The Interamerican Society of Cardiology (SIAC for its Spanish acronym) is a nongovernmental association formed by the National Societies of Cardiology of the American Continent. The Interamerican Society of Cardiology, together with the European Society of Cardiology, founded in 1950, the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, founded in 1956, and the African Society of Cardiology founded in 1981 are the four Intercontinental Professional Societies of Cardiology of the World Heart Federation (WHF for its acronym in English). History

The Interamerican Society of Cardiology (SIAC) was founded in Mexico on 18 April 1944, at the initiative of Doctor Ignacio Chávez. That year, the occasion being the inauguration of the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City its founder and director, Dr. Ignacio Chávez, invited distinguished cardiologists from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean to the ceremony.[ citation needed ]

After a fruitful exchange of ideas at this meeting, it was concluded that, in fact, the event had actually constituted an Interamerican Congress and the suggestion was to acknowledge it as such. Those attending did so and decided to form the Interamerican Society of Cardiology and to recognize the event as the first Interamerican Congress of Cardiology. It was also decided to delegate upon Dr. Chavez the task of drawing up the articles of incorporation and bylaws of the Society, and he was requested to convene another Interamerican Congress of Cardiology in Mexico City when World War II ended. Dr. Ignacio Chavez was unanimously elected as President of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology.[ citation needed ]

Mission

The main purpose of the Society is to group together the Societies of Cardiology of all the countries of the Americas for the advancement of cardiology, to promote research, teaching and the association of physicians, surgeons, and researchers specialized in this field. It also strives to promote optimal cardiovascular health in the population of the Americas through the education and ongoing professional development of its members.[ citation needed ]

Vision

To unite the Cardiovascular Societies representing all the countries of the Americas in order to facilitate the advancement of cardiovascular science, by:

  1. Promoting research and exchange.
  2. Supporting graduate level education and ongoing professional development.
  3. Granting value to being a member of the "Society - SIAC".

General Assembly

At present there are 26 national professional societies of cardiology members of SIAC forming the General Assembly to bring together more than 40,000 cardiologists.

Administrative office

Since the founding of the SIAC and according to the bylaws in force, the Secretary-Treasurer is permanently based at the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City.

Interamerican Congress

The Interamerican Congress of Cardiology is held every two years in a country of the American continent. The XXIV Interamerican Congress of Cardiology held from the 18th to 20 October 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, had 9946 attendees, including cardiologists, teachers and students, of which 781 were foreigners from 22 different countries. The XXV Interamerican Congress of Cardiology will take place from the 4th to 7 December 2015 in Santiago de Chile. At the last General Assembly the city of São Paulo, Brazil was approved as host of the XXVI Interamerican Congress of Cardiology to be held in 2017.

Cardiology Branch of medicine dealing with the heart

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart as well as some parts of the cardiovascular system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. Pan-American Team Handball Federation

The Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) is the continental governing body for handball, beach handball, wheelchair handball and snow handball in Americas since 23 May 1977. PATHF includes North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. PATHF's primary functions is to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct Men's World Handball Championship and Women's World Handball Championship qualifying tournaments.

Michael Lesch

Michael Lesch was a Jewish American physician and medical educator who helped identify an important genetic disorder associated with retardation and self-mutilation. This disease is now known as the Lesch–Nyhan syndrome. In the mid-1960s when the syndrome was discovered, Lesch was a research associate working at the Laboratory of General and Comparative Biochemistry at the NIH National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. William Nyhan, a pediatrician and biochemical geneticist, was his mentor. Lesch was 30 years old when he discovered the disease.

The Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) is the national voice for cardiovascular physicians and scientists in Canada. The CCS is a membership organization that represents more than 1,800 professionals in the cardiovascular field. Its mission is to promote cardiovascular health and care through knowledge translation, professional development and leadership in health policy.

The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) is a non-profit professional association devoted to the study of nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular computed tomography, which are subsets of nuclear medicine. Henry Neufeld, was an internationally prominent Israeli cardiologist and scholar. His research and teaching interests included cardiology, epidemiology, genetics and biomedical engineering. He served as chief scientist of the Israel Ministry of Health and was the founder and director of the Cardiac Clinic at Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer.

Ron Waksman is a cardiologist. He is the Associate Director, Division of Cardiology, Washington Hospital Center (WHC) and professor of medicine (cardiology) at Georgetown University.

FRCP FACC was a distinguished and internationally renowned research cardiologist and an Honorary Consultant Physician at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Sleight was Emeritus Field Marshal Alexander Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford.

Ashok Seth Indian interventional cardiologist

Ashok Seth is an Indian interventional cardiologist, credited with the performance of over 50,000 angiograms and 20,000 angioplasties, which has been included in the Limca Book of Records, a reference book for achievements and records from an Indian perspective. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Ireland and serves as the chief cardiologist, holding the chairs of the department of cardiovascular sciences and cardiology council at the Fortis Healthcare. Seth, a recipient of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, was honored by the Government of India with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri, in 2003, followed by Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award, in 2015.

Sim Kui Hian

Prof. Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian is a Malaysian politician and cardiologist who has served as Deputy Premier of Sarawak and the territory's Minister of Public Health, Local Government and Housing of Sarawak in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration under Premier Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Abang Openg since January 2022 as well as Member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Batu Kawah since May 2016. He is Sarawak's first deputy premier of Chinese descent in more than a decade after George Chan Hong Nam stepped down in 2011. He served as State Minister of Housing and Local Government of Sarawak from January 2017 to December 2021 and State Minister of Housing of Sarawak from May 2016 to January 2017. He also served as Senator from April 2014 to April 2017. Additionally, he is in charge of several federal and state government departments and agencies ranging from the Kuching South City Council, the Irrigation and Drainage Department of Sarawak, the Sewerage Services Department of Sarawak, the Sarawak Health Department to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department. He is a member of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), which he is the Party President since September 2014. He is also one of the founding Vice-Chairmen of the GPS coalition, in which SUPP is a component party.

The British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) is a UK-wide health organisation based in London.

Shahbudin Rahimtoola

Shahbudin Rahimtoola was a cardiologist based in Los Angeles, United States. He served as Distinguished Professor at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Rahimtoola was credited for his contribution to two clinical syndromes namely the hibernating myocardium and 'prosthetic valve-mismatch'.

The Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists, also known as IACC, is a non-profit association for non invasive cardiologists. IACC is based in Kerala, India The association works towards prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and the eradication of cardio-vascular mortality in rural India. It was established in the year 2008 by Dr. Rajesh Rajan, 4 Padma Shri Doctors, Mohammed Shafiq and five other colleagues from Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences.

Béla Merkely Hungarian cardiologist (born 1966)

Dr. Béla Merkely is a Hungarian interventional cardiologist and sports cardiologist, a university professor, director of Semmelweis University’s Heart and Vascular Centre and the current rector of Semmelweis University since 1 July 2018.

The Heart Institute of the Caribbean is a cardiac hospital and care institute on the island of Jamaica, specializing in cardiology, cardiovascular medicine, and cardiovascular surgery.
