Indigoism is the debut mixtape by American hip hop duo The Underachievers, released on February 1, 2013 as a free digital download via Brainfeeder. The mixtape was produced by Mr Bristol, Rich Flyer, The Entreproducers, Bruce Leekixs, Dreamrite and Lou Chapo, among others. Upon its release, it was met with universal acclaim by music critics.
In May 2012, The Underachievers released their first music video for the song "So Devilish". [1] Following the video's release they began gaining attention quickly, with the second song from the mixtape "Gold Soul Theory" getting played on BBC Radio in August 2012. [2] The third song and music video from Indigoism was "Herb Shuttles", which had gotten over four million views on YouTube. [3] [4] On February 1, 2013, the duo released their first official mixtape, Indigoism via Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder record label. [5] Indigoism featured psychedelic lyrics, allusions to the third eye and spirituality. [6] The mixtape was produced by Mr Bristol, Rich Flyer, The Entreproducers, Bruce Lee Kixxs, Dreamrite and Lou Chapo, among others. [7]
Following the release of Indigoism, The Underachievers toured North America and Australia with Joey Badass, Pro Era and Flatbush Zombies from March 21 until April 20, 2013. [8] [9] On July 19, 2013, Indigoism was released to iTunes for retail sale. [10]

Upon its release, Indigoism was met with universal acclaim from music critics. Mike Diver of BBC said, "Yet while The Underachievers' reach is impressive, their inspirational roots are close to home. This rap is resolutely a product of its environment, as much as any PDO-covered speciality. You can taste the concrete, the glass, the history. If the Beast Coast movement has passed you by ‘til now, The Underachievers set it front and centre in their lyrical landscape, frequent references positioning it as a not-so-underground happening impossible to ignore. Especially when the music its ethos is set to comes as fully formed as Indigoism. One wonders how its makers can step their game up significantly for a debut set proper. [...] Indigoism is worth more than just blazing to. It deserves to, and should, blaze a path for its makers, from DatPiff to the dark side of the moon." [11] Pitchfork Media gave the mixtape an eight out of ten saying, "While many of their contemporaries subscribe to a school of rap that extols the joys of drug use, gleefully cataloguing chemicals consumed, the Underachievers' Issa Dash and AK treat mind-altering substances like sacraments, like battering rams at the doors of perception. Their debut mixtape, Indigoism, is druggy, but aesthetically so; beneath the surface lies a work of art-damaged mysticism and pyrotechnic wordplay." [15] Jesse Fairfax of HipHopDX stated, "Indigoism is a refreshing first effort for Issa Dash & Ak whose themes of consciousness and psychedelics boost their creativity in developing something vaguely familiar while not exactly derivative, a rarity in this day and age. Despite a slight amount of filler and the topics suffering a lack of diversity, The Underachievers have covered their bases well enough to attain fandom from purists and adolescents alike." [12] Being praised as their "mixtape of the week", Tom Breihan of Stereogum said, "As rappers, they’re technical marvels who still come off like scabby young punks. They don’t project much in the way of starpower, and I almost certainly wouldn't recognize either one on the street, but they haven’t let that stop them from making exciting music." [14]
Closing out the year, Indigoism was named to multiple "best albums of the year" lists. Complex ranked it at number 43 on their list of the 50 best albums of 2013. They commented saying, "For the better part of Indigoism, The Underachievers explore themes of spirituality told through a prism of psychedelic drugs. Songs like "6th Sense" and "Gold Soul Theory" delve into the group's daily practice of opening up their "third eye," which in turn allows them to creep into creative spaces they wouldn't otherwise be able to access. Sounds a little hippie-dippy, sure, but they pull it off with aplomb. But just listen to "T.A.D.E.D." or "My Prism"—high-level seminars on self-knowledge." [16] Spin positioned it at number 34 on their list of the 40 best hip-hop albums of the year. They elaborated saying, "As self-described young pharaohs smoking "Herb Shuttles" and popping tabs of LSD that crack open their third eye like Hieroglyphics, the Underachievers exemplify pure poverty, and convey the excitement of young black men learning knowledge of self. There's the customary nod to New York hip-hop's upgraded status ("New New York"), but the Underachievers sound like they're in their own lane, trends be damned." [17] PrettyMuchAmazing named it the eighth best mixtape of 2013. [18]

Acid Rap is the second mixtape by American rapper Chance the Rapper. It was released on April 30, 2013, as a free digital download. In July 2013, the mixtape debuted at number 63 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, due to bootleg downloads on iTunes and Amazon not affiliated with the artist. The mixtape has been certified "diamond" on mixtape site Datpiff, for garnering over 1,000,000 downloads. It was rereleased on streaming services on June 21, 2019, alongside his 2012 mixtape 10 Day. A 10th anniversary Complete Edition was later released, including the full version of "Juice", which previously wasn't available for streaming due to sampling issues.

Rich Forever is the second mixtape by American rapper Rick Ross. It was released on January 6, 2012. It became one of the most downloaded hip hop mixtapes of all time. Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, known by his stage name as Joey Badass, is an American rapper and actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, he formed the regional hip-hop group Pro Era in 2011, with whom he has released three mixtapes and formed the larger collective, Beast Coast the following year.
Hotel California is the third studio album by American rapper Tyga. It was released on April 9, 2013, by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records; distributed by Republic Records. The album features guest appearances from Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, The Game, Jadakiss, while the production on the album was handled by DJ Mustard, Detail, Cool & Dre, David D.A. "M.A.A.D City" is a song by American rapper Kendrick Lamar, from his second studio album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (2012). The song, which appears as the eighth track on the album, features a guest appearance from fellow Compton native and West Coast rapper MC Eiht. The song was produced by Top Dawg in-house producers THC and Sounwave for the first part of the instrumental, and Terrace Martin for the second part. The song peaked at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Kevin Lee "Chevy" Woods is an American rapper and songwriter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his affiliation with hometown native rapper Wiz Khalifa, having signed to his Taylor Gang record label as among its first signees in the late 2000s. Woods made his first major appearance on Khalifa's 2011 song "Taylor Gang," which received gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). He has released the collaborative project The Cookout (2011) with Khalifa, as well as his Gangland mixtape series.
"Power Trip" is a song by American rapper and record producer J. Cole featuring American singer Miguel. It was released on February 14, 2013 as the lead single from J. Cole's second studio album, Born Sinner (2013). The song was written and produced by J. Cole himself, with Hubert Laws receiving songwriting credits for the sampling of his song "No More".
Sudan Ameer Williams, better known by his stage name Iamsu!, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer from Richmond, California. He is the lead member of the hip hop group the HBK Gang, which was formed in 2008 and joined by fellow Bay Area artists including Kehlani and Sage the Gemini. He is best known for his guest appearances on Sage the Gemini's 2013 single "Gas Pedal" and LoveRance's 2011 single "Up!," both of which peaked within the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100. He signed with Alternative Distribution Alliance to release his debut studio album Sincerely Yours (2014), which moderately entered the Billboard 200 and received mixed reviews.
Flatbush Zombies are an American hip hop group from the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York City, formed in 2010. The group is composed of rappers Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott, with Elliott also serving as their regular record producer. The trio are part of the East Coast hip hop supergroup Beast Coast, with fellow Brooklyn-based rap groups The Underachievers and Pro Era.
Trap Lord is the debut studio album by American rapper ASAP Ferg. The album was released on August 20, 2013, by ASAP Worldwide, Polo Grounds Music, and RCA Records. The album features guest appearances from ASAP Rocky, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, French Montana, Trinidad James, Schoolboy Q, Waka Flocka Flame, Aston Matthews, B-Real and Onyx.
Migos were an American hip hop group founded in North Atlanta, specifically Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 2008. The group was composed of rapper Quavo, his nephew Takeoff, and their mutual friend Offset. Quavo is from Athens, Georgia, while Offset and Takeoff were born and raised in nearby Lawrenceville. As a group, they were managed by Coach K, the former manager of Gucci Mane and Jeezy, and frequently collaborated with producers DJ Durel, Murda Beatz, Zaytoven, and Buddah Bless. Recognized for their contribution to trap music in the 2010s, Billboard stated that the group "influenced pop culture and the entire English language by bringing their North Atlanta roots to the mainstream".

Then on July 9, 2013, a deluxe edition of the mixtape was released to digital music retailers. Production on the mixtape was primarily handled by Iamsu! and other members of the group The Invasion, among others such as Trackademicks, and Tha Bizness. The album featured guest appearances members of The Invasion, HBK Gang, among others such as Problem, Juvenile, Ty Dolla Sign, Terrace Martin, Tank, and Mistah FAB. The mixtape was met with generally positive reviews from music critics.
The Underachievers are an American hip hop duo from Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. Formed in 2011, the duo is composed of rappers AK the Savior and Issa Gold. American record producer Flying Lotus signed the duo to his Brainfeeder record label in 2012. Following that signing they independently released two mixtapes, Indigoism and Lords of Flatbush in 2013. Their debut studio album Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium was released on August 12, 2014. The Underachievers released their second official album Evermore: The Art of Duality on September 25, 2015. Their third album, Renaissance was released on May 19, 2017. They released After the Rain on November 9, 2018, and Lords Of Flatbush 3 on June 21, 2019.
Courtney Everald Dewar Jr., better known by his stage name Capital Steez, was an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York. He was a founder of the Brooklyn-based rap collective Pro Era, along with childhood friend Joey Badass. Capital Steez was also a co-founder of the Beast Coast movement, which consists of three main groups based in Flatbush: Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies, and The Underachievers. Capital Steez committed suicide on December 23, 2012, jumping from the roof of the Cinematic Music Group headquarters aged 19. Both Pro Era and Beast Coast went on to gain international success in the years following his death.
Sincerely Yours is the debut studio album by American rapper Iamsu!. The album was released on May 13, 2014, by HBK Gang and Warner Music Group's Alternative Distribution Alliance. Recording for the album took place during 2013 and 2014. The album's production was handled by members of The Invasion, Tha Bizness, Jake One, Trackademicks and Chase N. Cashe, among others. Iamsu! collaborated with various artists on the album including 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Too Short, E-40, Berner, Dizzy Wright, along with HBK Gang members Sage the Gemini, P-Lo, Kool John, Skipper and Dave Steezy. The album was supported by the singles, "Only That Real" featuring 2 Chainz and Sage the Gemini and "I Love My Squad".
Marlon Fung, better known by his stage name Issa Gold, is an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York. He is one half of the hip hop duo the Underachievers, along with AK. In 2014 the rapper considered leaving a career in rap but was short lived.
Antonio Lewis, better known by his stage name Zombie Juice, is an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York. He attended Midwood High School in Brooklyn. He is one third of the hip hop trio Flatbush Zombies. Along with his rapping career, Lewis also directed a music video for the Flatbush Zombies song "Thugnificense".
Ideas+drafts+loops is a mixtape by Flying Lotus, released on December 10, 2013 by Brainfeeder. It was released for free via MediaFire and the Brainfeeder website. The mixtape contains guest features by Andreya Triana, Baths, Earl Sweatshirt, Mapei, Niki Randa, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, The Underachievers and Viktor Vaughn; and a remix of Kanye West's song "Black Skinhead".
