Arnav Singh Raizada, a suave, arrogant, and immensely successful business tycoon from Delhi, crosses paths with Khushi Kumari Gupta, a spirited girl from a humble background in Lucknow. Arnav suffers from trauma from his parents' deaths 14 years ago, and is cold to everyone but his family - especially his sister Anjali, whom he loves greatly. Khushi, who also lost her parents and was adopted by her aunt and uncle, is a very cheerful woman who is best friends with her goddess, Devi Maiyya.
Their worlds collide when Khushi accidentally disrupts one of his fashion events and falls into his arms, leading to chaos that causes her sister Payal's wedding to be called off. He believes she is a corporate spy that was paid to ruin his show and mistreats her. After an argument between them, Arnav releases tapes of Khushi falling into his arms at the fashion show, which ruins her reputation by painting her in a bad light. Khushi is ridiculed by her neighborhood and harassed on the streets - she is saved by Shyam Manohar Jha, a seemingly kind man who hides the truth - that he is married to Arnav's sister, Anjali.
Reeling from disgrace and humiliation, Khushi and Payal are sent to Delhi to live with their paternal aunt Madhumati. In Delhi, fate ensures another run-in with Arnav when Khushi damages his car. Determined to repay him, she starts selling traditional Chikankari sarees and ends up at the Raizada mansion, Shantivan by mistake. There, she charms Anjali and their grandmother, Devyani Devi, who take an instant liking to her.
Khushi's plans are thwarted by Arnav's aunt Manorama, who falsely accuses her of selling torn sarees, costing her the payment she needed for the car damages. Meanwhile, Shyam, being infatuated with Khushi, reappears in Khushi's life under the pretense of being single and begins staying with Madhumati as a paying guest. Unaware of his true intentions, Khushi seeks his help to find her a job - and he gets her a role at Arnav's office, where she ends up as the secretary of his girlfriend Lavanya.
Arnav, annoyed by her presence, tries to push her out by overwokring her and trying to give her tasks she cannot complete - but Khushi, determined and resilient, completes every challenge he throws her way. Once, in a fit of anger, he sends her to his guesthouse which he was unware was in very bad condition, leading her to be trapped. He saves her just before the building collapses, but Khushi quits her job, insulting him for putting her life at risk.
Khushi considers leaving Delhi, but upon hearing about her parents' financial condition, decides to stay and start a sweet shop. Coincidentally, their first big order takes her straight back to the Raizada house for Anjali's anniversary celebrations.
Later, Anjali hires Khushi to teach Arnav's girlfriend, Lavanya, about family traditions and values so that she can be accepted into the family by Arnav's grandmother. Constant interactions spark a slow transformation in Arnav. Though he mocks Khushi's status to protect his pride, he finds himself falling for her. Their growing closeness culminates during Diwali, where Arnav almost kisses Khushi - reeling from his mistake, he accepts Lavanya's proposal and gets engaged to her.
Meanwhile, Khushi's adoptive father, Shashi discovers Shyam's secret. To stop Shashi from exposing him, Shyam causes him to suffer a paralyzing strokeby withholding his medication. Shashi ends up paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair. Shyam manipulates Madhumati into believing that Shashi wanted him to get married to Khushi and that their match is blessed by the gods. Initially, Khushi refuses to marry Shyam, citing that she never saw him that way - however, after Madhumati emotionally manipulates her and after Arnav gets engaged to Lavanya and tells Khushi she means nothing to him, she is heartbroken and agrees to marry him. When Arnav learns of Khushi's engagement, jealousy and anger resurface. Khushi leaves the Raizada house now that Lavanya has been accepted into Arnav's family.
Meanwhile, Arnav's cousin, Akash, falls in love with Khushi's sister Payal. Arnav and Khushi reunite and make up a truce in order to bring them together, convincing their families of the match, and their wedding preparations begin. Khushi sees Shyam in the Raizada mansion during a pooja and finally learns the truth about Shyam, after which she immediately breaks her engagement with him. Fearing that the revelation might ruin Payal and Akash's wedding and break Anjali's heart, she stays silent, warning Shyam to not approach her again. Arnav, having realized that he is cheating Lavanya by not feeling for her the way she did for him, breaks things off with Lavanya.
As Aakash and Payal's wedding rituals start to take place, Arnav's cousin NK (short for Nand Kishore) is introduced, who is a fun-loving guy and instantly friendly with Khushi, making Arnav jealous. For the next few weeks, Arnav and Khushi grow closer and closer, sharing a lot of romantic moments. Meawhile, Shyam plans to kill Anjali so that he can marry Khushi, falsely believing that Khushi's only problem with him is that he is married and that she will agree to marry him if he is a widower. He makes multiple plans but they all fail. When one of his plans ends in Anjali escaping an accident with minor injuries, an emotional Anjali tells Arnav that he should never let go of his loved ones since life is too short, and Arnav, realizing his love for Khushi, decides to confess it to her.
Things go horribly wrong, however, when Arnav overhears Shyam proposing his love to Khushi. He misinterprets the situation as Khushi and Shyam having an affair. When he confronts Shyam about it, Shyam implicates Khushi, telling Arnav that they love each other and that Anjali is the only obstacle between them. An angry and heartbroken Arnav decides to tell Anjali - however, on hearing that Anjali is pregnant, he changes his mind. Instead, he blackmails Khushi into a six-month contract marriage, threatening to ruin Aakash and Payal's wedding if she did not comply. Khushi, who is confused and heartbroken, agrees to save her sister's marriage.
Khushi and Arnav's families are shocked and angry with their supposed elopement, which causes a lot of tension and even causes Khushi's family to temporarily disown her. Eventually, both families accept their marriage, unaware that it is a contractual marriage. Khushi repeatedly questions Arnav about why he married her but he refuses to answer her. She fights back by annoying him on several occasions. Arnav remains suspicious of her intentions but finds himself growing closer to Khushi, while Khushi struggles to understand his motives.
One day, Khushi falsely comes under the impression that Arnav married her due to a fault in his horoscope. Believing that Arnav is planning to kill her to be with Lavanya, she decides to kill herself instead. Arnav finds out and saves Khushi, and finally reveals why he married her. Although she initially acts indifferent, Khushi tries to explain the truth, but Arnav has trouble believing her and leaves for London for a conference.
Shyam, fueled by greed, manages to manipulate Khushi into getting Arnav to sign a will leaving everything to his name, and then orchestrates Arnav's kidnapping to claim the Raizada fortune. The kidnappers make Arnav call his family and lie that he is in Scotland - fearing that he would never see Khushi again, Arnav tells Khushi "I love you", which initially makes her happy but then makes her realize that something must be wrong for him to say it so suddenly despite his trouble believing in her innocence.
Khushi eventually finds out about Arnav's kidnap. With the help of Manorama and then NK, she manages to rescue him. Upon returning, she tells everyone that it was Shyam who had kidnapped Arnav and reveals the full truth. Shyam denies her claims and tries to tell everyone that Khushi had been trying to make inappropriate advances to him; Payal and NK take Khushi's side. Arnav believes Khushi, slaps Shyam and throws him out of the house.
This, however, devastates Anjali, who believes that Shyam is innocent, and she stops talking to Arnav and Khushi. This leads to further tensions between the family members, between Aakash and Payal as well as Arnav and Khushi themselves.
Arnav and Anjali's paternal grandmother, Subhadra Devi, arrives at Shantivan for the first time in years, having been fed with lies by Shyam that Khushi had tricked Arnav and unfairly kicked him out of the house. She is determined to restore Shyam's position in the family. She insults Khushi on multiple occassions but Arnav defends her. Khushi realizes her marriage to Arnav lacked all the proper rituals. Subhadra Devi reveals this to their families, who are intially angry. However, Arnav agrees to marry Khushi again, performing all the rituals completely this time, and the families agree.
Inbetween their remarriage, Shyam keeps track of the house members by secretly installing cameas in Shantivan. He causes Anjali to have a miscarriage and lose her baby. A devastated Anjali pines for Shyam and her health detoriates rapidly; Khushi, realizing that only Shyam can make her feel better, brings Shyam back into the house, angering Arnav. Arnav warns Shyam that he will throw him out as soon as Anjali gets better.
Subhadra finds out that Khushi's adoptive mother, Garima, is the woman who once unknowingly had an affair with Arnav's father, which led to the suicide of Arnav's parents and subsequently, Anjali's first marriage breaking and Anjali and Arnav being kicked out of their home by their uncle. When Garima begs her to not ruin Khushi's marriage, claiming that she never knew Arnav's father was married, Subhadra pretends to forgive Garima but reveals the truth to Arnav just before their marriage in order to sabotage their wedding. Arnav, devastated, ultimately chooses love over hate. Though he comes late to the wedding hall, he marries Khushi in a grand ceremony, telling Subhadra that blaming Garima alone is unjust when his father was equally at fault and that his love for Khushi is more important than past mistakes.
On their wedding night, Arnav and Khushi discover hidden cameras in their room, planted by Shyam. They uncover more of his misdeeds and, with NK's help, expose his role in Anjali's miscarriage infront of the entire family. Anjali, finally seeing the truth, slaps Shyam and he is sent to jail for good.
Just as peace returns, Arnav's college friend Sheetal arrives with a boy named Aarav, pretending he is Arnav's son to scam the family. She convinces Khushi of this, who tries to leave Arnav for Aarav's happiness, but he stops her. He exposes Sheetal, and they end up adopting Aarav as their own son.
To establish her identity beyond being Arnav's wife, Khushi enters a beauty pageant, which she wins with support from Arnav and the family. The couple, after enduring so many storms, finally find their happily ever after - together, stronger than ever.
