Ian Peters (born 1941) is a former New Zealand politician of the National and New Zealand First parties.
Peters was born in Kawakawa in 1941. He is a brother of NZ First MP,leader and minister,Winston Peters,and former NZ First MP Jim Peters.
Another brother,Ron Peters,stood for New Zealand First in Hobson in 1993,coming third;and for Northland in 1996,coming second. [1]

He represented the Tongariro electorate in Parliament from 1990 to 1993,when he was defeated by Mark Burton. He stood unsuccessfully against Burton for the replacement seat of Taupo in 1996,for the New Zealand First party.
Since leaving politics,he has been a senior staffer at Te Puni Kōkiri in Whangarei. [2]

Peters served as the 13th deputy prime minister of New Zealand from 1996 to 1998 and 2017 to 2020,the minister of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2008 and 2017 to 2020,and the treasurer of New Zealand from 1996 to 1998. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1979 to 1981,1984 to 2008 and 2011 to 2020.
New Zealand First,commonly abbreviated to NZ First,is a nationalist and populist political party in New Zealand. The party formed in July 1993 following the resignation on 19 March 1993 of its leader and founder,Winston Peters,from the then-governing National Party. Peters had been the sitting Member of Parliament for Tauranga since 1984 and would use the electorate as the base for New Zealand First until consecutive defeats by National Party candidates in 2005 and 2008. His party has formed coalition governments with both major political parties in New Zealand:first with the National Party from 1996 to 1998 and then with the Labour Party from 2005 to 2008 and from 2017 to 2020. Peters has served on two occasions as deputy prime minister.

As Peters was already a list MP for his party,this allowed New Zealand First an additional list member,Ria Bond,to join parliament.

During his time as an opposition MP,King's roles included membership of the Justice,Māori Affairs,and Transport and Infrastructure Select Committees,and National's spokesperson for Regional Development,Rural Communities,and Transport. While in parliament he promoted a bill to create a new offense for "king hits" but it was defeated.
