The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) is an autonomous research institute dedicated for development studies and related subfields in Bidhannagar, West Bengal, India. Established in 2002 as a centre of excellence in social sciences, the institute is funded by the Government of West Bengal and recognised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). [1]

History

The IDSK was set up in 2002 by the Government of West Bengal as an autonomous centre of excellence in social sciences. Economist Amiya Kumar Bagchi was appointed as its Founder Director; he was later bestowed with the designation of Emeritus Professor of Economics at the institute. [2]

The multidisciplinary MPhil in Development Studies course at the institute was introduced in 2006, while the PhD in Development Studies course started in 2016, both under the auspices of the University of Calcutta. [3]

In 2014, IDSK was recognised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) under the 'New Category of ICSSR Recognized Institutes'. [4]

In the early sixties, when PEs were designed as the principal instrument to serve the social and economic objectives of development, Khera felt a need for an institute that would collect information on PEs, study issues, and undertake consultancy and training for PEs.

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) is the national body overseeing research in the social sciences in India. It was established in New Delhi in 1969.

The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies is an autonomous research institute based in Kolkata. It is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India. Sugata Marjit is the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and currently the First Distinguished Professor at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and the Project Director of Centre for Training & Research in Public Finance and Policy (CTRPFP) [A Ministry of Finance, Government of India funded initiative]. He is a Ph.D. at the University of Rochester and currently the Editor of South Asian Journal of Macroeconomics and Public Finance.
