The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. Physicians who specialize in this field of medicine are called cardiologists, a specialty of internal medicine. Pediatric cardiologists are pediatricians who specialize in cardiology. Physicians who specialize in cardiac surgery are called cardiothoracic surgeons or cardiac surgeons, a specialty of general surgery.
The American College of Cardiology (ACC), based in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit medical association established in 1949. It bestows credentials upon cardiovascular specialists who meet its qualifications. Michael Lesch was a Jewish American physician and medical educator who helped identify an important genetic disorder associated with retardation and self-mutilation. This disease is now known as the Lesch–Nyhan syndrome. In the mid-1960s when the syndrome was discovered, Lesch was a research associate working at the Laboratory of General and Comparative Biochemistry at the NIH National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. William Nyhan, a pediatrician and biochemical geneticist, was his mentor. Lesch was 30 years old when he discovered the disease.

Prof. Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian is a Malaysian politician and cardiologist who has served as Deputy Premier of Sarawak and the territory's Minister of Public Health, Local Government and Housing of Sarawak in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration under Premier Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Abang Openg since January 2022 as well as Member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Batu Kawah since May 2016. He is Sarawak's first deputy premier of Chinese descent in more than a decade after George Chan Hong Nam stepped down in 2011. He served as State Minister of Housing and Local Government of Sarawak from January 2017 to December 2021 and State Minister of Housing of Sarawak from May 2016 to January 2017. He also served as Senator from April 2014 to April 2017. Additionally, he is in charge of several federal and state government departments and agencies ranging from the Kuching South City Council, the Irrigation and Drainage Department of Sarawak, the Sewerage Services Department of Sarawak, the Sarawak Health Department to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department. He is a member of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), which he is the Party President since September 2014. He is also one of the founding Vice-Chairmen of the GPS coalition, in which SUPP is a component party.
