Ian Rawlings (born 9 March 1959) is an Australian actor. He is best known for his long-running roles in soap operas Sons and Daughters and Neighbours . He also appeared in the short-lived serial The Power, the Passion .

Early life

Ian Rawlings was born on 9 March, 1959, in Whyalla, South Australia. He developed a keen interest in betting on the horses from the age of eight when his printer father Ken and grandad Len first took him to the races in Adelaide.[ citation needed ]

Rawlings initially worked on and off loading trucks at a freight company before his acting career took off.[ citation needed ]

Career

Sons and Daughters

Rawlings started out playing the role of the scheming Wayne Hamilton/Morrell in Sons and Daughters . An original cast member of the show, he continued in the role for the show's entire 1982–1987 run. [1]

Hiatus from acting

When Sons and Daughters suddenly got axed, Rawlings gave up acting and took on a job with the freight company he previously worked at, this time as a salesman. [2] [ better source needed ]

He also ran Chatterley's, a beauty salon in Homebush, Sydney, and undertook courses with the Australian Council of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, with the idea of working in a gym. [3] [ better source needed ]

Neighbours

Two years after switching to sales, Rawlings was offered the role of Philip Martin in Neighbours , which he played from 1992 to 1999 (after having played a brief guest role as Marcus Stone, four months earlier). He briefly reprised this role in episodes commemorating the programme's 20th anniversary in 2005. He made a cameo appearance in the final episode of Neighbours in mid-2022, and again in late 2023, when the series was picked up once again. Before his role Philip Martin, Rawlings had a guest appearance on the show as Marcus Stone.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Rawlings has most recently worked as a bingo host at Werribee Rotary Club in Victoria. [6] [7]

Madge arrives with her marriage in tatters, following a brief but passionate affair with Raymond Philips, her son in prison, and her daughter a runaway teen; she rolled up her sleeves and got a job in The Waterhole to support the family as a single mother. He made his on-screen debut in the soap's first episode, which was broadcast on 18 March 1985. Jim was the patriarch of the Robinson family. Dale departed the show in 1993 after falling out with the producers over pay and his character was killed off on 29 April 1993. Ruth was introduced as Helen Daniels' physiotherapist. She was a divorced single mother, who later established a relationship with Philip Martin, which attracted some opposition from their children. The relationship was later tested by the introduction of Ruth's long lost son, Ben Atkins and his father Geoff Burke. Philip and Ruth marry in 1998, amid a breast cancer scare for Ruth. The Martin family were written out of Neighbours and they departed together on 20 October 1999. Piper reprised her role for the show's 20th anniversary episode, which aired on 27 July 2005.

Rosemary was the first character to discover Jim Robinson's body, following his death. Rosemary has been portrayed as a tough businesswoman who runs the Daniels Corporation. Chambers reprised the role in 2005 and returned for several episodes to help celebrate the show's 20th anniversary. Rosemary returned in 2010 for four episodes to celebrate the 25th anniversary. She made the first of her appearances on 6 July 2010 and the last on 20 August 2010. Following Chambers' death, Rosemary was killed off-screen in 2024.

Jen was introduced at a time when Network Ten was working to relaunch the serial with the addition of new characters and sexier storylines to improve ratings. She made her first on-screen appearance on 14 February 1995. Jen is portrayed as an easy-going, fun loving medical student. Jen embarks upon a relationship with widower Philip Martin, who gives her much-needed stability in her life. Her brother, Luke Handley, was later introduced to the series. Platt believed a storyline in which Jen is asked to donate a kidney to her cousin was a turning point for the character, as it gave her her own identity beyond a supporting role. Jen's final scenes aired on 6 March 1996. Platt later returned to Neighbours as an unrelated character, Olivia Bell, in 2012, 2020 and 2021.
