William J. Murphy, also known as Joseph Murphy, was an Indian middle-distance runner. [2] He competed in the men's 800 metres at the 1928 Summer Olympics. [3]

Murphy was a member of the Anglo-Indian Sports Club based in Chennai, India. In 1927, Murphy set his 880 yards personal best of 2:02.1 minutes. [2] [4]

Murphy finished 7th in the seventh 800 m quarter-final at the 1928 Olympics and did not advance. [5]
