Background and release

Speaking about the album, Walker stated, “’I Am’ is a culmination of me trying to figure out who I am for the last four years. This record is a snapshot of what’s been going on in my life, and what’s been happening around me – what’s made me happy or sad, ecstatic or miserable.” He then declared, “I will die for these songs. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve felt like that. You’ve got to ignore what everyone else wants from you, and you’ve got to back yourself.” [3]

Walker officially announced the album on 3 November 2023. [3] The album was officially released on 20 September 2024, with an album launch tour in the United Kingdom shortly after. [4]

Reviewing the album for Clash , Emma Harrison calls it "Confessional, visceral and emotional", and serves as "a fine follow up to ‘What a Time to Be Alive’ and in many respects transcends it, thanks to the sophisticated and impassioned songwriting and delivery." [5] Writing for The Upcoming, Talitha Stowell admits that "The different sounds may be jarring for some and thrilling for others, but they certainly hold their own as individual tracks," and states that "'I Am' is a solid album, with Tom Walker diving deeper into himself than ever before and experimenting with sound."
