In the Hand of Dante is an upcoming American-Italian drama film, written and directed by Julian Schnabel. It is based upon the novel of the same name by Nick Tosches. It stars Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler and Gal Gadot, with Sabrina Impacciatore, Franco Nero, John Malkovich, and Al Pacino in supporting roles. Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer.

Production

In December 2008, it was announced Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil had acquired rights to In the Hand of Dante by Nick Tosches, with Depp eying to star and produce. [2] In July 2011, it was announced Julian Schnabel would direct the film. [3] In September 2023, Oscar Isaac joined the cast of the film, replacing Depp. [4]

In October 2023, it was announced that Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, and Gal Gadot had joined the cast of the film, with Martin Scorsese set to executive produce. [5] In November 2023, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, Benjamin Clementine, Louis Cancelmi, Sabrina Impacciatore, Franco Nero, Claudio Santamaria, Guido Caprino, Paolo Bonacelli and Dora Romano were announced to star in the film. [1] In February 2024, it was reported that Scorsese would also play a role in the film. [6]

Principal photography began in October 2023 in Italy, with the project securing a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement. [7]

During the film awards season in early 2020, costume designer Sandy Powell wore a cream calico toile two-piece suit of her own design, and collected celebrities' autographs on it in permanent marker. The suit was then auctioned to raise funds for the purchase of artist, filmmaker and gay rights activist Derek Jarman's cottage at Dungeness in Kent, England. The suit was bought by Edwina Dunn, who then donated it to the Theatre and Performance Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. In April 2022 the suit featured in an episode of the BBC Two series Secrets of the Museum.
