He is a former Manager of the Pirates' Double-A affiliate, the Altoona Curve. In 2018, he became manager of the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League.
John William Valentin is a former shortstop and third baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Boston Red Sox from 1992 to 2001, and spent a final season with the New York Mets in 2002. He later became a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and Boston Red Sox, from 1999 through 2012. He then served as a coach for the Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, from 2014 through 2018 and managed the Texas Rangers from 2019 to 2022. He is currently a special assistant and roving instructor for the Dodgers.

He played in Major League Baseball as a shortstop from 1978 to 1982 for the Texas Rangers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He returned to the major leagues in 1987 with the Montreal Expos. After his playing career he continued to serve in minor league baseball as a coach and manager for several professional baseball organizations.

During the 1989 season, the Pirates traded Merchant to the Seattle Mariners as a part of a five-player deal.
