Banten is the westernmost province on the island of Java,Indonesia. Its capital city is Serang and its largest city is Tangerang. The province borders West Java and the Special Capital Region of Jakarta on the east,the Java Sea on the north,the Indian Ocean on the south,and the Sunda Strait on the west and shares a maritime border with Lampung to the west. The province covers an area of 9,352.77 km2 (3,611.12 sq mi). It had a population of over 11.9 million in the 2020 census,up from about 10.6 million in 2010. The estimated mid-2023 population was 12.308 million. Formerly part of the province of West Java,Banten was split off to become a province on 17 October 2000.

The regency has an area of 3,312.18 km2 and had a population of 1,204,095 at the 2010 census and 1,386,793 at the 2020 census;the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,433,698 - comprising 737,148 males and 696,550 females. The town of Rangkasbitung in the north of the regency is the administrative centre. The regency is bordered by Pandeglang Regency to the west,Serang Regency to the north,and Tangerang Regency to the north-east,and by the Bogor and Sukabumi regencies to the east.
Ratu Atut Chosiyah is a former governor of the province of Banten,Indonesia. She was suspended from office in 2014 because of a corruption case. She held office for several terms. Before her election as governor in 2006,she was the deputy governor under Djoko Munandar starting from 11 January 2002. Djoko was involved in a corruption case and was suspended from office in October 2005. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed Ratu Atut as the acting governor to take over Djoko's administrative duties and she later became governor. She thus became the first female governor in Indonesia. In May 2014,she was formally charged by the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission for alleged corruption. In early September 2014,she was sentenced to a four-year term of imprisonment on the charges brought by the Commission against her. In September 2022,Ratu Atut was released on parole.
Kendal is a regency in the northern part of Central Java province in Indonesia,west of Semarang. The regency covers an area of 1,002.23 km2 and had a population of 900,313 at the 2010 census and 1,018,505 at the 2020 census;the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,052,830,consisting of 530,940 (50.43%) males and 521,890 (49.57%) females.
The Bantenese are an Austronesian ethnic group native to Banten in the westernmost part of Java island,Indonesia. The area of Banten province corresponds more or less with the area of the former Banten Sultanate,a Bantenese nation state that preceded Indonesia. In his book "The Sultanate of Banten",Guillot Claude writes on page 35:“These estates,owned by the Bantenese of Chinese descent,were concentrated around the village of Kelapadua.”Most of Bantenese are Sunni Muslim. The Bantenese speak the Sundanese-Banten dialect,a variety of the Sundanese language which does not have a general linguistic register,this language is called Basa Sunda Banten.

A variety of Bantenese is spoken by the Ciptagelar people in the Kasepuhan Ciptagelar traditional community in the Cisolok district and the Kasepuhan Banten Kidul traditional community in the Lebak Regency.

In the 2019 Indonesian presidential election,he supported a friend who was also a Muslim cleric from Banten,Ma'ruf Amin,who became the running mate of incumbent presidential candidate,Joko Widodo. Even so,in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election,he supported Prabowo Subianto as a candidate for Indonesian President and instructed his students to vote for Subianto.
The 2019 Sunda Strait earthquake occurred on the night of 2 August 2019,when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rattled Sunda Strait at a moderate depth of 52.8 kilometres. The epicentre was located 214 km from Bandar Lampung,the capital of Lampung and 147 km west of Sumur,Pandeglang Regency. The earthquake struck with a maximum intensity of VI (Strong). The earthquake prompted a tsunami warning in the area,with authorities urging coastal residents to immediately evacuate to higher grounds.
