Ilfracombe railway station was the terminus of the Ilfracombe branch line in north Devon, England. The line was opened as the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe Railway, later becoming part of the London and South Western Railway, and eventually, part of the Southern Railway. It was opened in 1874, and closed in 1970.
The line to Ilfracombe, and the stations on the line, opened on 20 July 1874 as the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe Railway. [1] [2] The local geography in the area proved problematic in siting a railway station in Ilfracombe. Even though the station was built on a hill overlooking the town, it still had a climb of 1-in-40 out of the station southwards. [3] It was 226 miles (364 km) from London Waterloo station, 14 miles 74 chains (24 km) north of Barnstaple Junction, and was located some 225 feet (69 m) above sea level. [4] [5]
A diagram of the station from 1881, shows an island platform with a line on either side, a carriage siding to the west, and the goods shed and turntable to the east side of the station. The no. 1 road on the island platform (furthest west) had an overall roof at the northern end. [6] In 1929, the Southern Railway undertook track improvements and expanded the carriage sidings to the west of the station to seven. [7]
The 1904 Clearing House Handbook of stations listed Ilfracombe as being able to handle all main types of goods traffic (vans, horseboxes, parcels, etc), and was furnished with a crane capable of lifting 10 tonnes (11 tons). [8] The booking office issued 69,000 tickets in 1928, 46,000 in 1930, 31,000 in 1932, 26,000 in 1934 and 24,000 in 1936. [9] In January 1963, the line was transferred from the Southern Region of British Rail, to the Western Region. The turntable was removed from the site in 1964 when dieselisation of the branch using DMUs, made it unnecessary. [10] Apart from a single platform with a run-round loop on the western side of the station, all other track was removed in 1967 when the entire branch was singled. [11]
Goods facilities were removed in 1964, and all associated sidings for goods were removed in 1966. [12] Closure of the entire line between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe was announced in December 1969. British Rail stated that the cost of operating the line came in at £93,000, against a revenue of just £13,300. [13] The station was closed completely on 5 October 1970. [14]
After closure, the station site was sold off and became the location of a factory making filtering equipment. [15]
Upon opening in 1874, the line was worked as a branch by the London South Western Railway, compared to what was envisaged as the main line through Barnstaple to Torrington. The branch saw five down trains (to Ilfracombe), and four up trains (to Barnstaple), which provided a connection to express trains to London Waterloo. [16] The timetable from 1887 shows seven workings northwards from Barnstaple, whilst the returns were nine southbound trains. [17] In the summer of 1891, this had risen to twelve each way, and by 1909, summer services amounted to 17 daily. [18] Of these workings, an average of four per day were through services from London Waterloo, and either one, or two daily from London Paddington. [19]
In the dieselisation era of the early 1960s, some summer Saturday services numbered 17 trains to Ilfracombe. Most were through trains worked from places such as Taunton, Wolverhampton (Low Level), Carmarthen and Paddington. [20] By the late 1960s, only five trains were running and no service ran on a Sunday, even during the summer holiday period. [21]
The London and South Western Railway was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. Originating as the London and Southampton Railway, its network extended to Dorchester and Weymouth, to Salisbury, Exeter and Plymouth, and to Padstow, Ilfracombe and Bude. It developed a network of routes in Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire, including Portsmouth and Reading.

The North Devon Railway connected Barnstaple to the growing railway network in 1854 and as Ilfracombe developed as a watering place, it was obvious a railway connection to the town was needed. The hilly terrain was very difficult, but an Ilfracombe Railway was authorised in 1864 but failed when a major shareholder was unable to respond to a subscription call. After several false starts the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe Railway, soon taken over by the London and South Western Railway, opened in 1870.

It was opened in stages between 1871 and 1873 and closed in 1966. It served a mostly rural area although it carried some through services from east of Taunton to the seaside resort of Ilfracombe.
The Hampton Court branch line is a short railway branch line in Surrey, England, with stations at Thames Ditton and Hampton Court. Hampton Court Palace, an important tourist attraction, is close to the terminus across the River Thames in the London Borough of Richmond, but considerable residential development has taken place around the stations on the line and travel-to-work journeys are dominant. There are eight disused railway stations between Wadebridge and Bodmin North on the former Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway in Cornwall, in the United Kingdom, with ten other closed sidings on the branches to Ruthern Bridge and Wenfordbridge. The section from Boscarne Junction to Bodmin General is currently part of the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway; the line from Wadebridge to Wenfordbridge is now part of the Camel Trail, and the line to Ruthern Bridge can be followed for much of its length as it runs parallel to a public road.

Barnstaple railway station was the western terminus of the Devon and Somerset Railway. It was situated on the south eastern side of Barnstaple in Devon, England. It was served by passenger trains from 1873 until 1960, and by freight trains until 1970.

Instow railway station was a railway station in the village of Instow, North Devon, England, on the Bideford Extension of the North Devon Railway. Opened in November 1855, the station closed to passengers in 1965, but the line remained open for freight until 1982. The signal box has been preserved as a working attraction. The Atlantic Coast Express used to go through the station on its way to Torrington, but it did not call at Instow.
