Ian Patrick Midlane (born 1 February 1976) is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Al Haskey on the BBC soap opera Doctors . For his performance as Al, he won the award for Best Comedy Performance at the 2018 British Soap Awards.

Life and career

Ian Patrick Midlane was born on 1 February 1976 in Bedford. [1] [2] He is in a relationship with fellow actress Caoimhe Farren. [3]

In 2004, Midlane made his television debut in an episode of the ITV series The Last Detective as a fire officer. [4] He then appeared in "Revenge of the Slitheen", a two part episode of the CBBC series The Sarah Jane Adventures . [5] In 2011, Midlane made his film debut in Swinging with the Finkels . [6] In 2012, Midlane began portraying the role of Al Haskey in the BBC soap opera Doctors . [4] Before this, he appeared in an episode of Doctors in 2005, in the role of Brian Flannery. In 2018, he appeared in the film The Last Witness . [7] Later that year, he won the award for Best Comedy Performance at the British Soap Awards. [8] Midlane has also written three episodes of Doctors. [9]

Howard Bellamy (<i>Doctors</i>) Fictional character from Doctors

Howard Bellamy is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Ian Kelsey. Howard first appeared on 28 May 2012, where he is introduced as the practice manager of the fictional Mill Health Centre. Kelsey was cast in the soap following the departure of Julia Parsons, the practice manager prior to Howard. He is an ex-army captain, and producers deliberately made his personality different to Julia's. Howard was based on a real person since producers had heard of a situation where somebody quit the army to become the practice manager of a doctor's surgery. Kelsey spoke to a real-life practice manager to aid his accuracy in the role.

His storylines in the programme have included being accused of stalking Jas Khella, his friendship with colleague Jimmi Clay, dealing with his mother's dementia, his tumultuous relationships and being attacked by a patient.

The 2018 British Soap Awards honoured the best in British soap operas throughout 2017 and 2018. The ceremony was held on 2 June 2018 at the Hackney Empire theatre in Hackney, London, and was broadcast live for the first time on ITV and STV. The publicly voted categories were announced on 10 April 2018, with the vote opening that same day. This included a longlist for the Best Actress and Actor awards. The shortlist, including panel nominations, was released on 1 May 2018.
