Irene Mounce

Irene Mounce was a Canadian scientist who specialized in the mating systems of wood-destroying fungi, Hymenomycetes. [1] She was a mycologist at the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, with Canada's federal department of agriculture (now Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). Her diligence and insight broke new ground in mycology and her successes made the way easier for other members of her sex. [2]

Biography

Irene Mounce was born in Union (now Cumberland), British Columbia in 1894. [2] She earned her B.A. (1918) and M.A. (1920) from the University of British Columbia and a M.Sc. (1922) from the University of Manitoba where she studied under Arthur Henry Reginald Buller (studying mating systems of Coprinus ). [2] [3] In 1920, Irene Mounce was the first woman to do graduate studies in agriculture, eventually earning her two graduate degrees in botany. [4] She financed much of her education through scholarships and laboratory work. [2] She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1929) where she studied under Joseph Horace Faull. [2] [3] During a visit to Robert Hartig in Germany, Faull saw the value of studying the mycelium of the wood-decay fungi in the laboratory and tutored Irene's research in this area. [2] In her doctoral studies, Mounce showed the complex genetic makeup of Fomes pinicola , which became the basis of the classic paper on cultural characteristics of the Polyporaceae, published in 1929. [2] [3] After a mycological career spanning about 25 years and her resignation at age 50, Mounce died June 26, 1987, in Vancouver, British Columbia. [2]

Career

In 1924, Mounce joined the Division of Botany at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in Ottawa, Ontario. [3] In the summer of 1925, she made her first trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands to investigate the decays of Sitka spruce trees. [2] This research led to the successful identification of the majority of these pathogens in non-fruiting culture. [3] During the 1930s, Mounce was in charge of three major projects: development of the herbarium of wood-decay fungi, development of the reference collection of pure cultures of pathogenic fungi, and studies on the sexuality and cultural characters of wood-decay fungi. [2] During World War II she was also assigned to the task force studying seed-borne disease. [2]

In 1938 she transferred to the Saanichton laboratory in British Columbia to study vegetable diseases. [3] Except for wood-destroying fungi, collected by Irene Mounce and others of the Division of Botany, no other systematic collecting of fungi in British Columbia was possible until the large-scale botanicomycological exploration by the division in the 1950s. [3] Mounce worked at Saanichton's Dominion Laboratory of Plant Pathology from 1942 to 1945, but had to resign at age 50 because she got married. The employment of married women was forbidden in Canada until 1955. [5]

The Polyporales are an order of about 1800 species of fungi in the division Basidiomycota. The order includes some polypores as well as many corticioid fungi and a few agarics. Many species within the order are saprotrophic, most of them wood-rotters. Some genera, such as Ganoderma and Fomes, contain species that attack living tissues and then continue to degrade the wood of their dead hosts. Those of economic importance include several important pathogens of trees and a few species that cause damage by rotting structural timber. It performs essential nutrient cycling functions in forests. It has been reported that mushrooms have significant antioxidant activity.

Sir Edwin John Butler was an Irish mycologist and plant pathologist. He became the Imperial Mycologist in India and later the first director of the Imperial Bureau of Mycology in England. He was knighted in 1939. During his twenty years in India, he began large scale surveys on fungi and plant pathology and published the landmark book Fungi and Disease in Plants: An Introduction to the Diseases of Field and Plantation Crops, especially those of India and the East (1918) and has been called the Father of Mycology and Plant Pathology in India.

Michael Francis Madelin (1931–2007) was a British mycologist. He held research faculty positions at Imperial College, University of London, and the University of Bristol, and undertook pioneering research in conidial fungi and slime moulds, with specific reference to their physiology and ecology.

Silvia N. Blumenfeld is an expert on mycology. From 1986 to 2004, she was a Professor of Mycology and Biotechnology of Filamentous Fungi at the National University of Comahue, in Río Negro, Argentina. She emigrated to Israel in 2002, where she became the curator of the Tel Aviv University fungi collection, specializing in medicinal mushrooms. She has over 50 articles, books, and patents to her name, and has received academic honours. In 1995, she was awarded the Argentine National 'José Antonio Balseiro' Prize for her work.

Margaret Elizabeth Barr Bigelow (1923-2008) was a Canadian mycologist known for her contributions to the Ascomycetes fungi.

Robert Lee Gilbertson was a distinguished American mycologist and educator. He was a faculty member at University of Arizona for 26 years until his retirement from teaching in 1995; he was a Professor Emeritus at U of A until his death on October 26, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. 2011. He held concurrent positions as Plant Pathologist, Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona (1967–95) for a project Research on wood-rotting fungi and other fungi associated with southwestern plants and was collaborator and consultant with Center for Forest Mycology Research, US Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin (1957–1981).

Mildred Katherine Nobles was a Canadian mycologist. Born in Colborne, Northumberland County, Ontario, the only surviving child of William Harold and Ethel Nobles, she spent her early life at the family farm in Vernonville. She was an authority of the culture and identification of wood-rotting fungi, and developed a numerical identification system today known as the "Nobles Species Code". Nobles died in Ottawa, Ontario after a short illness. She was awarded the "Distinguished Mycologist" award, along with Rolf Singer, by the Mycological Society of America in 1986.

Kenneth A. Harrison was a Canadian mycologist. He was for many years a plant pathologist at what is now the Atlantic Food and Horticulture Research Centre in Nova Scotia. After retirement, he contributed to the taxonomy of the Agaricomycotina, particularly the tooth fungi of the families Hydnaceae and Bankeraceae, in which he described several new species.

Larry F. Grand was an American mycologist who had a long career focusing on ectomycorrhizal fungi, wood decay fungi and plant pathogenic fungi.

Yolande Dalpé is a former Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. She became the first mycologist in Ottawa to study the taxonomy of mycorrhizal fungi. Her research focuses on developing new information on taxonomy, phylogeny, distribution and biology of fungi, including systematic research related to biosecurity/alien invasive species as well as species involved in the development of bioproducts. She was awarded the Lawson Medal by the Canadian Botanical Association for her "cumulative, lifetime contributions to Canadian botany, for the research she has performed in mycology, and has been recognized nationally and internationally." The standard author abbreviation Dalpé is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.

Luella Kayla Weresub, Ph.D. was a world authority on the botanical nomenclature of fungi, especially corticioid fungi and sclerotium-producing basidiomycetes. She was a mycologist at the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, with Canada’s federal department of agriculture. Her influence on Canadian mycology and her concern with public education are recognized in the Canadian Botanical Association’s annual Luella K. Weresub lecture in Mycology and the Weresub Prize awarded for the best student paper published by a Canadian student in mycology.

Mary Elizabeth Elliott was a Canadian plant pathologist and mycologist who spent 28 years with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. She was known for her work on the taxonomy and physiology of the Sclerotiniaceae; she was also knowledgeable in the identification of mushrooms, a service she offered regularly to the public, and served as president of the Canadian Botanical Association.

Stephen Denis Garrett was a British plant pathologist and mycologist who did pioneering work on soil-borne pathogens, root pathology and soil ecology. He was the first to apply ecological concepts to interactions in the soil. Much of his research used as a model system the fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis, which causes the important cereal disease take-all. He also studied Armillaria root rot of trees, among other plant diseases.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lilian Hawker</span> British mycologist

Lilian Edith Hawker was a British mycologist, known for her work on fungal physiology, particularly spore production. She was an expert on British truffles, and also published in the fields of plant physiology and plant pathology. She was also known for her contributions to education in mycology. Most of her career was spent at the botany department of the Imperial College of Science and Technology (1932–45) and the University of Bristol (1945–73), where she held the chair in mycology (1965–73) and was dean of the science faculty (1970–73). She served as president of the British Mycological Society, and was elected an honorary member of that society and of the Mycological Society of America. She published an introduction to fungi and two books on fungal physiology, of which Physiology of Fungi (1950) was among the first to survey the field, and also co-edited two microbiology textbooks.

Stanley John Hughes (1918–2019) was a Canadian scientist who is known throughout the global field of mycology for developing and introducing a precise and meticulous system for classifying fungi that is still used today. A naturalized Canadian, he was a federal research scientist for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at what is today the Ottawa Research and Development Centre.

Guy Richard Bisby (1889–1958) was an American Canadian mycologist and botanist in plant pathology. He spent his early career working as a professor at the University of Minnesota and University of Manitoba in plant pathology, and his late career as Senior Assistant Mycologist at the Imperial Mycological Institute in Kew, England. He published around fifty books and papers in mycology that extensively contributed to the taxonomy and nomenclature of fungi.
