European Athletics Championships appearances (overview)

Italy will be represented at the 2012 European Athletics Championships held in Helsinki by the athletes that have achieved the standard of participation fixed by FIDAL. [1]

Team

Are qualified the athletes who have achieved the standard set by the Italian Federation of Athletics (maximum three athletes for event). [1] [2] [3] The events of race walking and marathon will be not disputed at Helsinki, because the races is too close to the 2012 Summer Olympics of London. [4]

On June 18, after a few defections to injury, the federal technicians (particularly the manager Francesco Uguagliati of the national team) informed the final list of 61 participants (33 men and 28 women). [5]

The country's participation at London marked its eighth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The delegation included seven competitors which included three track and field athletes; Robert Kajuga, Jean Pierre Mvuyekure and Claudette Mukasakindi. The other people that represented the country were cross-country cyclist Adrien Niyonshuti, judoka Fred Yannick Uwase, swimmers Jackson Niyomugabo and Alphonsine Agahozo. The track and field athletes qualified for the Games by meeting qualification standards while the remaining four made the Olympics through wildcard places. Niyonshuti was the flag bearer for both the opening and closing ceremonies. No athletes were able to achieve medals at the London Olympic Games.

The delegation included two track and field athletes, Jidou El Moctar and Aicha Fall, who were selected to the team by wildcard places, as the nation had no athletes that met either the "A" or "B" qualifying standards. Moctar was selected as flag bearer for the opening ceremony while a LOCOG Games Maker carried it for the closing ceremony. Neither of the two athletes progressed beyond the heats.

The country's participation at London marked its tenth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The delegation included three track and field athletes; Tsepo Ramonene, Mosito Lehata and Mamorallo Tjoka, and one swimmer; Masempe Theko. Ramonene and Lehata qualified for the Games by meeting qualification standards, while Tjoka and Theko made the Olympics through wildcard places. Tjoka was selected as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony while Lehata held it at the closing ceremony. Ramonene finished last in the men's marathon and was revived my medical personnel during the event. Lehata did not progress to the semi-finals of the men's 200 metres and Tjoka finished in 90th in the women's marathon. Theko finished 73rd overall in the women's 50 metre freestyle and did not progress to the semi-finals of the event.

The Italy national relays team at the international athletics championships refer to the results of the Italian athletics team, in the races of 4 x 100 metres relay and 4 x 400 metres relay at the International athletics competitions such as Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, Summer Universiade, Mediterranean Games, World Military Games and European Team Championships.

Italy will compete at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics from 10 to 18 August in Moscow, Russia. On 23 July 2013 the President of the FIDAL Alfio Giomi, announced during the event which took place in Augosto Azzurro in the main hall of CONI, which are 59 Italian athletes who will participate in the world championships in Moscow.

The 1988 United States Olympic Trials for track and field were held at IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the only time this venue has been used for the Olympic Trials. With the 2013 installation of Field Turf, it is unlikely to host the event again. Organised by The Athletics Congress (TAC), the nine-day competition lasted from July 15–23. The national championships in track and field for the United States was a separate event that year, held a week earlier in Tampa, Florida, the last time the Olympic Trials were not also the National Championships. The Women's Marathon Olympic Trials were held on May 1 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Men's Marathon Trials were in Jersey City, New Jersey on April 24. That same day, the 50K Racewalk trials were held adjacent to the stadium.
