The Italian Chapter of the IEEE Robotic and Automation Society (I-RAS) is the Italian subunit of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.

Local chapters provide Society members with valuable opportunities to network at a local level enabling their personal and professional growth. I-RAS chapter supports local activities. Chapter activities may include guest speakers, workshops and seminars as well as social functions and awards. The IEEE I-RAS Chapter sponsors or cosponsors minisymposia, awards and student competitions and continuing education workshops. It also provides valuable professional contacts, especially for engineers who may have few co-workers who are robotics or automation professionals.

One becomes a member of the IEEE I-RAS Chapter when (s)he joins the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.

Italian RAS chapter was established in 2000. Paolo Fiorini was the Italian RAS chair from 2001 to March 2006, Domenico Prattichizzo was the chair from April 2006 to 2010, since 2011 the chair is Gianluca Antonelli. Italian RAS chapter counts 250 affiliates (June 2012) and is one of the 26 chapters of Italian IEEE section.

I-RAS has been awarded twice by the RAS Chapter of the year award, in 2006 and 2008.

Robot ethics, sometimes known by the short expression "roboethics", concerns ethical problems that occur with robots, such as whether robots pose a threat to humans in the long or short run, whether some uses of robots are problematic, and how robots should be designed such as they act 'ethically'. Robot ethics is a sub-field of ethics of technology, specifically information technology, and it has close links to legal as well as socio-economic concerns. Researchers from diverse areas are beginning to tackle ethical questions about creating robotic technology and implementing it in societies, in a way that will still ensure the safety of the human race.

Oussama Khatib American Roboticist

Oussama Khatib is a roboticist and a professor of computer science at Stanford University, and a Fellow of the IEEE. He is credited with seminal work in areas ranging from robot motion planning and control, human-friendly robot design, to haptic interaction and human motion synthesis. These dynamic models are used to derive optimal controllers for complex robots that interact with the environment in real-time.

Cloud robotics is a field of robotics that attempts to invoke cloud technologies such as cloud computing, cloud storage, and other Internet technologies centred on the benefits of converged infrastructure and shared services for robotics. When connected to the cloud, robots can benefit from the powerful computation, storage, and communication resources of modern data center in the cloud, which can process and share information from various robots or agent. Humans can also delegate tasks to robots remotely through networks. Cloud computing technologies enable robot systems to be endowed with powerful capability whilst reducing costs through cloud technologies. Thus, it is possible to build lightweight, low cost, smarter robots have intelligent "brain" in the cloud. The "brain" consists of data center, knowledge base, task planners, deep learning, information processing, environment models, communication support, etc.
