The Inspector General of Police (IGP) [1] [2] is the senior-most and highest ranked police officer of Bangladesh and the head of the Bangladesh Police, who oversees all police activities throughout the country. He reports directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs and is appointed by the Government of Bangladesh.
The Chief of Bangladesh Police is an Inspector General, which is the only three star rank of Bangladesh Police. This is a list of Inspector Generals of Police since 1947, the inception of Bangladesh as East Pakistan. [3]

The Bangladesh Police is the national law enforcement agency of Bangladesh, operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It plays a crucial role in maintaining peace, and enforcement of law and order within Bangladesh. Though the police are primarily concerned with the maintenance of law and order and security of persons and property of individuals, they also play a big role in the criminal justice system. Bangladesh Police played an important role during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police is the unit of Bangladesh Police responsible for law enforcement in the metropolis of Dhaka, the national capital and most populous city in Bangladesh. The DMP is the largest police force unit in Bangladesh. At present, the DMP commissioner is Sheikh Sajjad Ali.
A. K. M. Shahidul Haque is a Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 26th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. He is the founder of Mazid Jarina Foundation School & College.
Hassan Mahmood Khandker is a former Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 26th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police from 31 August 2010 to 30 December 2014. He was the longest serving Inspector General in Bangladesh Police's history. It was during his tenure that Bangladesh Police got Independence Day Award. Moreover, rank badge of the IGP upgraded to 3-star general in his time, earlier IGP was bearing two-star general rank badge since 1983.
Benazir Ahmed is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 28th inspector general of the Bangladesh Police. Prior to his appointment as IGP, he served as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020. He is currently on a US sanctions list due to RAB's alleged role in forcibly disappearing citizens since December 2021.
Habibur Rahman is a former Bangladeshi police officer. He served as 35th commissioner of DMP. Prior to join here he was head of the Tourist Police. From 2019 to 2022, he was deputy inspector general (DIG) of Dhaka Range, and DIG of administration and discipline at the police headquarters in Dhaka. He was sent into retirement from government service in public interest according to the provisions of section no. 45 of the Public Service Act, 2018.
Ashraful Huda is a former Bangladesh police officer who served as the Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh Police during 2004–2005. Ashraful joined the Pakistani army as a commissioned officer in 1967 and served in Bangladesh army after independence.
Muhammad Nurul Huda is a Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 17th Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh Police during 2000–2001. He is a columnist at The Daily Star. He worked as a consultant of the United Nations Development Programme.
Mujibur Rahman is a former Bangladeshi military officer who was the longest serving director general of the Special Security Force. Prior to his dismissal on 11 September 2024, he served as general officer commanding of Army Training and Doctrine Command. Before that, he was Quartermaster general at Army Headquarters. He came to the limelight in 2016, as the Operational Commander who carried out Operation Thunderbolt during the Holey Artisan Attack.
Md. Monirul Islam is former additional inspector general of the Bangladesh Police who served as head of the Special Branch.
Asaduzzaman Mia, is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 33rd Police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the longest serving commissioner and a former chief executive officer of National Security Affairs Cell under the Cabinet Division. During his tenure as DMP Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police was considered to be at its peak.
Shafiqul Islam is a retired police officer who served as the 34th police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was made the DMP commissioner on 14 September 2019. He previously served as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is a disgraced Bangladeshi police officer who was sacked for key involvement in mass killing during the Bangladesh student protest. He is now in custody. Mamun served as the 31st Inspector general of Bangladesh Police (IGP) who served from 30 September 2022 to 6 August 2024. Previously, he served as director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was made the DG of RAB in April 2020. Prior to joining RAB, he was the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Khandker Golam Faruq is a retired Bangladeshi police officer and an additional inspector general of police of the Bangladesh Police. He served as the 35th commissioner of DMP. Prior to join here, he was the 13th rector of Police Staff College Bangladesh. Before that he served as principal of Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah, Rajshahi. He is a former deputy inspector general of Chittagong Range of Bangladesh Police.
Krishna Pada Roy is a retired additional inspector general of the Bangladesh Police and former commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police. He is a former additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Md Mustafizur Rahman is a retired secretary of the Bangladesh Ministry of Home Affairs. He is the former secretary of the Ministry of Land.
Md. Atiqul Islam is an additional inspector general of crime and operation of the Bangladesh Police. He is a former chief of the Bangladesh Highway Police.
Mallick Faqrul Islam is a Bangladeshi police officer and rector of Police Staff College, Bangladesh. He is the former additional inspector general of police of the Highway Police. He was the deputy inspector general of Special Branch.
Md. Mukhlesur Rahman is a Bangladesh Police officer and former director general of the Rapid Action Battalion. During his term concerns were raised about human rights violations by Rapid Action Battalion personnel. The United States used the Magnitsky Act against seven former and current officers of RAB; the first usage against Bangladesh in 2021.
Md. Mainul Hasan is a Bangladeshi police officer. He was the 36th Commissioner of DMP. Prior to join here, he was Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department of police.
