Characteristics, owners and captains

J.W. Clise was a fore-and-aft rigged schooner. [4] The schooner had a deadweight tonnage of 1400 tons, was 845 gross register tonnage and net 765 tons. [1] [3] [4] Its measures was 185,6 - 41,0 - 14,0 feet. [4]

In the period 1904-1917 the schooner had at least for a period American owner. [11] In 1917 it was bought by the Norwegian company «A/S Porsgrunds Motor & Seil» [12] owned by H. Chr. Hansen and Valdemar Holm. [1] [3] [4] The schooner was sold to Honolulu USA in 1923. [1] [4]

The schooner was later in the 1920s bought by Putnam Lumber Company in Shamrock (Florida) who sold it in 1939. [7] [8] The sources does not say who bought the schooner in 1939, when it foundered it was of Tampa, Florida, USA. [9]

In 1917 it was bought for US$ 55 000 ( kr 223 957,77) and was insured for NOK 275 000. [3] I 1917 it earned net NOK 47 678,15. [3]

In 1909 E. N. Smith was captain. [13] From 1917 and until 1919 J.W. Clise was captained by H.A. Larsen and from then on and until 1923 it was captained by J. Mela. [1] [4] Richard Copsey was captain while it sailed for the Putnam Company. [7] [8]

History

The history of J. W. Clise is not complete, but bits and pieces exists with different sources.

1904 - 1917

J. W. Clise was built in 1904 in Ballard, Washington state, United States at the shipyard Globe Navigation Co. [4] [5]

In January 1909 she sailed from San Francisco to Cape Flattery in 3 days which the owners regarded as remarkable. [13] Captain at the time was E. N. Smith. [13] In 1911 or 1912 she was owned by a US company when a captain Noonan was passenger from Port Townsend to Chile. [11] The schooner came from Mukilteo on the Pacific coast and arrived at Otago, New Zealand with lumber in September 1916. [14]

1917 - 1923

J. W. Clise had in 1917 sailed from Willapa Harbor (Washington state in the United States) to Sydney (New South Wales in Australia), to Newcastle, New South Wales, to Antofagasta (Chile), Honolulu and to Greys Harbor south of Puget Sound (Washington state, on the West coast of United States). [3] She used 17 days from Honolulu to Greys Harbor and the owners considered this somewhat of a record. [3] She had sailed with lumber, coal and saltpeter. [3]

1923 - 1940

The schooner was sold to Honolulu in USA in 1923. [4] She was in the 1920s bought by the Putnam Lumber Company in Florida and they owned it until 1939. [7] [8] The boats home harbour was then Jacksonville. [7] [8]

The schooner came to St. Petersburg, Florida with lumber in February 1926. [15] What other destinations it sailed to the sources does not tell.

1940 - the end

During the most serious hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico in August 1940 (the 1940 Louisiana hurricane) J. W. Clise began to take in water several miles south of Mobile and the crew had to abandon ship. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] The crew was later saved. [10] US Coast Guart searched for the schooner. [9] She was towed to Mobile by US Coast Guard and was later sunk or abandoned. [7] [8]

The wreck is at a depth between 2637 and 2762 meters. [6]

Archives

The schooners logs for the period 11 March 1908 to 13 August 1910 is with the National Archives in Seattle, Washington, United States. [16] Two pictures of the boat exists with the State Archives of Florida. [7] [8] The ships papers with U.S. Coast Guard was archived in 1948. [17]

SS <i>Eurana</i> American steam cargo ship, active 1916-1942

Eurana was a steam cargo ship built on speculation in 1915 by Union Iron Works of San Francisco. While under construction, the ship was acquired by Frank Duncan McPherson Strachan to operate in the Atlantic trade for his family's Strachan Shipping Company. The vessel made several trips between the Southeast of the United States and Europe before being sold to the Nafra Steamship Company in 1917. The freighter then entered the Mediterranean trade where she remained until September 1918 when she was requisitioned by the Emergency Fleet Corporation and transferred to the United States Navy to transport military supplies prior to the end of World War I, and as a troop transport after the war's end. In October 1919, the ship was returned to Nafra, which was then being reorganized to become the Green Star Steamship Company. In 1923, Eurana and twelve other ships passed to the Planet Steamship Company, newly formed to receive them from Green Star's bankruptcy. The ship remained principally engaged in the West Coast to East Coast trade for the next seven years. In 1930, together with several other vessels, Eurana was purchased by the Calmar Steamship Corporation, and renamed Alamar. The ship continued carrying various cargo between the East and West Coasts of the United States through 1941. On 27 May 1942, while en route from Hvalfjord to Murmansk carrying lend-lease war materiel to the Soviet Union during World War II as part of Arctic convoy PQ-16, she was fatally damaged by German aircraft bombs and was consequently scuttled by a British submarine to prevent her from becoming a menace to navigation.

The West Coast lumber trade was a maritime trade route on the West Coast of the United States. It carried lumber from the coasts of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington mainly to the port of San Francisco. The trade included direct foreign shipment from ports of the Pacific Northwest and might include another product characteristic of the region, salmon, as in the schooner Henry Wilson sailing from Washington state for Australia with "around 500,000 feet of lumber and canned salmon" in 1918.

<i>Western Union</i> (schooner)

The 1910 Cuba hurricane, popularly known as the Cyclone of the Five Days, was an unusual and destructive tropical cyclone that struck Cuba and the United States in October 1910. It formed in the southern Caribbean on October 9 and strengthened as it moved northwestward, becoming a hurricane on October 12. After crossing the western tip of Cuba, it peaked in intensity on October 16, corresponding to Category 4 on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale. That same day, the hurricane moved in a counterclockwise loop and hit Cuba again. It then tracked toward Florida, landing near Cape Romano. After moving through the state, it hugged the coast of the Southeastern United States on its way out to sea.

USS Van Buren was a schooner that served as part of the United States Revenue Cutter Service. The ship was named after Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the U.S. The ship was commissioned and set sail on 2 December 1839, and served a regular tour of duty with the Revenue Service. During the Second Seminole War, the ship was transferred to the United States Navy, and served as a support ship to troops along the coasts of Florida's rivers.

Matthew Turner was an American sea captain, shipbuilder and designer. He constructed 228 vessels, of which 154 were built in the Matthew Turner shipyard in Benicia. He built more sailing vessels than any other single shipbuilder in America, and can be considered "the 'grandaddy' of big time wooden shipbuilding on the Pacific Coast."

<i>Malahat</i> (schooner) Schooner from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, known for run-rumming during prohibition

Malahat, a large 5-masted lumber schooner from Vancouver, BC, was known as "the Queen of Rum Row" in her day. She became famous for rum-running on the US Pacific Coast between 1920 and 1933. The Vancouver Maritime Museum says that Malahat delivered "more contraband liquor than any other ship."

<i>Regina Maris</i> (1908)

The sailing ship Regina Maris was originally built as the three-masted topsail schooner Regina in 1908. She was a 144-foot (44-meter), wooden, completely fore-and-aft–rigged sailing ship with three masts. She was re-rigged in 1963 as a 148-foot (45-meter) barquentine. Regina Maris could reach a speed of up to 12 knots, especially on a half-wind course or with a fresh back-stay breeze.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1899 Carrabelle hurricane</span> Category 2 Atlantic hurricane in 1899

The 1899 Carrabelle hurricane caused significant damage in the Dominican Republic and the Florida Panhandle. The second tropical cyclone and second hurricane of the 1899 Atlantic hurricane season, the storm was first observed south of the Dominican Republic on July 28, 1899. Shortly thereafter, it made landfall in Azua Province, Dominican Republic with an intensity equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. Early on July 29, the system weakened to a tropical storm, shortly before emerging into the Atlantic Ocean. It then moved west-northwestward and remained at the same intensity for the next 24 hours. The storm made landfall near Islamorada, Florida on July 30. It then brushed Southwest Florida before emerging into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm began to re-intensify on July 31 and became a hurricane later that day. Early on August 1, it peaked with winds of 100 mph (155 km/h), several hours before making landfall near Apalachicola, Florida at the same intensity. The storm quickly weakened inland and dissipated over Alabama on August 2.

SS <i>El Faro</i> Rollon-rolloff container ship

SS El Faro was a United States-flagged, combination roll-on/roll-off and lift-on/lift-off cargo ship crewed by U.S. merchant mariners. Built in 1975 by Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. as Puerto Rico, the vessel was renamed Northern Lights in 1991 and, finally, El Faro in 2006. She was lost at sea with her entire crew of 33 on October 1, 2015, after steaming into the eyewall of Hurricane Joaquin.

<i>Minnie A. Caine</i>

The Minnie A. Caine was a four-masted wooden schooner built by Seattle shipbuilding the Moran Brothers in 1900. One of the schooner's initial short-term co-owners, Elmer Caine, named her after his wife, Minnie. From 1900 to 1926, the schooner was operated out of San Francisco by Charles Nelson Co., one of the largest transporters of lumber in the United States at the time. The schooner transported lumber across the Pacific Ocean from the Pacific Northwest to ports in Australia and Americas, but after 1920, her scope of operations became limited to the West Coast lumber trade. By 1926, the company could no longer run a sailing ship profitably, and the Minnie A. Caine was moored in a marine boneyard in California.

<i>Lyman D. Foster</i> Cargo vessel

The Lyman D. Foster was an ocean-going, cargo-carrying, wooden sailing vessel named after the son of a provisions merchant who invested in vessels. Built at the Hall Brother's shipyard at Port Blakely, Washington (state), U.S.A. in 1892, she was 184 feet long with a 39-feet beam and 15.4 feet depth, and had a tonnage of 778 GRT.

SS <i>Chippewa</i> (1905) Former American cargo ship (1905–1928)

Chippewa was a steam cargo ship built in 1905 by William Cramp & Sons of Philadelphia for Clyde Steamship Company with intention of operating on their East Coast and West Indies routes.

SS Alice McGuigin was a two-masted schooner that sank in Lake Borgne off Pearlington, Mississippi, United States in the 1893 Cheniere Caminada hurricane. Under the command of Captain Wm. Delavier with five crewmembers, the schooner was owned by the Poitevent & Favre Lumber Company before lost at sea on October 2, 1893.

SS Florinda was a 57-foot (17 m) double-masted schooner constructed on the Tangipahoa River to the north of New Orleans in 1845 and engaged in the lake trade on the Northern Gulf Coast. Under the command of owner Harmon Jones and Captain James Kenmure, she sailed on July 6, 1849, from New Orleans for the California Gold Rush and was feared lost at sea with all hands while sailing around Cape Horn. Twenty-six years later, reports of the crew living as castaways on an uncharted island in the Straits of Magellan mysteriously surfaced.

USRC <i>Gresham</i> U.S. Revenue Service cutter

USRC Gresham was a cruising cutter and auxiliary gunboat built for the United States Revenue Cutter Service to patrol the Great Lakes. She was one of a series of cutters named for former U.S. Secretaries of the Treasury. Her namesake Walter Q. Gresham served as the 35th Secretary of the Treasury in 1884 and died in 1895 while serving as the 33rd U.S. Secretary of State. She became part of the newly created United States Coast Guard in 1915, and also served as a coastal convoy escort and patrol boat under United States Navy control during both World War I and World War II. After being decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1944, she eventually came under Israeli control in 1947. She carried Jewish refugees from Italy to Palestine and later served in the fledgling Israeli Navy until 1951.
