent despite referencing various conflicting texts, such as the Bible and the Epic of Gilgamesh. They also felt that the game's use of themes such as virtual and real, human life and ontology gave the game a "cyber-science fiction youth" feeling. [2]
Gilgamesh was a hero in ancient Mesopotamian mythology and the protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem written in Akkadian during the late 2nd millennium BC. He was possibly a historical king of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk, who was posthumously deified. His rule probably would have taken place sometime in the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period, c. 2900 – 2350 BC, though he became a major figure in Sumerian legend during the Third Dynasty of Ur.
Xenosaga is a role-playing video game series developed by Monolith Soft and primarily published by Namco. Forming part of the wider Xeno metaseries, Xenosaga is set in a science fiction universe and follows a group of characters as they face both a hostile alien race called the Gnosis and human factions fighting for control of the Zohar, an artifact connected to a god-like energy called U-DO. Gameplay across the series is similar, with the characters being guided through a linear narrative and fighting enemies using a turn-based combat system. The party fights both on foot and in a variety of mechs.

The Tower of Druaga is a 1984 arcade action role-playing maze game developed and published in Japan by Namco. Controlling the golden-armored knight Gilgamesh, the player is tasked with scaling 60 floors of the titular tower in an effort to rescue the maiden Ki from Druaga, a demon with eight arms and four legs, who plans to use an artifact known as the Blue Crystal Rod to enslave all of mankind. It ran on the Namco Super Pac-Man arcade hardware, modified with a horizontal-scrolling video system used in Mappy.

The Return of Ishtar is an action role-playing arcade video game released by Namco in 1986. It runs on Namco System 86 hardware and is the sequel to The Tower of Druaga, which was released two years earlier. The game's story directly starts after the first game, where Ki and Gil must venture down in the Tower of Druaga and escape it. It is the second game in the company's Babylonian Castle Saga series, and was later ported to the MSX, NEC PC-8801, FM-7, and Sharp X68000 platforms. The Return of Ishtar was included in the compilation game Namco Museum Volume 4 for the PlayStation, which is also the first time the game had been released overseas.
Kuon is a 2004 survival horror video game developed by FromSoftware for the PlayStation 2. Published by FromSoftware in Japan, it was released in North America by Agetec, and in Europe by Nobilis and Indie Games Productions in 2006. The narrative takes place in Japan's Heian period, and follows the actions of three protagonists during an outbreak of monsters at Fujiwara Manor in Kyoto; Utsuki, daughter of the onmyōji Ashiya Doman, Doman's apprentice Sakuya, and the veteran onmyōji Abe no Seimei. Gameplay has the different characters exploring the grounds and buildings of Fujiwara Manor, solving puzzles and fighting off hostile monsters.
Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is a visual novel video game developed by KID. It is the second entry in the Infinity series; it is preceded by Never 7: The End of Infinity, and followed by Remember 11: The Age of Infinity, the spin-off 12Riven: The Psi-Climinal of Integral, and the reboot Code_18. It was originally released in Japan on August 29, 2002, for the PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast, and was later ported to Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Portable, Android, and iOS. A localization of the Microsoft Windows version was released by Hirameki International in North America in 2005.
The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigi no Dungeon is a roguelike video game developed by Arika, Matrix Software, and Chunsoft, published in 2004 in Japan by Arika and in North America by Namco Hometek exclusively for the PlayStation 2. H2O: Footprints in the Sand is a Japanese adult visual novel by Makura that was released on June 23, 2006 for Windows as a DVD; a version playable on the PlayStation 2 under the title H2O + followed on April 24, 2008 with adult content removed and added scenarios and graphics not seen in the original release. H2O is Makura's first game; a sequel named Root After and Another was later produced in October 2007. The gameplay in H2O follows a plot line that offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the three female main characters. There are two modes of gameplay, the Blindness Effect and Normal Effect, where the former plays on the fact that the protagonist is blind, and the latter mode removes the added element of gameplay the Blindness Effect has. The story is broken into three parts: the original introduction and meeting, following by a separation and reunion, and finally ending with the protagonist choosing one of the girls and spending the rest of the game with her.
Regista is a Japanese visual novel publishing company founded in 2001 by Takumi Nakazawa. The company name comes from an Italian word meaning film director, control tower, producer, and game maker. The company mainly ports adult game to the consumer port PlayStation 2. In 2006, Regista published their first original game named I/O by GN Software, and in 2007 published their second original game called Myself ; Yourself by Yeti.
The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk and its sequel, The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk, is a Japanese anime television series, created by Gonzo, and is an animated reboot/continuation of Namco's Babylonian Castle Saga video game franchise which began as an arcade game, The Tower of Druaga, originally released in 1984. This series is amongst the first to be officially broadcast on the internet by Gonzo simultaneously in Japanese and subtitled in English on YouTube, and BOST TV.
The Xenosaga (ゼノサーガ) series is a series of science fiction role-playing video games developed by Monolith Soft and published by Namco Bandai on the PlayStation 2. The series began with the 2002 release of Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht, which was followed in 2004 by Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse and in 2006 by Episode III: Also sprach Zarathustra. The music of Xenosaga includes the soundtracks to all three chapters, as well as the music for its spin-off media. These include Xenosaga Freaks, a set of minigames set between the first two chapters, Xenosaga I & II, a Nintendo DS remake of the first two chapters, and Xenosaga: The Animation, an anime series covering the events of the first game. Episode I was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, Episode II was split between Yuki Kajiura, Shinji Hosoe, and Ayako Saso, and Episode III was composed by Kajiura alone. Xenosaga Freaks reused some of the music of Episode I by Mitsuda while also including new work by Shinji Hosoe, Ayako Saso, Masashi Yano, Keiichi Okabe, Satoru Kōsaki, and Hiroshi Okubo, while Xenosaga I & II and Xenosaga: The Animation used new pieces composed by Kousuke Yamashita.

Z/X, also known as Z/X Zillions of enemy X, is a collectible card game produced by Nippon Ichi Software and Broccoli. It is marketed as the first "free" collectible card game, with a free deck offered to players at card shops and events in Japan. A PlayStation 3 game titled Z/X Zillions of enemy X: Zekkai no Crusade, developed by Nippon Ichi Software and produced by Broccoli was released in Japan on May 23, 2013. A manga adaptation written by Broccoli with art by Karegashi Tsuchiya began serialization in Shueisha's V Jump from September 2012. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation titled Z/X Ignition aired between January 9, 2014 and March 27, 2014.
Infinity is a series of visual novel video games mainly developed by KID. The first game in the series, Never 7: The End of Infinity, was originally released as Infinity for PlayStation in 2000, and was later ported to other platforms. Since then, four more games have been developed, as well as a remake of the second game. The first three games were directed by Takumi Nakazawa, and the first four were planned and written by Kotaro Uchikoshi and composed for by Takeshi Abo. The fifth was written by the otome writing group Run & Gun, and featured sound production by the band Milktub. Alongside Memories Off, Infinity was KID's flagship series.
Ensemble Stars! is a Japanese game franchise developed by Cacalia Studio and published by Happy Elements K.K., the Japanese division of the Chinese company Happy Elements. It is a spin-off of the 2012 game Ensemble Girls! It was first released as a life simulation and gacha game on Google Play on April 28, 2015, and on the App Store on May 1, 2015.
