AllMusic's Scott Yanow wrote "The set does take quite awhile to get going with much of the first two parts consisting of introductions and transitions to themes that never seem to arrive," but that "due to the memorable final section, this lengthy work is one of the high points of [Marsalis's] career thus far." The album recorded jazz tunes whose names Bearden had used for paintings as well as original compositions.

He has also recorded as a sideman, including on trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' Blood on the Fields. Stewart went on multiple national and world tours during his 30-year career as a performer, both under his own name and with the Marsalis band.
